Wonder if Al Gore is going to make a global warming issue on Mars as well?

Temperature increase could be shrinking the planet's polar ice caps

Shifting dust storms on Mars might be contributing to global warming there that is shrinking the planet's southern polar ice caps, scientists say.

Computer simulations similar to those used to predict weather here on Earth show that the bright, windblown dust and sand particles affects Mars’ albedo—the amount of sunlight reflected from the planet’s surface.

The research, detailed in the April 5 issue of the journal Nature, suggests these albedo variations play an important role in the climate of Mars. It could also potentially explain how global dust storms are triggered on the red planet.

A darkening world
Researchers from NASA and the U.S. Geological Survey fed two albedo maps of the Martian surface into a computer model called the Mars general circulation model (MGCM).

The model calculated the surface temperature and wind intensity on Mars at the times the maps were made. Both maps show the same area on Mars, but one was made using Viking data collected in the late 1970s, while the other was created with Mars Global Surveyor data collected in recent years.

Across the past two decades, the model showed the surface temperature of Mars has increased by about 0.65 degrees Celsius (1.17 degrees Fahrenheit).

“That magnitude of change is comparable to what we’ve estimated for global warming on Earth over the last 100 years,” said study participant Paul Geissler of the USGS.

The model also found that winds have strengthened over regions with the lowest albedo.

The researchers think all these events are related and have proposed a mechanism by which lower albedo drives wind circulation, creating even lower albedo. They think it works like this: In regions where winds blow away dust, the exposed dark ground absorbs sunlight and heats up; some of this heat is transferred into the atmosphere and heats up the air. Just like on Earth, the imbalance in the atmosphere’s heat increases wind circulation above those regions.

“This could lead to a positive feedback effect in which the surface changes strengthen the winds that are producing the surface changes,” Geissler said in a telephone interview.

Well come on Demomorons. Explain this one.

Mars and Earth have warmed up at the same rate for the past 100 years.

Now Stonecold....you KNOW it's because all those humans on Mars are destroying the environment by all those big cars they're driving....all those large, poluting factories, all the trees the lumber companies have taken down. And all the animals PETA has KILLED when donators THOUGHT they were saving their lives.

And of COURSE, all that warming on Mars is NOTHING but THIS Presidents fault.

Once again the Repuugs so called theories are shot down:

And the "global warming" on Mars? Over a period of several years, Mars Global Surveyor images showed that the planet's south polar cap of frozen carbon dioxide has been thinning. This suggests the martian climate may be warming — at least at the south pole. The bloggers also mention research they say shows warming is also occurring on Triton, Pluto, and Jupiter.

But what does this mean? OK, I thought, maybe anti-global warming bloggers can't just e-mail a scientist and have any hope of getting an answer. So I did. I contacted Bruce Jakosky, a professor of geological science at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Among many other things, Jakosky studies the evolution of the martian atmosphere and climate. Here is what he said in his e-mail:

"I've heard the argument and it is not a valid one. The ‘global warming' on Mars is an observed transient effect that manifests itself as a decrease in one location of the covering of CO2 frost (as I understand the argument). The key issue is that it is a transient, not that it represents a monotonic warming ...

"Using the Mars data as an argument for a changing solar constant is absurd. We don't understand Mars well enough to make that case. And, more importantly, we have direct measurements of the solar input to the Earth over a couple of decades now that show no such increase."

But you don't need a Ph.D. in Mars science to figure out that a pattern of warming in one region of Mars (the south pole) observed for a few years does not "global warming" make. It's comparing apples and oranges.

But, like I said, this isn't about science. It just reminds us that nothing — not even our beloved egg-headed planetary research — is immune from being turned into fuel for partisan political warfare.

Absolute faith has been shown, consistently, to breed intolerance. And intolerance, history teaches us, again and again, begets violence.

The duty of a patriot in this time and place is to ask questions, to demand answers, to understand where our nation is headed and why. If the answers you get do not suit you, or if they frighten you, or if they anger you, it is your duty as a patriot to dissent. Freedom does not begin with blind acceptance and with a flag. Freedom begins when you say 'No.'

Speaking about global warming.....there's going to be public debate on the issue being Newt and some other liberal. Won't be gore as he has no backbone and just likes speaking about his 'false theories' but CAN'T debate them with anyone. He'd be asked too many questions he COULDN'T answer. I'll post the debate if I come acrossed it again.

National Geographic:

Melting Mars Means Man-Made Global Warming a Myth

Posted by Noel Sheppard on March 1, 2007 - 10:07.

An absolutely startling report about climate change was published Wednesday in National Geographic which stated "the current global warming on Earth is being caused by changes in the sun"¯ and not by man.

Unfortunately, as this goes counter to the position of an alarmist media and their seeming field general, Dr. Global Warming aka Al Gore, it seems quite unlikely that these revelations will be covered in today's papers or evening newscasts.

Regardless, the earth-shattering piece began (emphasis mine throughout):

"Simultaneous warming on Earth and Mars suggests that our planet's recent climate changes have a natural - "and not a human-induced" cause, according to one scientist's controversial theory.

The article marvelously continued:

"Earth is currently experiencing rapid warming, which the vast majority of climate scientists says is due to humans pumping huge amounts of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere." (Get an overview: "Global Warming Fast Facts".)

Mars, too, appears to be enjoying more mild and balmy temperatures.

In 2005 data from NASA's Mars Global Surveyor and Odyssey missions revealed that the carbon dioxide "ice caps" near Mars's south pole had been diminishing for three summers in a row.

Habibullo Abdussamatov, head of the St. Petersburg's Pulkovo Astronomical Observatory in Russia, says the Mars data is evidence that the current global warming on Earth is being caused by changes in the sun.

"The long-term increase in solar irradiance is heating both Earth and Mars," he said.

To be sure, Abdussamatov is not the first scientist to make this claim. However, for a publication like National Geographic to report - it should stoke some interest in the press - but don't hold your breath.

With that in mind, the article then elaborated by almost thoroughly refuting the hysterical claims being made by an alarmist media and their current leader, soon-to-be-Dr. Al Gore:

Abdussamatov believes that changes in the sun's heat output can account for almost all the climate changes we see on both planets.

Mars and Earth, for instance, have experienced periodic ice ages throughout their histories.
"Man-made greenhouse warming has made a small contribution to the warming seen on Earth in recent years, but it cannot compete with the increase in solar irradiance," Abdussamatov said.

Yet, in an article about a somewhat contrary concept as far as the mainstream media are concerned, - National Geographic expressed great skepticism. In a piece that debunked what the supposed consensus believes on this issue, the magazine spent almost the bulk of the space alloted citing scientists that don't buy Abdussamatov's conclusions starting with, Abdussamatov's work, however, has not been well received by other climate scientists.

¯
However, the idea that National Geographic would present such a contrary view just when so many are buying into the junk science might be an indication that the work of skeptics is finally beginning to pay off.

Stay tuned.

That's a word that only defines liberals.....the ones who want to ADMIT defeat to our enemies.

THEY'RE the SCARED ones.

"While the democratic party complains about everything THIS President does to protect our Nation": "What would a Democrat president have done at that point?"

"Apparently, the answer is: Sit back and wait for the next terrorist attack."
