When Tom Heffelfinger left his job as Minnesota's U.S. Attorney in 2006, he thought he was leaving a Justice Department that firmly backed him.
Heffelfinger said he has been left in the dark as to how he was placed on the list of U.S. attorneys Justice Department officials intended to fire.
Heffelfinger thinks Attorney General Alberto Gonzales was not directly involved in the plan to dismiss him and 25 other U.S. attorneys.
"There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that this entire plan was put together by Kyle Sampson and Monica Goodling, that the attorney general was not fully in the loop on that," Heffelfinger said.
Sampson and Goodling both worked for Gonzales in the Justice Department.
Heffelfinger's replacement, U.S. Attorney Rachel Paulose, worked for Goodling in Washington about the time the lists were being drawn up.
Paulose's office is currently in turmoil due to staff resignations.
"I am proud to say that when I left there, that office was functioning like a fine-tuned machine," Heffelfinger said.
Colleagues including Senator Norm Coleman, praised Heffelfinger as an honorable man who deserved better from Washington.
