Oak Lawn Schools Cancel Holiday Traditions
School District To Discuss Cancellation Or Renaming Of Holiday Celebrations At Emergency Meeting
Suzanne Le Mignot
Reporting
(CBS) OAK LAWN, Ill. A southwest suburban school district has taken action, responding to the concerns of a Muslim parent.
But now, as CBS 2's Suzanne Le Mignot reports, other parents are angry that traditional school holidays will be renamed or even eliminated.
"That does not represent all the Muslims, all of the Arabs at that school," said Qais Nofel, the father of a student in Ridgeland School District 122.
There was some heated discussion between parents outside Columbus Manor Elementary School in Oak Lawn on Friday. The thought of no more traditional holiday celebrations has many parents really upset.
For now, children in Ridgeland School District 122 will celebrate fall festival instead of Halloween and winter festival instead of Christmas.
Brenda Elvidge said, "It's not fair to our kids. This is America and that's an American tradition."
The decision affects the children at four elementary schools in Oak Lawn and one junior high school in Bridgeview.
The district has a 30 percent Arab-American population, many of whom practice Islam. The superintendent says the reason for the change in tradition comes after one parent wanted Ramadan decorations put up inside Columbus Manor Elementary. They were taken down.
Superintendent Tom Smyth said, "I go back to our policy which says that public schools are to remain neutral in this respect."
Ridgeland School District 122 has called for an emergency meeting on the issue, to be held on Tuesday.
Meantime, Muslim children are being allowed to pray during what's being called their own time, that's lunch time, during Ramadan.
Parent June Quigley said, "They get to pray in our schools. That is religion in a public school."
Muslim parents have different views on the issue.
Sala Abour said, "To take away Halloween and Christmas from little kids, that is very wrong."
Nofel said, "We go and we celebrate the holidays and traditions here, but we do have the right to be Muslims as well."
Other parents say the controversy is overshadowing what really needs to be addressed at all five schools in the district.
Ronnie Carroll said, "The fact that they are cash strapped. Our classroom size is way above the average mean, 38 children in our first grade classroom. The concern should be our school, not the whole holiday issues."
Those issues along with the holiday controversy are going to be addressed at a school board meeting on Tuesday. Members will decide if holidays will be celebrated or not.
Meantime, the Illinois PTA district director says the state is now investigating this issue and there's a meeting with the superintendent next week.

To hell with A L L
the
holidays.....schools are for LEARNING.
No holiday in schools equals NO wasted time, no wasteful controversy.
But the neocons, about this time every year, NEED to bring up their phony chant of the "War on Christmas".....
...it's the new tradition
Oh, and I didn't notice any reference to anyone's political affiliations....just more lies by embarrassed neocons...

If parents don't like.....
Yep, exactly what many ARE doing.
Then they have to fight tooth and nail against the liberals who don't want to ALLOW them to home school. Saying it will hurt the bottom line of public schools IF too many parents pull their children out of the liberal indoctrination schools.
This is nothing more than SOME, in this case being MUSLIMS who the liberals SO support, defend and what to grant MORE rights for their terrorist....vs those who have also tried to assemble in public schools on their own time to ALSO pray.
Funny how one is allowed and the other isn't. But guess it should be no surprise....the liberals fight the Christians doing the same thing they're MORE than willing to allow MUSLIMS to do.
Just more of their DOUBLE STANDARDS. tsk tsk tsk
"While the democratic party complains about everything THIS President does to protect our Nation": "What would a Democrat president have done at that point?"
"Apparently, the answer is: Sit back and wait for the next terrorist attack."

Neocons support Muslims every day and every way by encouraging the war to continue in Iraq...yet turn around and call them "terrorists" !!!????
BOY! What CONFUSED standards....

Too bad the raving neocon can't point out any !!!!

Exactly what lindak is doing, Mingo!
Bet she never thought that the fighting would force more out of their own country and now more will be coming to America to practice the freedom that she brought them. They are already in the school system whether lindak approves or not, right in her own country. So now she should suck it up and quit whining and put out her welcome mat as more become American citizens with the same rights she enjoys - it's what she's fighting for and what young Americans are dying for, right? After all, even George said "Bring 'em on".

Why , linduhKKK, do you consider Muslims in Iraq worth the lives and mutilations of our troops but you think that Muslims in the US are terrorists????
I know there's not a logical bone in your body but this defies any semblance of reason whatsoever.

Linduh must have forgot to take her pills again. The only double standard I can see is the double standard that Linduh has created in her own little world.
What is wrong with celebrating seasonal festivals? I look at it like this... Celebrate the seasonal festival, then celebrate your own damn personal holiday with your family. You get two for one on the deal. What is so bad about that???
It's like a child having one jewish and one christian parent. You get 12 crappy gifts like a dradle and socks from one parent for Haunakah, then you get all the DVD players, X Boxes, LCD flat screens, and whatever else you can cram under a 6 foot tree from the other parent. I am sure the child will figure out which religion is better for them... LOL

rusty's projecting again. Maybe since he needs some pills he thinks others do too.
clue phone - they don't.
And the whole point is that liberals bend over backwards to put 'foot baths' in gov. run places for the muslims - allow prayers in public indoctrination schools - because it's required by THEIR religion....while liberals and groups like the aclu fight against ANY mention of Christian religion in ANY public, gov. supported place.
It's called a double standard, whether or not the radical left is willing to admit it.
Either ALL can practice their religious beliefs or NONE can. Either gov. can pay for ALL religious practices or NONE. Not this nonsense where liberals allow it from their muslim 'friends' and fight their American brothers and sisters from having the SAME/EQUAL opportunities.
And I'll NEVER support ONE parent being able to control/change what has ALWAYS been American traditions.

Linduh says, "I'll NEVER support ONE parent being able to control/change what has ALWAYS been American traditions."
I think you missed the point of the article. First off, it was one parent who raised concerns, not control or change anything... Second, the school has a 30% Muslim population. Third, there is no such thing as "Always been American Traditions".
There is no absolute in American Traditions. America evolves, and that is something to be proud of. America changed to end slavery, America changed to give women the right to vote, America changed to give people Civil Liberties, America changes every day. Hell, America changed to ban alcohol, and then changed back to allow citizens to drink it. So, if you think you're going to be able to force your bigoted ancient ways of thought... you obviously haven't learned from the past.
Linduh says, "Either ALL can practice their religious beliefs or NONE can. Either gov. can pay for ALL religious practices or NONE."
So which do you prefer??? You simply can't expect government to indoctrinate your personal religious beliefs over everybody elses. You complain about Muslims and all the rights you claim are extended to them. Why isn't your complaint ever about all of the rights and respects made toward Christian beliefs as well? I don't see you bitching about manger scenes in front of government buildings, or Christmas Trees in the White House. You bring up a war on Christmas and accuse "liberals" for everything (unless you can put all the blame on Bill Clinton). If you want to accuse others of double standards, you need to look in the mirror (do they have mirrors in padded rooms?)... you are the one who is making your own double standards.
My belief in this matter is more aligned with real "conservative" americans. Keep religion out of schools, don't pay a dime for any religion. There is nothing wrong with praying in a school or government building. It is a personal moment, and should never be a government sanctioned event. I have no problem with a moment of silence, or a football team gathering on the field to say a prayer. Each individual who participates can pray or worship whomever they want... but to invoke a Christian god over all others is simply wrong.
It is the neoconservative christians who make this an issue by screaming bloody murder. They pretend to "respect" other religions, but when you read or listen to their statements like Linduh's, it is quite obvious it is nothing but a charade.

I perfer ALL. But IF we're going to acknowledge other religions in our schools....it certainly DOESN'T mean that our 'traditional' holidays NOW need to be removed. There is NO constitutional verbage that states ones religion STOPS at the school yard fence.
NONE
And celebrating Christmas has always been an American tradition....we even made it a NATIONAL HOLIDAY.

As a follow-up this school board district has now decided that Christmas will NOT be cancelled. It will continue as it always has.
posted on October 3, 2007 07:31:25 AMThere IS a double standard going on here....whether you idiots refuse to acknowledge it or not.
The only idiot is you Linda. You fail to understand the concept.
Public schools are not supposed to be teaching relegion. In this case the school was approximately 30% Muslim. If you are going to be celebrating the "Christian holidays" why not celebrate the "Muslim holidays"? If the schools decide to celebrate one set of holidays over another, the school is essentially endorsing one religion over the other. Which then is illegal. You claim to be open minded, but you only want things done your way.
The parent who brough this up with school officials never wanted the school to cancel any holiday celebrations only to be FAIR in how the school recognized all religious traditions.

This applies to Muslims and Jewish people as well. Their religious beliefs do not stop at the school yard fence either. So they also have rights to have their beliefs and traditions represented if the school is going to be practicing Christian traditions.

Linda it is you that can not grasp the concept of freedom of religion and how it applies to public schools.
You are the one that needs to take a civics class.
Some schools and businesses try to incorporate the diversity of all religions during December, by having one celebration/event but it is people like you that get your panties in a bunch by saying people are trying to take away Christmas.
It only goes to show how intolerant you are of other people's beliefs.

How many times have I asked linduh the following:
"""""Why , linduhKKK, do you consider Muslims in Iraq worth the lives and mutilations of our troops but you think that Muslims in the US are terrorists???? """
Of course, she can't answer but here's a simple explanation.
No. four of Fascist characteristic:
""""4. The supremacy of the military/avid militarism
Ruling elites always identified closely with the military and the industrial infrastructure that supported it. A disproportionate share of national resources was allocated to the military, even when domestic needs were acute. The military was seen as an expression of nationalism, and was used whenever possible to assert national goals, intimidate other nations, and increase the power and prestige of the ruling elite. """"
In other words, war for war's sake, death and destruction as entertainment, unifying the bloodthirsty (and frightened) behind the military.....

Linda it is time you start chasing your own tail because it is obvious that you dont know what you beleieve any more.
Linduh says, "Either ALL can practice their religious beliefs or NONE can. Either gov. can pay for ALL religious practices or NONE."
This was the entire argument for the debate.

posted on October 3, 2007 11:38:43 AMAnd celebrating Christmas has always been an American tradition....we even made it a NATIONAL HOLIDAY.
Christmas was not made a federal holiday until June 28, 1870. So much for "tradition" This country survived for hundreds of years without Christmas being a federal holiday.
More mis-statements by Linda. But what else is new.
the United States does not have national holidays (i.e. days where all employees in America receive a day free from work and all business is halted). The U.S. Federal government can only recognize national holidays that pertain to its own employees; it is at the discretion of each state or local jurisdiction to determine official holiday schedules. There are eleven such "Federal holidays" -- ten annual and one quadrennial holiday.
The annual Federal holidays are widely observed by state and local governments; however, they may alter the dates of observance or add or subtract holidays according to local custom. Pursuant to the Uniform Holidays Bill of 1968 (taking effect in 1971), some official holidays are observed on a Monday, except for New Year's Day, Independence Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.
Furthermore Linda Christmas was originally a "winter festival" before the Church turned it into "Christmas"
A winter festival was traditionally the most popular festival of the year in many cultures. Reasons included less agricultural work needing to be done during the winter, as well as people expecting longer days and shorter nights after the winter solstice in the Northern Hemisphere.[11] In part, the Christmas celebration was created by the early Church in order to entice pagan Romans to convert to Christianity without losing their own winter celebrations.[12][13] Most of the most important gods in the religions of Ishtar and Mithra had their birthdays on December 25. Various Christmas traditions are considered to have been syncretised from winter festivals

Don't worry Linda,
The demomorons will never understand. When you have people like Mingopig, logansdunce, rustydumbo, kiara and the rest of the un-educated, there will always be a failure to recognize what is right and what is wrong.
What is right is New Years, Valentines, Easter, Independence Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Not, new calendar day, Friendship day, Spring Fling, Summer Celebration, Mid-Fall Celebration, Harvest Celebration and Winter Celebration.
In no other country do they drop their own values because an outsider cries. The cryer is told to adapt or leave. It's time to close the boarders, arrest the illegals and send them home.
.
.
.
If it's called common sense, why do so few Demomorons have it?
