...or why repugs aren't bragging

Old Romney debate clip is now a hit on the Web
By Rick Klein, Globe Staff | January 11, 2007

WASHINGTON -- A video recording of former Governor Mitt Romney expressing liberal views became an Internet sensation in the political world yesterday, prompting Romney to call a conservative webcast to say that he has "grown a bit wiser" in the past 13 years.

(Hahaha, not a flip-flopper...he's " grown a bit wiser" LOL!)

He also accused opponents of his nascent presidential campaign of attacking him because of his record fighting for conservative causes.

The five-minute clip from an October 1994 debate against Senator Edward M. Kennedy shows Romney endorsing a series of liberal viewpoints and includes statements of support for abortion rights and gay rights. The clip was viewed more than 12,000 times on Youtube.com yesterday by 10 p.m.

Last night, Romney called in to the conservative Internet broadcast "The Glenn and Helen Show" to react to the distribution of what his presidential exploratory committee called "ancient footage."

"I'm grayer, I'm a little heavier, and I hope I've grown a bit wiser as well," Romney said. "Of course, I was wrong on some issues back then. I'm not embarrassed to admit that. I think most of us learn with experience. I know I certainly have."

The former governor went on to tout his conservative record: fighting against gay marriage, emergency contraception, embryo cloning, and taxes and advocating for the death penalty and English immersion instead of bilingual education.

"If you want to know where I stand, by the way, you don't just have to listen to my words; you can go to look at my record as governor," Romney said.

"Frankly, in the bluest of states, facing the most liberal media in the country, I've led the fight to preserve traditional marriage. I've taken every legal step I could conceive of, to prevent same-sex marriage," he said .

"Now, that's my record," Romney continued. "And maybe that's why people on the other side are dredging up 13-year-old history and attacking me now."

A video of Romney calling into the "Glenn and Helen Show" was posted on Romney's exploratory committee website last night.

Romney has faced growing questions in recent weeks about comments he made during his two runs for statewide office in Massachusetts, for Senate in 1994 and governor in 2002, that appear anathema to conservative dogma.

One of his possible rivals for the GOP presidential nomination, Senator Sam Brownback of Kansas, tried this week to cut into Romney's base of support by touting his own endorsement by a number of Massachusetts-based conservative activists.

On Saturday, at a campaign appearance in Georgia, Romney sought to address those questions head on, saying that his views have changed as he had the opportunity to "benefit from life's experience." The Globe reported yesterday that a group of activists from Massachusetts is touting Romney's work on behalf of a profamily agenda in a letter being circulated among conservatives.

The Youtube.com clip, posted anonymously with the title "The Real Romney?," includes an exchange in which Romney says that the Boy Scouts of America should allow the participation of people "regardless of their sexual orientation," though he says he also supports the organization's right to make such decisions for itself.

He also discusses his support for abortion rights.

"I believe that abortion should be safe and legal in this country," Romney is shown saying. "I believe that since Roe v. Wade has been the law for 20 years, that we should sustain and support it, and I sustain and support that law and the right of a woman to make that choice."

When Kennedy lampoons Romney's position on abortion as "multiple choice," Romney demanded the right to respond.

"You will not see me wavering on that matter, or be a multiple choice," Romney said.

In response to another attack from Kennedy, Romney says that he wasn't a Republican during the presidency of Ronald Reagan, a man he has referred to as a hero during his emerging presidential campaign.

"I was an independent at the time of Reagan-Bush," Romney said. "I'm not trying to return to Reagan-Bush."
