I dont have a cell phone ( I dont have a micro wave oven either).
But yesterday I walked into Kroger and saw a display of 4 cell phones ,price ranged from 39.99 to 99.99 and the catch is no monthly plan ,you buy a card and use it -25 cents per minute during week day from 8 -6 pm (or 9 to 5 pm,(I dont remember all the details)and 10 cents in the evening and weekend.
domestic long distance and text messaging is free.
Is this a good deal?
I dont need a cell phone but then it wont be a bad idea to have one while driving .
So is this a good deal??

I have the new LG and I love it. The battery has a very long life and it's easy to use. It has a lot of features, though, that I'll never use. Still, it was free when I re-signed with Cingular/AT&T. Since I share the service with my daughter, we have a family plan. It ended up being cheaper than if we both had our own plan. Still, it's $95/month for 750 minutes, unlimited nights and weekends and free mobile to mobile.

If you are only going to use it for emergencies or on an occasional basis, the deal you're talking about will be good for you. It sounds pretty good.

I agree with Classic.

Whether or not it's a 'good deal' would be based on your individual needs.

I received a free phone from Altel. I too pay $.25 a minute - no monthly charge - but only for time used. Since I only have it for emergencies I rarely use it. So that makes it a GREAT deal for me.

Now if my circumstances were different, or I was working....that would cause me to make other choices. But this works very well for me in my current situation.

thanks,95 dollars is too much for me,since I seldom need a cell phone.
But the EBay deal sounds good,Classic, what should I search for??
I heard battered women can have a used cell phone to call 911 free.

We use TracFones...have them all over the place, one in every vehicle, one in each barn, the kids all have them. Out here in the boondocks we get a great signal and have far better call quality than we've had with any other carrier. Don't get suckered into a 2 year contract just to get a free phone. You'll hate yourself for it. Tracfones are pay as you go, no contract or other BS...depending on how much time you buy at a time, you can get your minute costs down to 15 cents or even better and you can get a decent phone for 15-20 bucks.

hwahwa-I have a Nokia and it works fine.I really dont know one brand from the next, but as long as it comes with a charger and you only want to use it to call 911,I think any brand would be okay. However I do wish I had one of those "camera phones"? is that what they call them where you can take pics from? Me and the wife went to a rock concert in Bethel NY on Aug 11th-it was on the original site of the Woodstock concert of 69.They built a new pavalion that looks like SPAC or the Greek Theater in LA.They've been holding concerts there for 3 years now. There were 7 groups from the mid 60's to early 70's there. They dont allow recording devices of any kind, but I saw several people taking pics of the band with their cellphones.I dont know how good the quality is,but it would have been cool to have.

Yes you can get a free cellphone for battered women,at least here in NY you can.

I think people who use their cell phones while driving must be very limber....talking on a phone with their head up their ass takes some dexterity!

Your fearless leader 'we the poor people' does it everyday and it does not seem to bother any of her constituents.

hwahwa-not for nothing, but I think your friend needs a life.Im not sure why anyone would do this, but I think he has a problem.

I agree with crowfarts assessment-its not only dangerous, but in NY its against the law,but people do it all the time anyway-nitwits.

This friend of mine lives in the 'tenderloin district' and reports to us all the eateries, for example a non descript convenience store ,the owner wife runs a restaurant inside ,now is that legal??
Then there is a sushi bar on the mezzanine level of a new supermarket, food is cheap and delicious,so he takes a picture of the food and shows it to everyone and also becomes a friend of the sushi chef.
He takes pictures of his friends eating in the restaurants he recommended,so it is not like he is randomly taking picture of any diner.
But I agree,he needs a life.
