Top U.S. General Calls Homosexuality 'Immoral'
As Democrats Try to Overturn Ban on Gays in the Military, Pace's Comments Sure to Provoke Debate
By JONATHAN KARL
March 13, 2007 — - The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Peter Pace, is facing some tough questions this morning about controversial comments he made about homosexuality and gays serving in the military during a newspaper interview.

Pace was asked about his view on gays in the military by the Chicago Tribune. His answer was carefully worded, but his meaning was unmistakable.

"My upbringing is such that I believe there are certain things, certain types of conduct that are immoral," Pace said during the tape-recorded interview.

"I believe that military members who sleep with other military members' wives are immoral in their conduct, in that we should not tolerate that."

"I believe that homosexual acts between individuals are immoral and that we should not condone immoral acts."

Democrats Want to Overturn 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell'

Those comments are sure to provoke a firestorm today on Capitol Hill, where Democrats have been trying to overturn the Pentagon's "don't ask, don't tell" policy on gays in the military.

Pace made it clear that he supported the policy because he believed homosexual acts were "immoral."

The "don't ask, don't tell" policy, which was instituted by President Clinton and written by then-Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Colin Powell, allows gays in the military only if they stay in the closet.

Pace says he supports the policy because it bans homosexual acts.

"I do not believe the armed forces of the U.S. are well served by saying through our policies that it is OK to be immoral in any way," Pace said.

A spokesperson for Pace told ABC News that the general had been asked to give his personal opinion, and "he provided it."

It is amazing that anyone can make this statement, never mind the head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. It is akin to saying that diabetes is immoral.

First:

"""I believe that military members who sleep with other military members' wives are immoral in their conduct, in that we should not tolerate that.""""

So this DUNCE, who either doesn't know there are military members who have HUSBANDS or doesn't believe that sleeping with someone else's HUSBAND is immoral....this DUNCE is in charge of our military in Iraq ??!!!!

AND, IF gays are immoral they should never be called on to fight our wars ...all get honorable discharges with ALL rights and benefits.

AND I would love to here how "moral" he thinks our troops who RAPE women are.....he conveniently forgot to mention THAT!!!!!!!

How "moral" are the felons we now let join in our armed services because we are so desperate for boots on the ground in THE BUSH WAR.

Gen.Pace said, "I believe that homosexual acts between individuals are immoral and that we should not condone immoral acts."

How can a man with such thoughts about troops that are fighting and dieing for him and their country win a war?

The answer is Gen Pace has said he can't win THE BUSH WAR with military action.

My worry about the felons that will serve in Iraq is that crime against civilians and our own men will increase--and perhaps rapes against women and children.

"My upbringing is such that I believe there are certain things, certain types of conduct that are immoral," Pace said during the tape-recorded interview.

Does it make sense that the military would rather recruit a criminal than an honorable gay individual? Pace and others who think along this line need to question their so called "upbringing".

And furthermore, it's certainly no way for a General to support his troops as this fellows personal experience illustrates.

"When I was at Wharton during the run up to the Iraq war, General Pace came and spoke to MBA students. He spoke with such conviction about how his experiences in Vietnam, watching friends die on the battlefield, provided a strong moral compass for him to advise leaders on decisions about going to war. He was emphatic about the intelligence on WMD in Iraq, and convinced a number of us that the intelligence was solid. I left there a huge Peter Pace fan - a man I considered a great leader with a strong sense of morality.

"My heart sank to the floor last night when I saw his comments. I took it very personally, and I'm a civilian. I can only imagine the emotions "closeted-by-regulation" troops are feeling. Somewhere in the streets of Baghdad, a 22 year old has been told he is sacrificing his life under a leader who thinks his love for another human being is immoral. I just hope there are enough voices getting to that soldier telling them how many Americans appreciate the double-sacrifice he or she is making."

I can only imagine how young soldiers who are risking their lives daily must feel after hearing what General Pace had to say. Don't ask, don't tell is bad enough. When will people get it through their thick heads that being gay is as much of a choice as what color eyes you are born with.

Why does the US lag so far behind when all the allied countries have gays serving openly without it being an issue? Is it religion or is it that those in power have the same attitude as some of the ignorant ones that used to post on this board who said it was immoral but seemed overly fascinated with the gay lifestyle and always made it an issue?

It is time for these leaders to stop defining people what they may or may not do in the bedroom.

The armed forces is a joke. They lower their recruiting standards to allow criminals to serve just so they can meet their recruitment goals while they are dismissing qualified people over their sexual orientation.

There excuse is of course troop morale and that gay people will engage in sexual behavior in a fox hole. I do not believe any troops gay or straight will be engaging in sex during a battle.

Show me a "man" that wants to shower with a homosexual man (?) and I'll show you a homo.

It's funny to hear all you gay people saying it's not right.

Yea, it's all right for you. You want to get as close to virgin male butt as you can.

Amen,

Don't know how to break this to you, but you have probably already showered with a gay man--in the service, at your gym or sports club. They don't wear signs, you know. And, they have taste. They didn't hit on you, did they?

Does the "Rev" honestly think any gay man would find him attractive?

In my opinion he looks like Dee Snider from Twisted Sister.
