Edwards: Americans should sacrifice their SUVs

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) -- Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards told a labor group he would ask Americans to make a big sacrifice: their sport utility vehicles.
The former North Carolina senator told a forum by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, yesterday he thinks Americans are willing to sacrifice.
Edwards says Americans should be asked to drive more fuel efficient vehicles. He says he would ask them to give up SUVs.
Edwards got a standing ovation when he said weapons and equipment used by America's military needs to be made in the United States. He says tanks and ammunition for M16 rifles are being made in other countries.
He says jobs that provide equipment for America's defense need to be made in the United States.

For Johns info, no new M1Abrahams tanks are being manufactured, period, The existing tanks are undergoing updating and retro fitting at plants in the US of A, no where else. M16's and M4's are only manufactured by Colt Industries in Connecticut, and Lake City arsenal is manufacturing 5.56 x 45mm at full capacity....Bear

Edwards vs. the SUV
Speaking to machinists in Florida today, John Edwards said he'd expect Americans to sacrifice their inefficient cars, and specifically to give up their SUVs,
But campaigning turns out to be a pretty high-carbon practice. All the candidates ride around, particularly in Iowa, in big cars — Hillary rode an 18-wheeler; Obama rented an RV; and Edwards, whose convoy is often mini-van centric, had this Cadillac SRX Crossover (15 mpg) beside him in Iowa on his arrival from announcing his candidacy for president in New Orleans, according to his Flickr stream.
Actually, Edwards isn't anti-SUV — he seems to be quite consciously avoiding the trap of appearing to demand that Americans drive only Trabants. His spokesman says he drives a hybrid SUV, the Ford Escape, at home in North Carolina, though the AP reported in April that the family has an SUV and a small truck as well.
His website says, "Edwards believes that everyone should be able to drive the car, truck or SUV of their choice and still enjoy high fuel economy."
Edwards spokesman Eric Schultz says they buy carbon offsets for the vehicles, and adds:
"John Edwards believes that all Americans need to be patriotic about something other than war, and that means conserving at home, at work, and in the cars they drive. And that includes the Edwards family. They drive a hybrid Ford Escape, but they also still own a Chrysler Pacifica – which they use less often. He is reducing his own impact on global warming by driving a hybrid, building an energy-efficient home, and subsidizing renewable energy to offset the carbon emissions of his home, vehicles, and his campaign."
Of course, none of this automotive stuff holds a candle (to choose an unsafe metaphor) to the gas they're all burning with those private jets.

Must be why edwards numbers are contining to fall WAY behind those of obama and clinton. LOL
He's a 'see through phony' and most are seeing that now...even those from his own party. LOL He talks one story and lives another....in several different ways.
Plus his wife is still attacking his dem opposition. LOL She's working FOR us.

That's correct. But the liberals have two sets of standards - one for THEM and their ilk - ie: slick willie/horndog - and another for others.
