Nice day today, not as many people as most years, and that was ok with me, long as the girls come home I'm a happy camper. No boyfriends to torment this year. A few are staying around for the weekend and have built a big fire outside and are dug in telling stories and catching up. They'll probably be out there till tomorrow's breakfast ride up the mountain. The menu:

a small 25 pound turkey with blue corn and green chile stuffing.

elk tamales, beans and posole

a marinated and spit roasted 1/2 of a small White Tailed Deer I took a couple of weeks ago.

various extraneous vegetable dishes.

3 buck chuck Shiraz, Chateau St. Michelle Riesling, Guinness, Negra Modelo, Bud Light. Carlos I Brandy for desert with the seegars.

Now I'm hiding in the barn with the dairy goats because I'm all done talking to people for the night. These goats make a lot more sense to me than most of my relatives.

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

For us it came and went last month already.

Glad you all had a good time. I love the left-overs and now I'm really looking forward to more turkey next month.

Prof: How about sharing your blue corn and green chile stuffing recipe?? Sounds delish.

It isn't really a recipe. Basically the same as any cornbread stuffing, except you make the cornbread with blue cornmeal. The seasonings are not the usual sage but rather oregano, comino and garlic. The chiles are fire roasted and diced first. The onion and celery's still in there of course.

You mean I log in here just to find out what new torture and torment angles you found for the boyfriend this year and she doesn't even bring you one? Does this daughter of yours not know that the holiday season does not get started until we get to hear about the fate of the unknowing lambs she brings home to Papa Profs Thanksgiving Slaughter?

I'm sorry fenix, really I am! It's not just the older one now I'm afraid, the younger daughter had her Quinceañera (fifteenth birthday coming out ceremony) this summer and now SHE'S elegible to date too. My hair is turning whiter by the day. While my little birds tip me off about two current paramors, I think both girls decided to spare their novios the anguish and their papi the fun and left the boyfriends in Tucson and Phoenix. Neither one would admit to me that she was dating, or even knew the opposite sex existed! We roped and rode and wrestled and milked cows and goats and danced just like they were my one and only babies and I was still the only man in their lives. God bless them!

And don't be such a stranger around here!

Hi fenix, it's been a pretty busy year. SWMBO has become a partner in a gallery quite a ways from the ranch and so it keeps her away a lot. They're up and running now and so she'll gradually be able to spend more time at home in her studio. (and lookin' after her menfolk). SWNLNBO is also a silent partner as she lives even further away in Phoenix, so the two of them are still thick as thieves over their new business venture. Now all they've gotta do is sell some of that stuff and start making some money or I'll be bailing them out for the rent some day. Middle daughter is with her and doing very well in school and riding competitively like her big sis did all thru school. She ropes better than she rides and I wish she'd enter competition roping as it pays a lot better than the foo foo English jumping she likes to do, but she's not very interested. I shed many tears and wore out a lot of gloves before I could even rope a fence post much less a moving steer and it really gets me to see somebody who's so good at it act like it's no big deal, but she takes after her mother and is pretty stubborn. I learned a long time ago how to pick my battles. Older daughter is doing graduate level Ag Management stuff at University and has become a professional cattle, sheep and dairy goat judge in her spare (??) time. I am apparently cursed with workaholic females. Son is graduating 8th grade and is making noises about going to the Instituto Monterrey in Mexico for high school. We're still thinking about it but he's begun the application process. His mom doesn't want him to go, and I'll have to hire somebody to replace him around here, but if he gets in it'd be a great opportunity for him. I'm still buying too many horses and not selling nearly enough of them, and sitting on the porch with my Guinness and cigars taking pot shots at the coyotes that come to snack on my lambs.
We'll be having the usual crowd here for Christmas, and I hear the Novios will be in attendance. Both city boys, although one does know how to ride well. I'm thinking there will be some sort of initiation this year involving entrails of large beasts or perhaps lessons in the harvest and preparation of Criadillas (bull testicles) or Tripas de Leche (milk glands). There's also some dehorning that still needs to be done...hmmmm......I'll keep you posted.

prof: I love hearing about your family! Not sure what the acronyms mean though. . . .

It's great that you have accomplished women in your family, and that is a real reflection on how you treat them. Obviously, they get respect and encouragement from you.

Could I ask a question that you don't have to answer? I get the impression that you are of Spanish heritage but haven't seen you mention that here. Does your son speak Spanish? School away from home sounds good for a kid.

I'm of Spanish descent roadsmith. My ancestors came to New Spain in the 1600's and we've been on this ranch and ranches in Mexico since the 1700's. All my kids are bilingual.
SWMBO is She Who Must Be Obeyed, my second wife and the mother of my son. SWNLNBO is She Who No Longer Need Be Obeyed, my first wife and the mother of my girls, as well as being my wife's best friend and a sort of second mom to my son. Basically, all my kids have two moms. My boy and I are outnumbered in all things. It's four to two no matter how you cut it.

Interesting! And are you called "profe" because you teach? Or did teach? (I promise this is my last question.)

"profe" is a nickname for anyone who is a teacher in Mexico and most Spanish speaking countries. Without getting too involved, educators in most Spanish and Portugese speaking countries are treated with a deference and formality that's really hard to breach. It'd be nice to get a bit more respect in the U.S. sometimes, but Latino countries take it to extremes of politeness, at least for my taste.People you've know for years will still speak to you using the formal form of the language and never call you by your first name if you're a teacher. "Profe", short for Profesor (professor, or teacher) has become an informal address that shows affection while still maintaining the respect for educators that the culture requires. It's an honor to be called profe. It means your students and their families care for you as a person.

LOLOLOLOL GAK CHOKE HAK COUGH...Your decision to ride English was very much a decision Mingo, you could have chosen/decided to do differently/otherwise if you weren't such a dem/socialist/progressive/liberal I'm sure you'd see/realize/understand that. MOST here I'm sure except for the supporters of Saddam ride WESTERN and understand that riding English is an abberation/perversion/liberal pastime and nothing more. Your boots don't even have HEELS for God sake!!

Here's little sis a couple of years ago.

Aren't those of the younger generation brazen in their openess about English riding? No shame whatsoever! Just goes to show the corrupt Dem/liberal influence that's ruining this country!

Uhhh.....one doesn't need heels if one can ride properly

PS. I truly envy your daughter....what fun she'll have! I still miss it all......

why'ntcha come out for Christmas? We have a big Christmas day ride to the top of the hill behind the ranch house at sunrise. We build a big fire and toast the aniversary of the arrival of the son of man with Spanish brandy and champagne. Then we go back to the ranch and start killing things to eat. I just found out there is a French couple gonna be here. All the way from Gay Paree. It could be that the boyfriends will get off easy this year if I have actual FOREIGNERS to goof on.

We have a don't ask don't tell policy on riding. Nobody would say a thing to you about riding English. My daughter would even have somebody to bond with in another one of those silly little saddles. Those of us who do not ride Eeenglish will confine our prejudices to knowing looks one to the other and maybe a few polite snickers. Nothin' more I promise.

(you know I'm kiddin' right? She didn't learn to ride from some English fop, now did she?)

Sounds like my kinda fun! Throw in some horses and it's perfect!

Yup, I know you're kidding....inside every Western rider is an English rider dying to wear those high black leather boots and tight pants.....c'mon, profe, get in touch with your English side.......
