These people have depended upon the government for their whole lives. When are they going to stand on their own two feet.
HUD extends disaster vouchers nine more months

The federal government will extend for10 months its rental payments for about 11,400 families who lived in public housing or received federal housing vouchers before hurricanes Katrina and Rita, the U.S. housing secretary announced today.
About 3,500 Houston-area households will be covered by the extension, said Guy Rankin, executive director of the Harris County Housing Authority.
The Department of Housing and Urban Development's Disaster Voucher Program, which originally served about 30,000 families, was scheduled to end Sept. 30.
HUD Secretary Alphonso Jackson said he and President Bush have determined that many displaced residents still need help, and that ending the program now would be "absolutely horrendous."
Jackson and Rankin made the announcement to about 20 elderly hurricane evacuees who have been housed at Primrose at Heritage Park, a development in north Harris County.
Several residents said they were grateful for the help and for Jackson's willingness to speak to them personally.
A HUD statement said displaced families who lived in public housing before the hurricanes, which struck in August and September 2005, will continue to receive vouchers through June 30, 2008.
Those who received rental subsidy documents known as Section 8 vouchers before the storms will return to the Section 8 program, which temporarily was replaced by the Disaster Housing Voucher program for hurricane evacuees, the statement said.
The nine-month extension will cost about $105 million, HUD spokesman Steve O'Halloran said.

Yep, reminds me of the story that occured in my home town.
We were the place where many of the Katrina refugees were first placed until they found they might have to go to work.
One of our TV stations was interviewing one of the refugees shortly after Katrina and he said he wanted to go back to New Orleans. The TV interviewer said "but there probably won't be any work for you there". I'll never forget this. His reply: "Oh, that's all right, I didn't work in New Orleans before."
A large local grocery chain went to the refugee center offering jobs. How many takers?? NONE

A number of refugees were housed in one of our local church's recreation center. Police had to spend the nights there, because of the problems.
Five of the refugee teen-agers were arrested trying to bring knives into the high school.
After Katrina, a police official of New Orleans said "We are like Mayberry now."
I guess so, they sent all of their problems to Texas. Dallas and Houston had to increase their police forces after Katrina.

From an article last July. The situation has not improved with most refugees saying they will never go back to New Orleans.
"About 150,000 Louisianans remain in Houston, the fourth- largest U.S. city and host to the most Katrina refugees, according to a city estimate. A state study done in May and June showed that 59 percent of evacuees in Texas were still jobless and that more than half were living in subsidized housing.
The influx of people also contributed to a 5.8 percent increase in violent crime this year. Of 381 murders in Houston since Sept. 1, 74 involved displaced Louisianans as perpetrators, victims or both."
New Orleans, is the only city I ever saw where old cars without wheels would stay on the side of the freeways until they rusted. That was before Katrina. Terrible place.

Well....it's a given that old nagen doesn't want the non-workers nor the disabled back in NO. He and another city official said if they can't come back and work...then don't come back. So Houston/etc citizens gets the honor of supporting them for the rest of their lives. As do other taxpayers whose federal taxes are being spent on the same.
We can only hope that after what Texas has suffered through, that should another massive hurricane hit the area again, other cities will have learned from the Houston/etc. cities generosity.
Open your city to them and you'll have them forever....supporting them forever. They are what the democratic party has producted....citizens totally dependent upon our gov to care for them for the rest of their lives.
The increase in crime rates has been in numerous articles....and of course the 'nice guys' who offered them a refuge are going to pay through the nose for all their actions/lack of inaction from the freeloaders. And of course, the gangs that came from NO and are now increaing the crime rates in these Texas cities.
That's what they get for trying to help 'those in desperate need'.

Last time I checked Texas is a red state. It is a red state that is just sitting back and doing nothing. But yet Linda wants to blame the refugees for being dependent on the Texan government. It takes two to solve the problem. If the Texan governments are not doing anything to help the refugees leave then they only have themselves to blame.
You don't hear about problems in other locations were the Katrina evacuees went. The problems only exist in Texas so what does that tell you.

Apparently you didn't comprehend the post, logansdad. "About 150,000 Louisianans remain in Houston, the fourth- largest U.S. city and host to the most Katrina refugees, according to a city estimate. Texans are subsididizing their housing. Some in luxury hotels. Texans are subsidizing their food and upkeep. They are mostly jobless. How the he-- do you think they are living?? Texans are taking care of them. Just where else do you think they went. A handful of them elsewhere. Thousands are still here at the expense of Texans. Red state, yep, and doing fine thank you. From Wikipedia:
"Texas is a dominant force in the economy of the United States. One of the largest growing economies in the nation, Texas is, as of 2006, home to six of the top 50 companies on the Fortune 500 list and 56 overall, more than any other state. [1] Texas has an economy that is the second largest in the nation and the 15th largest in the world based on GDP (PPP) figures. As the largest exporter of goods in the United States, Texas currently grosses more than 100 billion dollars a year in trade with other nations."
Need some help?? BTW, we have no state income tax. DON'T come on down.

Maybe the unions in Texas could get these 'parasites' off their dole if their unions would use them as 'hired feet'.
I mean if unions are using the homeless/etc to picket the hard workers and the companies they WORK for....and get paid for it...maybe the unions in TX could do so also.
They have to be good for something....even if it's only that they serve as bad examples of the dregs of our society.

And it is apparent that you didnt read any of my responses. You people keep blaming the refugees for the states problems. What is the state of Texas or any of the local communities doing to help these people find jobs. Do you think the refugees want to remain in Houston. Again you have no answers, just griping about their problems.

There are jobs in Texas, but many of these Katrina folks never work, their parents and grandparents do not work, their way of life is such it would be hard for them to adjust like getting up at a certain time in the morning and stay on the job all day.
Or they are self employed dealing in drug or hustling, entrepreneur type of work with the freedom to come and go as they wish.
With minimum wage rising, these folks are not the most attractive group of workers for employers.
Of course they want to go back, but the city of New Orelans is broke,it does not and cant afford to have them back.
My neighbor house was foreclosed and eventually turned over to Fannie Mae,it was rented to a Katrina family for months at a very low rate, some ridiculous 200 a month.
They left ,leaving behind a 700 dollars cable bill.

You are calling Americans leeches???
I'm calling the Katrina refugee's that have come, namely to Houston, that refuse to look for work in spite of being offered FREE day care and those same refugee's that refuse to sign up for Louisiana's "Road Home" program, leeches.
These are the same leeches that have never worked and or refused to work, preferring to live in the NO projects on government subsidies and food stamps and breeding several more generations of leeches that will live in government housing, on food stamps and continue to breed more and more generations of leeches.

Those who hold views like helen's will NEVER get it, Bear.
They support taxpayers paying for those who don't want to work from cradle to grave. So just because they didn't take care of themselves BEFORE katrina, they see no reason for them to start doing so now.
Wish there was someway that these bleeding heart liberals could have four times the taxes levied on them....to support those THEY believe deserve it. But, sadly we all pay for the freeloaders that the helen's of our nation so defend. tsk tsk tsk

Isn't sickening how neocons don't mind paying taxes so huge corporations don't have to but they mind terribly helping the poor?
Is that logical ?
Is that the "christian" attitude? Or just linduh's and bear's Fascist attitude. ?

"You cant make someone get a job if they refuse to get off their azzes."
That's because they KNOW the liberal left will always vote to support them - NEVER expect them to take care of themselves. NEVER expect them to get jobs....that's how they continue to get their votes - that's the reason they support income redistribution from those who DO work/have worked for what they have.
The conservatives, some of whom are Christians, believe in giving out a helping hand...but then have quite normal expectations that they will get off the gov. dole and become responsible, self-sufficient adults.

Note how Linduh didn't bother hilighting this quaint little fact directly from the article she posted: "...President Bush have determined that many displaced residents still need help, and that ending the program now would be 'absolutely horrendous."
Funny how the Democrats are to blame... I would love to meet one intelligent neocon some day. So far, they prove themselves nothing but a bunch of idgets.
