Bear, you just have to fact the facts that the more money you make, the more taxes you pay. It has been that way since Income Tax was introduced. It is the patriotic thing to do!

Actually, I look at it (the higher tax for higher income thing) as the socially and morally responsible thing to do. I'd gladly pay more taxes if I had the income to do it. I don't work one job. I don't even work two or three jobs. I work FOUR of them and still I'm struggling to make ends meet. Health care bills take most of what I make since I am one of the uninsured. And yet, tonight I took the last $20 I have to my name and donated to an organization that helps the children of victims of abuse. Guess what, Bear? I'm a liberal - one of those stinking socialist liberals that you like to talk about. If that's what I am, than great, because at least I know that I've spent my life helping where I could.
My conscious is clear. How about yours, Bear?

Whitman said she and McCain share a philosophy of scaling back the role of government. a point of view partly shaped by her EBay experience. "The EBay model is very Republican in its essence -- it's about making a small number of rules and getting out of the way while not overtaxing the community," she said.

No wonder the Chinese are all flocking into this country-
Chinese communist party members are elite and they get their chicken and pig from a special farm where they are fed with better grains.
while the rest of the population peeled tree barks and swallowed sand on the beach, thanks to Chairman Mao's economic reform.
Coming soon to a theatre near you-Chairman Obama'S Economic Reform!
The Chinese also get to show off their slim trim supermodel size body by wearing 1/2 yard of cotton fabric allotted annually and vow to stay slim and trim by allowing themselves 10 oz of meat per month.

Cheryl,
higher income taxpayers already pay higher taxes.
Say if we have a flat tax rate,35% of 10,000 is 3500 dollars,but 35% of 100,000 is $35,000.
Rich people also give generously, many donate millions to fund medical research.

Most of that presentation is the death rattle of people who sense that their reign is over. I think there's plenty of blame to go around, but I think a huge proportion of it has to go to Alan Greenspan, who is anything but leftist. Regarding inflation, of course we're going to have more, what do you expect when you cut taxes and spend like a drunken sailor on wars?
Hwahwa, I'm not generally in favor of income taxes that are not progressive, but if a flat tax comes with NO deductions (other than an income floor based on dependents) and if they do away with payroll taxes (the most regressive tax of all), then it might be the lesser of evils.
It would end the uneconomic behaviors that are performed simply for tax purposes, and it would stop attempting to foster social purposes through tax policy (housing, charity, etc.).
I don't think a flat tax stands a chance of being put into law.

It doesn't. It would put too many gravy-trainers out of work.
Personally, I think the whole concept of taxing
income is unfair. We ought to tax consumption and be done with it. The country'd be awash in sales tax money the way we love to buy junk we don't need.
Oops, I guess that makes me some kind of libertarian or something.
"It would put too many gravy-trainers out of work. "
That's true, but it would also displace honest, honorable, hard-working tax accountants. They do exist; I've known a few (and probably more that were parasites). They would have to be re-trained to do more useful accounting (and there is a lot of accounting that is both useful and non-tax related). I am not sure that all of them would find other employment.
Consumption taxes are great if you can work around their extreme regressivity. There are ways, of course, as many state sales taxes aren't charged on groceries and such.

"You forget that these "tax the rich" people think what THEY pay is a significant part of the tax burden."
Any person of average intelligence knows that the tax on their $50,000 income is not a significant part of the tax burden. However, the tax is a significant part of their income. Being taxed according to your income has been around since the inception of Income Tax, so why get worked up now?

Because by definition of the tax RECIPIENTS, I and most here seem to be "the rich people". Meaning I work for a living.

Myth: People on welfare should just find jobs.
Fact: The natural rate of unemployment is 5-6 percent -- and impossible to reduce to zero.
Summary
The U.S. economy averages a 6 percent unemployment rate. When it drops below that, the economy starts "overheating" -- that is, inflation starts climbing. Therefore, the Federal Reserve keeps unemployment stabilized around 6 percent -- which means it's impossible to eliminate welfare by finding everyone jobs.
Argument
Many welfare critics believe that anyone who wants a job can find one. The fact that so many millions are on welfare, they believe, is a sure sign of a poor work ethic, laziness, immorality, sloth, etc.
However, Milton Friedman won a Nobel Prize for his discovery of the "natural rate of unemployment" -- which is the unemployment rate that inevitably results when inflation is what the markets expect it to be. Today, most economists calculate that the natural rate of unemployment is about 6 percent. When the unemployment rate starts dropping below this, the economy starts "overheating" and developing a bad case of inflation. To combat this, the Federal Reserve tightens the money supply, which brings unemployment back up and inflation back down.
The upshot of all this is that we will always have 6 percent of our workforce unemployed. It is therefore wrong-headed to demonize these temporary unfortunates for not having jobs, or accuse them of lacking a work ethic. Even if we could put them all to work, the result would be runaway inflation -- a prospect which sends shivers down the backs of markets. Furthermore, a small reserve pool of labor is healthy for the market, because it keeps the economy flexible and capable of change. It means that there is always a percentage of workers who are moving between jobs, finding a better match between their skills and the jobs available. It also means there is a percentage of the workforce leaving obsolete jobs and now training for more modern ones. Because a reserve pool of labor is a benefit for business, it should be a cost of doing business -- hence, the rational for social benefits and public job training.
Calling for the unemployment rate to be reduced to zero is terrible economics. Yet this is precisely what many welfare critics are trying to do by chasing everyone off the welfare rolls and into jobs.

Pretty much BS. Unemployment can be seasonal, due to people moving, etc. The unemployment figure does not mean the same 5% are always unemployed. 0% unemployment is impossible. But "permanent fixture" on a welfare roll is not.
You even have significant numbers who work to "charge up" their benefits so they can become unemployed again.

"Pretty much BS." That is your very biased opinion--and it is only an opinion. I prefer to take seriously what a Nobel Laureate has to say.
Cash--Thanks. Economics is not my strong point, but I thought it made a lot of sense.
