I have to take my pet to the vet today and was thinking... since many pet owners don't have children, and pets are dependent on us taking care of them... and corporations get all sorts of stupid tax breaks... shouldn't our pet expenses (particularly pet medical) be tax deductible?

weigh in...

There is this PA farmer, for 16 years, claims Jack and Jill as dependents .
Jack and Jill finally died, donkey life span is around 16 years .
Oh,I should add -back then you dont need to report their SS numbers on the income tax return.

I have 250 sheep, 25 head of cattle, 15 dairy goats, 30 horses and god knows how many chickens, geese, turkeys and guinea hens and they're all tax deductions. I guess letting folks take a little off the top for Woofie wouldn't be so bad.

Oh yeah, I forgot the pigs. Two pigs too....and then there are the guard dogs, six of em and the herd dogs,4 not counting the puppies due any day and the barn cats and my son's homing pigeons and let's see maybe I could count the bass, catfish and Crappies out in the pond and I don't want to think about how many bedbugs are out in the bunkhouse......

We have squirrels who destroy our back yard tomato crop every year...250 dependents who also generate a major loss!

Without those squirrels we would owe big bucks to the IRS.

Helen, my neighbor grows tomatoes and he has a 12" electric fence around his garden.

That may work, Niel! I'll check it out.

Squirrels can be very persistent and clever though. They will probably start hopping the electric fence and digging tunnels.

Then the tomatoes will be attacked from birds overhead and my crop loss claim to the IRS will continue with an added expense of fencing material.

Did anybody watch "Animals Behaving Badly" on PBS? Some prankster kept taking a yellow ribbon down from a treee. The homeowner suspected teenagers in the neighborhood. His neighbors showed their support for him and put up yellow ribbons on their trees. Still his and only his ribbons were taken. Finally, they busted the culprit on video - a squirrel would ease the ribbon down to the ground where it could untie it, then scampered away with it to line its nest. The squirrel preferred the softness of cotton to the synthetic fabric the neighbors used. They are smart little critters.

Are they racing horses?

hwa: The majority of them are Spanish Barb horses. I breed them primarily for sale. Most buyers purchase them as show horses or as additions to their own Barb herds. I also use them on the ranch as work horses in moving our sheep and cattle and for hunting. My family has raised Spanish Barbs as long as anybody can remember.

Coursing through their veins,
the blood of the ancient ones.
On their backs rode Caliphs, Conquerors and Kings.
They have run with the eagle, and
felt the earth of unexplored lands beneath their hooves.
Their past...forged from the steel of endurance.
Their present...built on the heritage of the past.
Their future...guided by the reins of destiny.

Why not. Pests are already deductible. Mingopig, Helen, Rustydumbo, Proof-he's-an-idiot just to name a few.

Maybe we should learn from Alberto Caeiro that cold stone has nothing to tell us.

pixia, love that squirrel. I'm going to put some ribbons on my deck & hope they will take them.
I save dryer lint all year & scatter it outside in the Spring. The birds pick up every bit of it & use it for nest building. These guys need all the help they can get.

About tax deductable pets, absolutely yes.
