The ACLU is at it again.....this time defending ILLEGALS.
Doing all they can so that illegals can't be deported.

Civil Rights Groups Sue Over Rent Law

Two civil rights groups filed a lawsuit Tuesday challenging a new law in a Dallas suburb that outlaws renting apartments to illegal immigrants, alleging the ordinance violates federal law and forces landlords to act as immigration officers.

The American Civil Liberties Union and the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund filed the suit on behalf of residents and landlords in Farmers Branch, just north of Dallas.

It is the third lawsuit brought against the city since the ordinance passed in November.

The lawsuit claims the measure, scheduled to take effect Jan. 12, is so poorly drafted that it excludes even legal immigrants from renting.

"Immigration enforcement must be left to the federal government, not each local municipality," said Lisa Graybill, legal director of the ACLU of Texas.
"Otherwise Texas will end up with a patchwork system that is impractical and unenforceable."

Farmers Branch spokesman Tom Bryson said the city will not comment on pending litigation.

On Friday, the owners of three apartment complexes filed a lawsuit asking a federal court to declare the rent law unconstitutional.

In another lawsuit filed earlier this month, a Farmers Branch resident alleged that the mayor repeatedly violated the state's open meetings laws to deliberate the ordinances.

The new law calls for property managers or owners to verify the immigration or citizenship status of apartment renters.

The City Council also approved resolutions making English the city's official language and allowing authorities to become part of a federal program so they can enforce immigration laws.

Since 1970, Farmers Branch has changed from a small, predominantly white bedroom community with a declining population to a city of almost 28,000 people, about 37 percent of them Hispanic, according to the census.

More than 50 municipalities nationwide have considered, passed or rejected similar laws, but until now that trend hadn't been duplicated in Texas.

Imo, there is NO reason ALL who come in contact with any ILLEGAL can't report them so they can be deported.

This is just more garbage from those who WANT illegals to come here...and don't want them to be deported.

The new law calls for property managers or owners to verify the immigration or citizenship status of apartment renters.

It's not a matter of reporting them Linda, it's a matter of VERIFYING THEIR IMMIGRATION STATUS. Not a simple matter, if you have any experience with it. Joe Blow who has a 6 unit complex is now supposed to become an expert on forged documents? And what if he incorrectly verifies documents that to his inexperienced eyes look real? THEN who's at fault? HIM? Who's going to train him? Maybe we can hire the Minutemen.

This law's a joke no matter what you think of immigration. I'm glad it's being challenged. Sure, you'll say something like it's because I "support illegal immigration" or some other nonsense, but that's not the case here. This is another one of those feel good political moves that can't be enforced and in the interest of small government and fewer statutes SHOULD be challenged. If it holds up in court, great. Small time landlords all over the state will be selling out. That should do wonders for the Tejas real estate market.

profe, imo, you ALWAYS defend the actions of the ACLU....whether they're in America's best interests or not. I've never seen you disagree with anything they do. lol

There is NO reason any LEGAL immigrant can't show proof of their right to be working in America.

But liberals always find more excuses for NOT dealing with the illegal problem than Carter has pills.

Many American's have supported the same idea when it comes to employers verifying their being here legally and want to hold employers accountable for hiring illegals.

Imo, this is no different. I hope it's upheld and that this spreads from city to city.

We all know the truth of the matter is ICE doesn't have the manpower nor the funding to do it ALL themselves and that's what those who really, truly WANT illegals here hope for.

So many liberals argue that even the police shouldn't be able to detain illegals. BS is my position on that joke.

So...after they block EVERY avenue to catch the illegals....then they blame the administraton for doing nothing in dealing with the illegal problem.

REMEMBER it's the liberal hillary who said..."it takes a village". Well it takes every city and ALL manpower to deal with our illegal situation also.

Some of us can see through that liberal 'attempt' to allow illegals to remain here....and support ANY action that will change the status quo.

This would be just one of many that WOULD work.

Making small time landlords legally responsible for verifying immigration documents is wrong and won't work. It's just another feel good law.

I noticed that Farmers Branch is also fixing to pass a law that city employees must speak English. It seems they have a problem with that, there are SIX city employees out of a total of 180 who don't speak English. I'd say that speaks volumes in several languages about this community's attitudes.

If they can't speak English, how did they get through the interview?

Hmmm. Since when did the ACLU become strictly a liberal organization??? That is the same ACLU that has represented the KKK right?

Civil liberties would apply to all Americans, which is exatly why they are representing landlords, who I would guess are not all "liberals", especially in the state of Texas. I say, "good for the landlords" to find such great representation.

Just curious Linduh, but would you accept representation from the ACLU if you believed your civil liberties were being challenged?

rusty - anyone who has done their 'homework' KNOWS the aclu has changed in the past 10-15 years. They MOSTLY support anti-American ideals.

They support all that is WRONG in and with America today. They used to fight mostly for individual rights....but no longer.

Now they represent MOSTLY all the radical special interest groups and ANYONE who does the research is well aware of that FACT.

You can continue to claim otherwise....doesn't make it the truth.

And NO I would NEVER turn the to aclu to help me. I would however turn to the ACLJ http://www.aclj.org/ because that's the group I'd need to protect MY constitutional rights from attack from the aclu.

LOL!!! I didn't ask who you would turn to, I asked if you would accept representation from the ACLU, but as usual you interpret everything as you want, which is almost always wrong. Take for example your comments that the ACLU mostly supports anti-american ideals... obviously, this is another one of your neocon kool aid lies.

I used to own a rental unit. If this became law where I was, I would sell. Why risk it when there are better and more efficient ways to make money.

This would explain why major crime is up. Bush wants ordinary citizen to do the job of trained police officers, the FBI and immigration officials.

It is easier to have ordinary citizen who are not paid rat out crooks then actually pay people to look for them.
Absolute faith has been shown, consistently, to breed intolerance. And intolerance, history teaches us, again and again, begets violence.

Freedom begins when you say 'No.'
