OK, here's the general, the ultimate Iraq "expert", the guy who has ALL the information, in HIS OWN WORDS:

When asked by a senator if the war in Iraq had made Americans safer the general replied,

" I don't know."

When a senator noted the "coincidence" of the report coming out on 9/11 he asked the general if there was any evidence that Iraq had anything to do with the 9/11 attacks, the general answered,

"Not that I'm aware of".

Oh boy, we're going to cut troops. Cut them all the way back to the level they were at before we raised the level. So in another year we'll be in the same place we were a year ago. And the improvements in Anbar are due to pre-surge initiatives.
Most telling is the General's insistence that we're doing the right thing while refusing to say that the war is crucial to the safety of this country.

He won't last long. Betcha

Really???? lol

So is the profe suggesting that even though the dems/liberals voted for/supported Petraeus 100% that now that he hasn't spoken what THEY wanted to hear, rather than the truth as he sees it, then now the cowards will AGAIN reverse themselves and work to get rid of him?

LOL IF so that wouldn't surprise anyone who can see how the libs/dems can reverse their positions with the change of the wind, just as they did with taking us to war in the first place. tsk tsk tsk

First off we will not be really cutting troop levels. They will be decreased because there tours will end. They can only be there for 15 months before they need to be sent home. Is that really a cut in troops?

The General refused to speculate about whether we are safer at home because of the surge. Who could blame him for that? This is one of Bush's key points however, and sooner or later he's going to have to do a Colin Powell if he wants to stay on the team.

The liberals are yapping once again.

But the REAL question is - the TRUE way to see IF they are serious - will be IF they NOW vote to stop funding the war(s).

Or will they continue to SAY they want to bring our troops home, out of one side of their mouths, but not propose legislation to STOP funding.

Remember they COULD have stopped the funding, ending the war(s) WAY back in January. Problem is they can't get enough support to do so. They're NOT in the majority on this issue.

Imo, they'll continue on down this same whining row. Talking one side of the issue....voting the other way.

General Petraeus' testimony WILL hurt their chances of ending the war.....no doubt about that.

The general cautioned against any talk before March of whether it would be wise to go below the pre-surge level of 135,000, and Bush is expected to endorse that idea.

The president also will say that even ending the surge will depend on continued security gains and no unforeseen events that change the dynamic.

edited to add: From CNN today:

"Ahmadinejad has said in the past that Tehran would fill any power vacuum left by a withdrawal of coalition forces in Iraq."

The United States has cited the Iranian president's remarks as a reason to continue its efforts in Iraq.

http://www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/meast/09/12/ahmadinejad.itn/index.html

Imo, one of the BIGGEST reasons to stay.

If the general presented Bush with the idea that the Earth is the center of the universe, Bush would endorse that. Bush has no real combat experience so he will listen to anything the military elite say and he will rubber stamp it.

The president also will say that even ending the surge will depend on continued security gains and no unforeseen events that change the dynamic.

The president has been saying the same thing for years so that is not new.

Bush has mentioned he will start withdrawing troops by next summer. Isn't that a deadline. All the enemy has to do is just sit back and wait. Now Bush is aiding the enemy. What a flip flopper. He once claimed timelines aid the enemy and he has just done that.

NOT at all what he said. Might try reading a source where HE'S actually quoted....maybe you can grasp it then. But I'll still have MY doubts about your ability to understand it even then.

Just for ld, so he can TRY to grasp that it doesn't matter what percentage of AQ we're fighting in Iraq. What matters is how much their actions are disrupting the war. And that we NEED to fight them there.

Petraeus blames al Qaeda

September 13, 2007

By Sara A. Carter - Army Gen. David H. Petraeus yesterday called al Qaeda the "wolf closest to the shed" and said he disagrees with Democrats' calls for an extensive withdrawal of troops from Iraq by next year.

"I did spend a fair amount of time the past few days talking about the consequences of an al Qaeda-Iraq sanctuary in that country, about the fact that we believe that al Qaeda-Iraq is off-balance," Gen. Petraeus told reporters at the National Press Club.

"They are the organization that has carried out the most horrific attacks in Iraq and in particular those that have sparked the much greater ethno-sectarian violence."

The U.S. commander in Iraq and U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Ryan C. Crocker, fresh off of two days of Capitol Hill testimony, said Iranian activity in Iraq is contributing to sophisticated attacks on coalition and Iraqi forces.

"Again, there's no question where they have come from," Gen. Petraeus said. "And the evidence is very, very clear. We captured it when we captured Qais Khazali, the Lebanese Hezbollah deputy commander, and others, and it's in black and white."

Gen. Petraeus said he would be uncomfortable calling for a troop reduction larger than the 30,000 he recommended to President Bush, who is expected to endorse it in a prime time address tonight.

Mr. Crocker reminded reporters that three of his past six years in the Foreign Service have been in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iraq and said al Qaeda's influence in the region should not be ignored.

"Those are all fronts in the fight against al Qaeda," Mr. Crocker said. "We have to assume that anywhere al Qaeda can find operating room, space, ability to organize, consolidate they're going to use that to come after us."

U.S. operations in Iraq over the past year have yielded results, said Gen. Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in Iraq. He added that the troop surge helped reduce al Qaeda's influence in the Euphrates River valley, Anbar province and Ramadi, and that "Baqouba has been cleared."

He noted that al Qaeda's bombing of the golden-domed al-Askari mosque in Samarra last year on Feb. 22 nearly tore the fabric of Iraq society apart. It was an attempt by al Qaeda to destabilize the fragile country and its fledgling political system, he said.

"We don't know what would happen if al Qaeda had a sanctuary in Iraq from which they could presumably export violence, perhaps train others," he added.

"We just don't know. Would it be focused in the Levant, in the Maghreb, in — back in Afghanistan, Western Europe, the United States?" he said. The first two refer to the countries of the eastern Mediterranean and northwest Africa, respectively.

Gen. Petraeus is a soldier. A soldier follows orders. The present and future plans have already been decided by Bush & Co. and will be carried out by Petraeus because he is a good soldier. Bush seems to be a little smarter than some of us think(I know, that's not saying much.) He knows that most Americans do not trust him, but they still trust the military. That's why Petraeus testified first and when Bush speaks tonight, he will seem to be reinforcing the military.

You make a ton of false statements and never have more than your liberal opinion to back it up.

Democrats to cut missile defense plan

(AP) (9/13) - A Senate panel voted yesterday to reduce the funding the Bush administration requested for a planned U.S. missile defense system in Europe, making it more likely that construction on the project will be delayed.

And voters expect these same politicians to PROTECT us and our Nation.....????? I sure hope not.

Linda thinks having a missile defense in Europe will help protect the homeland. That missle defense system must be used to protect us from all those WMD missles that Saddam was building to launch against the United States.
