WP: New Orleans repeats mistakes

By ones and twos, homeowners in New Orleans are reinhabiting neighborhoods, even the most devastated ones, and many view their return as a triumph over adversity. But experts believe that the helter-skelter return of residents to the low-lying metropolis may represent another potential disaster.

You'd move back too if somebody was handing you checks.

This all boils down to the extremely poor leadership from their major nagin.

BUT...they re-elected the incompetant idiot....so they deserve what they get next time.

It's like some people don't have the brains they were born with....and he HAS to be one of them.

"What we said was that, in the areas that had gotten 10 feet of water, don't commit to rebuilding anything yet, because it probably won't happen anyway," said Joseph Brown, head of the urban design panel at the Urban Land Institute."

But Nagin, who was hearing complaints that shrinking the city's footprint was unfair, particularly to African Americans, rejected the idea. Everyone should be able to return to their homes, he said. "I'm not ready to concede that neighborhoods need to be demolished," Nagin said at the time.

It may very well be unwise to rebuild these neighborhoods, but I don't understand the cavalier attitude towards these NO citizens who have gone through hell. They are finally getting some assistance from a government, which failed them miserably (at the city, state and federal levels)and you'd think they were receiving a windfall. These people lost everything---loved ones, memories, what little in the way of possessions they had. I can't even imagine the horror they went through. Do you really begrudge their trying to put their lives back together? Is it so hard to understand why they want to return to their homes, however misguided that idea may be?

We don't care if they return to their homes. We care about being the ones to pay for it.

Think of it as relatives who show up unannounced. After a month in your guest bedroom, sleeping late, etc., they take your car to go for a pedicure and wreck it. The next day, they suggest you can take the bus to work because they have to borrow the spouse's car to get the other foot done.

An unbelievable statement of compassion. Hopefully you will never find yourself in their position.

Desquirrel---You are not even embarrassed to make a statement like that! We have disasters all over this country every year. Did you feel the same after California earthquates, Florida hurricanes, tornadoes in the midwest. You don't want to pay for it? Tough sh?t! It goes with the territory of being an American---and a frigging human being.

Duhsquirrels statement didn't amaze me. He is a neocon...they don't want to pay taxes to support their country but believe THEY are the only ones who should benefit from them,, they hate anyone who isn't them, they hate America and their fellow Americans. They are happy and delighted to see the suffering of others (but would whine and cry the loudest if they stub their toe and the government doesn't pay for it).

It's weird though, they LOVE giving their taxes to oil companies,

the ultra rich,

Halliburton,

companies making huge profits who use off-shore addresses to cheat America out of their fair share of taxes,

the big companies who stole their tax dollars in no bid scams to reconstruct after Katrina....

but help out their fellow Americans who have gone through hell and REALLY need help.....nope, that's not Fasicst enough for them!

What's even MORE weird is that they call themselves "christian" ! LOL!!!!

Duhsquirrel, ""Ahh, that's touching. After spending decade and after decade and billion after billion, you dopes still haven't figured out that there will never be enough money to "help".""

And you neocon dopes will never figure out that that statement applies perfectly to bush's failed policy in Iraq...

Oh, and don't argue that it hasn't been decades and decades....because it WILL BE .

desquirrel is right however. It has been nearly a year and a half. The responsible people have either rebuilt or moved on.

The only ones left are the crybabies who feel that everyone else should give them hand outs for doing absolutely nothing. Just as they were receiving prior to Katrina. Frankly it's time for these people to quit belly aching and start being responsible for themselves and get off of their collective azzes and move on with life.

As far as sh1t for brains davebraun, the beeach helen, cowfarm, proof he's and idiot and bankrupt coins to pull their collective heads out and really see how the demomorons Nagin and Blanco failed this region.

When desquirel is forced out of his home to poverty, bad weather or any other circumstance, I bet he'd be the first in line for some government cheese and begging for a hand out.

Absolute faith has been shown, consistently, to breed intolerance. And intolerance, history teaches us, again and again, begets violence.
