Pro-troop organization wants peace mom's land

By Angela K. Brown
Associated Press

FORT WORTH — Days after Cindy Sheehan announced she was stepping down as the face of the anti-war movement, a pro-troop organization said today that it plans to buy her 5-acre protest site in President Bush's adopted hometown.

But Sheehan doesn't want to sell to just anyone.

"It'll be a cold day in hell before she sells it to them," her sister, Dede Miller, told The Associated Press. "She'll sell it to them for $5 million."

Move America Forward wants to place a monument to the troops on the site in Crawford, about 100 miles south of Fort Worth.

"There's definitely symbolism behind being able to take that land and being able to put up a monument that supports our troops," said Robert Dixon, executive director of the Sacramento-based group. "It's purely symbolic. We're not going to be holding any rallies there."

Sheehan, who was unavailable for comment, plans to sell the land on eBay as early as next week with a starting bid of $80,000, Miller said. Since she bought the property last year for $52,500, Sheehan's group has made many improvements, including putting in gravel roads, clearing brush, mowing and planting gardens, Miller said.

Dixon said that after Sheehan's announcement Monday, he was "flooded" with e-mails from Move America Forward members who thought the group should buy the land. The non-profit organization had planned to erect a monument to honor U.S. troops who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan, possibly in Crawford, so "we figured this is the perfect thing to do," Dixon said.

He said the group is "pretty much prepared to do what we have to do" to get the land but does have a price limit, which he declined to disclose. The group retained a California real estate agent to start working on the deal and also will start raising money, Dixon said.

Sheehan gained national attention from her grassroots vigil in August 2005 when she camped outside Bush's Crawford ranch for 26 days, demanding to talk with him about her son's death. Army Spc. Casey Sheehan was killed at age 24 in an ambush in Baghdad in 2004.

Sheehan's protest that summer drew more than 10,000 people to the one-stoplight town of 700 residents. But it also drew counter protests of Bush supporters, including a large downtown rally after a cross-country tour called "You Don't Speak for Me, Cindy!" sponsored by Move America Forward.

Sheehan announced Monday in her online diary that she was leaving the peace movement because of the "smear and hatred" she had endured, not only from the right but the left.

She also said "Camp Casey," the property she bought as a permanent protest site, had served its purpose and was for sale.

Miller said that she and others working with Sheehan have received numerous inquiries this week about buying the land.

She deserves whatever she can get for it, just like anybody else selling RE. She won't be profiting from her son's death anymore than Haliburton is profiting from ALL the deaths of ALL the sons and daughters who died in Iraq. Big deal.

However you chose to look at it, if she sells the property for more than she paid for it, she will PROFIT from Codys death, maybe then she will place a marker on his grave to thank him.

Well, she lived on Casey's death benefit, as his beneficiary so she could carry out her protests.

Then she profited from the book she wrote about his service and her positions on the Iraq war.

Now....wanting to profit again? No surprise....she lost everything - even her family over her un-American, anti-war actions.

There are consequence for everything....some positive, some negative.

She's now coming back to reality of her actions. Her 15 minutes of fame are OVER.

A hard reality.

So anything she does to support herself or secure income, if it's related to her protest then she's "profiting from her son's death". I get it. I guess the same could be said of John Walsh and Polly Klaas' dad too...

I hope she sells it for a profit because it will piss off those even more who are already furious that she had the courage and freedom to speak out.

And hopefully some day she will find some peace in her life. The rats that oppose free speech and the way others choose to live their lives will soon find someone else to kick around and be cruel to.

So, according to neocons, if you purposely kill off thousands of human beings it's OK to make a profit.

But if someone else kills a member of your family there's something wrong with every penny you earn afterwards ????????????

????

"She won't be profiting from her son's death anymore than Haliburton is profiting from ALL the deaths of ALL the sons and daughters who died in Iraq ."

Apples and oranges.

Haliburton, being one of only three companies that do this type of work all over the world......was used in SUPPORT of our troops and hired to serve their needs to support our war efforts.

sheehan worked against the war efforts - made nicey, nice with communist leaders and the rev. extortionist.

Funny how those who STILL harp on Haliburton didn't have a problem at all when clinton ALSO used their services.
When clinton also gave them no-bid contracts.

LOL typical.

============================

"I guess the same could be said of John Walsh and Polly Klaas' dad too..."

Not really. Unless Walsh and Klass were supporting child killers. They weren't. sheehan gave support to our enemies.

=============================

The first conclusion is that I was the darling of the so-called left as long as I limited my protests to George Bush and the Republican Party. Of course, I was slandered and libeled by the right as a "tool" of the Democratic Party. This label was to marginalize me and my message. How could a woman have an original thought, or be working outside of our "two-party" system?

However, when I started to hold the Democratic Party to the same standards that I held the Republican Party, support for my cause started to erode and the "left" started labeling me with the same slurs that the right used. I guess no one paid attention to me when I said that the issue of peace and people dying for no reason is not a matter of "right or left", but "right and wrong."

NOPE! Profiting off dead soldiers is profiting off dead soldiers....can't be wrong for some and right for others.

Hallibuton supported our troops ?????

NOPE! not unless you call over-charging, stale food, and a lack of proper equipment "support".

I see Sheehan as supporting the troops by wanting them out of the fiasco of the war on Iraq.

How about Estate Sales? How about books written by loved ones. How about selling your dead grandmother's house? Let's see. She bought the property for $50,000. Should she just leave and let it lie fallow because of the warped, very biased thinking of some people?

What then would be the honorable thing for her to do bear? If John Walsh and Polly Klaas' dad made a living fighting to right the wrongs that took their childrens' lives, can we begrudge them that? Cindy Sheehan perceives that her son's life was taken due to a wrong committed by the administration and she has worked in her way to right that wrong, whether she did it in an appropriate way or not is immaterial. I for one don't think she did, but I would not begrudge her any money she might make off of property she legally purchased.
