18 Llamas to Appear in Rose Parade

Updated 7:46 AM ET December 12, 2006

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) - Llamas have waited 15 years to appear in the Rose Parade. On New Year's Day, 18 of the animals and their owners will stroll down Colorado Boulevard.

Joan Selby, a member of the Llama Association of Southern California, sent the original application to the parade committee 15 years ago.

She is not sure why it took so long for parade officials to let the llamas into the parade but suggested it might have been fear of the unknown.

"It could be that it just was not our time. Back then, llamas weren't very well known," Selby said.

Paul Holman, president and chairman of the board of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association, said he has been told llamas had not been allowed in the parade because horses fear them and react as if the llamas were predators.

But he did his research and found a solution. The llamas will be staged in a separate area and have a spot toward the beginning of the parade, far from the equestrian units, Holman said.

aaww crow just busting your chops. To be frank I never watch parades, they bore the hell out of me.
No I wont turn into Linda. She likes to talk about politics, which is okay, she enjoys it.
I rarely post about politics or religion-they also bore me.Thats why me and my wife have gotten along for 35 years.Shes religious,I am not-shes a Democrat,Im a Republican. We are not going to change each others minds,so why get in an argument over it? Although there is one politican that makes "classics" skin crawl-Hillary Clinton-I just cant stand that woman. So come election day,and since I already voted in the morning,I took my wife over to vote when she came home from work.Im standing in line waiting for her to vote.As soon as she walked in the voting booth and closed the curtins,I said in a loud voice "Linda,if you push that Hillary lever down, you're walking home" The place broke out in laughter-not that I want to influence someones voting
I wish Cheryl was there to "protect the vote" she would have had a sh*t fit.

Your best post all year Classic!! I really did LOL!

Horses are afraid of almost any animal they haven't been around before, this is a common defense among herd animals. We tend to forget that horses are herd animals, but they are. I have fence posts with more brains than some of my horses. LLamas have a body posture, particularly the way they carry their heads, that bespeaks agression to a horse. A chance meeting like a parade, where the animals' nerves are already on edge, is a good place for an ugly incident. They're right to separate them. It will be neat to see them in the parade though. Wonder how it will go when a few of them become recalcitrant and decide they'd rather not walk? Ever seen a llama that has decided it doesn't want to do what it's handler wants it to? They're way more stubborn than mules and burros. Don't forget, they're just smaller camels.

Imo, cheryl wouldn't have found it the LEAST bit funny....[although it was, very funny ].

I have no doubt she would have REPORTED it as a violation....and had action taken against you. She's VERY serious about what 'good' she THINKS she's doing.

Ok, classic, it was funny (she grudgingly admits).
I also have to agree with you on parades...the only ones I like are where they throw candy and I can shove the little kids aside and scoop up handfuls

I also have to say your comment about Cheryl was light-hearted and funny....I doubt if she would take offense since she's very bright and has a great sense of humor...one of the nicest posters !!!Wish she would come back!

Profe, I had a horse that would've eaten llamas for breakfast...they're not all wienies!

The irony of all this was I actually voted for the Democratic candidate Eliot Spitzer for the governor of N.Y. I didnt tell my wife this as I would never hear the end of it.

Linda...uh hah I know what you're thinking-God will get even with me for voting for a Democrat and send me straight to hell,do not pass go and do not collect $200.00....and you're probably right

I don't think that at all, classic.

In the past I too have voted for dems/Indep. I DO vote for what the candidate stands for - if I agree with their positions that are important to me.

So no 'wet noodle' spanking this time.

classic, I don't know if some horses qualify as mentally disabled but some are definitely smarter than others.
However, with a horse, so much depends on bloodlines, which breed it is, temperament, how it was raised and trained from birth, it's subsequent experiences ...
all these shape a horse and since they can't speak it's hard to determine what is mental and what is environmental.
Usually any bad or unusual behavior on the part of a horse is due to maltreatment by humans.

I guess it's only by comparison classic. I have a couple of horses that if they were people would have to be institutionalized somewhere for the profoundly stupid. Then again, we tend to equate "intelligence" in domestic animals with "eagerness to please humans", which I don't necessarily think is a mark of smarts at all.

crow/profe-the reason I was asking was, at one time I did some riding myself.I'll be the first one to admit that I dont know jack-sh*t about horses, except I heard they were stupid. That being said,I did some riding in the summer of 1971 in Wyoming and Montana. The first ride I took was near the Grand Tetons,in Wyoming. It was an all day trip to the base of the mountains where we had lunch.I really had a good time even thou I was quite inexperienced.
I took the pic below of the Tetons the day before I went riding. The quality of the pic isnt great as at the time I had one of those sh*tty instamatic cameras..

The next day Im heading up toward Montana and I stopped to take this pic, which I like because of the snow covered mountains in the background-this was in August mind you. This was taken between Missoula, and Kalispel,Montana.

The ride in Montana wasnt so much fun. We went riding near the top of one mountain as the picture below indicates.I took this pic again because you can see the top of the mountain in the background with some snow on it.

We are on are way back and evidently my horse got stung by a bee and the horse went ape-sh*t.It reared up,and I panicked and tried to get off.I got my left foot stuck in the left stirup. The horse takes off, dragging me on my back for over a hundred feet before the head guy stops the horse.I refused to get back on the horse as I was pretty shaken up.
He told me it was over 5 miles back to the base camp,so I got on his horse and he took mine. After I got back I found out why I was the last one in line of 15.The guy told me that the horse has to be last in line or he will start kicking any horse behind him.He said the horse was "partly retarded" That kind of pissed me off because I told him I was inexpierenced-I dont know why they would put me on a horse like that.Below is me and "Thunder" near the top of the mountain where we had lunch-this was taken about an hour before I was dragged.

crow-dont be making fun of my haberdashery like you did the last time I posted a pic here..

Actually my hind end bothered more then anything

However when I got back to N.Y. in late Sept,I did take a couple of riding lessons in an indoor rink-English style. The main difference I found out there was no "horn" on the saddle to hold on to.So here I am riding around the rink coming up to the first fence and wondering if this dumb bastard is going to jump over,or stop short and send me flying on my ass.Well he jumped over and I must admit it was quite fun. However after I was done,my legs and thighs were damn sore for a couple of days.

YES, your legs hurt because you were USING them! Not just sitting there. Riding is fun but lessons are a work out!

I can hardly wait to tell profe YOU not only rode but rode ENGLISH !! You may never hear the end of it

I didn't wait long enough before for your last photo to download...Thunder looks like a nice gentle horse...you shouldn't have scared him with being dragged like that!!!I hope he wasn't hurt!

Speaking of my haberdashery-when I was in Jackson Hole,I dressed up one night to do the town and check out da chicks.Evidently,it was the wrong town.I wore black shoes, black pants and a yellow short sleeve shirt.
I walk in the first bar in downtown Jackson and almost everyone down to a T was wearing blue jeans, western shirts and cowboy hats.I thought to myself WTF? dont these people dress up when they go out? Did I feel out of place?? yea like Charleton Heston did when he landed on the planet of the apes.

Take it as a compliment and strut around some more in those tight little pants. You've worn them as a sailor and for riding a horse. Now what else? Tell us more.

Kira-Logan is fun when he wants to be.He can also be nasty.Hes never been really nasty to me,as he has with another poster in here-we just break each others balls.I dont approve of gays lifestyles,to me me its a real turn off and weird.
As far as gay marriages go,I could give a sh*t less.If they are allowed get married, fine,if not,its not my problem-its just not an issue with me.
