New changes....but will it really do much good since so many passports have been made by fraudulent sources???
I don't know...but maybe it will help some.

Passport set to be key to U.S. entry hemispherewide
(Washington Times) (11/23) -
All citizens of the United States, Canada, Mexico and Bermuda will be required to present a passport to enter America when arriving by air from any part of the Western Hemisphere beginning Jan. 23, the Homeland Security and State departments announced yesterday.

Fraud is only a small part. Drive Across entries were originally part of this proposal, but that part has been postponed until 2008.
A separate proposed rule addressing land and sea travel is expected to go into effect in January 2008, when U.S. citizens traveling between this country and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean and Bermuda by land or sea will be required to present a valid U.S. passport or other documents approved by Homeland Security.
For now, it may help the airports, that's all.

LOLinda, the Washington Times has no credibility with most of us here. What an extreme right-wing rag. Try quoting a reputable newspaper for a change.

Grasping at straws should be the title of that tale.
The Washington TIMES is part of the right wing propaganda machine along with Fox and the New York Post... The press in general has become an extension of the Republican party.

And yet, the Times has it correct. You moron liberal should quit reading the NY times and Washington post, CNN, ABC, CBS. Talk about bird cage liners.
It's been no secret about the passports. In fact, it is actually old news. Here in Minnesota, there has been a lot of grumbling being a major entry point for Canada. We used to be able to go back and forth as we pleased. That won't be the case after the first of the year.

You won't need a passport to drive to Canada until at least January 2008.

profe - How can you say that 'for sure'?
The dems have said they're going to change our HomeLandSecurity bill all around....this may just be part of what they decide to try and change.
They've also said they're going to 'revisit' the new border fence between the US and mexico, that just recently passed.
You think they're going to fund that now? lol I don't.
[edited to change 'review' to the word they used which was 'revisit'.]

Here's how I can say it for sure Linda, and this doesn't have anything to do with the border fence, it has to do with Americans re-entering the U.S. after visits to Canada and Mexico, in the case of driving. While passports will be required of air travelers in 2007, citizen drivers crossing into the U.S. from Canada or Mexico will not need passports until January of 2008 at the earliest. You can speculate all you want about what might or might not happen, but that's the rule as of now. Look it up on the State Department website if you don't believe me. I'm not interested in making this a political argument. It's not. It's the law.

Here, to avoid any silliness, I looked it up for you. I cross the border all the time Linda, I know what will be required of me this January, when I'll be hauling a load of cattle across the border to Mexico and bringing back a load of horses. What will be required? NOTHING THAT ISN'T REQUIRED NOW, PLAIN AND SIMPLE.
Beginning January 23, 2007, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document. As early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. While recent legislative changes permit a later deadline, the Departments of State and Homeland Security are working to meet all requirements as soon as possible. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries.

I'll avoid bolding any of it for your ease of reading, assured that you can read ALL the words.

We also cross the border and Profe51 is correct about the passport legislation. When Bush signed the bill to build the southern fence they knew they couldn't afford to pay for it and it was done before the election to show they were trying to do something about the illegal immigration.
The Republican congressman in Georgia who is calling for a similar fence between Canada and the US has no idea of the length of it and the enormous cost of cutting through forests and waterways and then manning it with round-the-clock armed guards. We've hiked in lots of areas on the border and we've driven in with a 4X4 and there are only little markers here and there to show where the border is so it's difficult at times to tell which country you're in. You could wander for days without seeing another person or a dwelling. It would be a huge cost to run a fence there........... perhaps they can do land mines though, that may keep the pesky Canadians out.

profe - While I appreciate you taking the time to post how it's done NOW...lol....that wasn't MY point.
It was what the DEMS are going to change about these laws once they are in power.
As I said....IF they were happy with the 'fence' then they wouldn't say they're going back to 'REVISIT' the bill that passed - they'd just get it funded. lol
They would ONLY do that if they were planning to CHANGE it. And I personally believe they WILL. They didn't want it in the first place.

See....kiara thinks we're trying to keep out canadians....lol.lol shows what she knows....[little]..NO ONE is trying to keep canadians out....it's the TERRORISTS that come in via our northern border they're working to prevent coming in.
THAT was a MAJOR issue between the US and canada immediately following 9-11....BECAUSE of canada's VERY LAX immigration policies. THAT was the concern for the US.

It was a joke! Sheesh, you have absolutely no sense of humor at all, do you?? Truthfully, I think you'd be happy to blow away a few Canucks each day with land mines. It would keep you for days.

See....there's a GREAT example of how kiara's mind works....twists what is said....and how she comes up with all her little 'lies' she then spreads.
Of course I'd never want to see that done....but IF kaira says it....she then starts believing it. Then I get accused of those being MY feelings...rather than her own distorted views.

And I can just see the Minnesota/Canadian border....picture the remote woods and frozen lakes....snomobilers from both countries laughing hysterically as they flash their passports at each other as they zig-zag merrily back and forth across the border
