All we can get in our grocery stores are peaches that are peach-colored but not ripe. I've never found a good method to ripen them at home, and I've just had to throw out a peach that was unripe yesterday and rotten now. Yikes. Any suggestions?

Ever tried putting them in a paper sack with a ripe banana or apple? It works with tomatoes and avocados, might work with peaches.

I just did a search and found that your technique will work for bananas also. Those greener than green bananas found sometimes in the grocery store may be edible! With a bunch of bananas use a large zip-lock bag and the ripe apples that you suggested or cut up apples. The ethlene gas released by the apple does the trick.

Thanks, you two. I'll give it a try. About a month ago I bought a bunch of bananas at our local grocery store that were Really Green. Figured if we left them out for a good while, they'd ripen. Never really did.
And with peaches, hope springs eternal. Sometimes they ripen, sometimes they don't, and they're expensive here.

How to Ripen Peaches and Nectarines to Juicy, Sweet Perfection at Home:
Simply place peaches and nectarines in a loosely-closed ordinary paper bag and set on the kitchen counter for one to three days - away from direct sunlight. Check daily for ripeness. When ripe, the fruit will become very aromatic and give to gentle palm pressure. After the fruit is ripe, it can be placed in the refrigerator for up to a week or so.
