TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -
Under pressure from New Jersey's highest court to offer marriage or its equivalent to gay couples, the Legislature voted Thursday to make New Jersey the third state to allow civil unions.
Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine said he would sign the measure, which would extend to same-sex couples all the rights and privileges available under state law to married people. The bill passed the Assembly 56-19 and the Senate 23-12.
"Love counts," Democratic Assemblyman Wilfredo Caraballo, a chief sponsor of the bill, said as the debate opened. "The gender of whom one loves should not matter to the state."
But Republican Assemblyman Ronald S. Dancer said: "It's my personal belief, faith and religious practice that marriage has been defined in the Bible. And this is one time that I cannot compromise my personal beliefs and faiths."

Massachusetts is the only state to allow gay marriage. Vermont and Connecticut have civil unions, and California has domestic partnerships that work similarly.
Among the benefits gay couples would get under New Jersey's civil unions bill are adoption rights, hospital visitation rights and inheritance rights.
Gay rights advocates welcomed the legislation as a step forward but said they would continue to push for the right to marry.
The bill was drafted in response to a landmark New Jersey Supreme Court ruling in October that required the state to extend the rights and benefits of marriage to gay couples within 180 days.
The court, in its 4-3 ruling, left it up to the Legislature to decide whether to call such unions "marriages" or something else.
Gay rights groups have argued that not calling such unions "marriage" creates a different, and inferior, institution.
Steven Goldstein, director of the gay rights advocacy organization Garden State Equality, said he expects gay couples to be able to get married in New Jersey within two years.

I'm all for equal rights for gays, just not marriage.

Besides, Doc, I don't think it's constitutional AT ALL for a judge to order ONLY two choices of how the issue will be dealt with.
I like it as it's been done in ALL the states...except Mass...where it's put before the voters to decide.
NOT have the decision made by one judge....or ANY state legislature.

What's "wrong" with it is that basically the rest of the world has to subsidize was is essentially an illness, with tax dollars to provide "spousal" benefits.

There is so much anger and hostility around here, maybe it's time to just shut the round table down.
This isn't a place where anyone wants to come and have a discussion or share an opinion, it's just a place where you guys put on your tuff guy leather jackets and beat the cr*p out of each other like a bunch of high school dirtbags.

I believe that's the intention of some, to have just that done...the board shut down.
They go from board to board pulling this crap. It's entertainment to them. They don't come here to have civil conversations with anyone.

it's unfortunate, Linda.
I'd really enjoy having a conversation with you about this topic, whether we agree or not. Heck, there LOTS of posters I'd like to talk to BUT...
If I bothered to post, would we get to talk or would we be consistently interrupted by ridiculous rantings and posts twisting words or rehashing cr*p from years ago?
I really wish you guys would take a chill and be civil to each other.

I agree...it makes it next to impossible to have ANY discussion. One only has to look to a simple thread like the one I posted, hoping to encourage some to remember our troops.
And you can see what they did with that thread.
They did this before....and the RT was almost totally dead. A handful of posters remained here. Then when I came back...noticing they'd left...they return...to continue on with their juvenile garbage.
It surprises me to see how many supposed ADULTS behave this way. But it's not a whole lot different on most boards now-a-days, sadly.

Honestly, I have far less to offer than the majority of posters here and getting over myself isn't an issue, as others here can defend.

Zoomin, your failure to see the root cause of the problem here surprises me. You only need to look at OTWA before Linda's suspension to see a similar situation... caused by Linda and subsequently resolved by linda's removal.
