This morning on tv news for the Inland Empire (mostly Riverside County, California) is a story of a Republican group that's sent out "Obama Bucks," meant to look like food stamps. A cartoony Obama doing a soft shoe in the center, and 4 images: watermelon, ribs, a bucket of chicken, and I forget the fourth one. A black Republican woman is outraged and brought it to the attention of the tv stations. Interviewing the husband of the woman who sent this thing out had him saying of course it's not racist because HE likes watermelon, chicken, and ribs. Pretty awful.

And our son in the Bay Area sent this to us this morning:
>
> A Halloween display included a ghost with the name Obama (upside down) and “Hussein”—misspelled—spray-painted on his chest. The guy who did it had the chutzpah to admit that it “wasn’t political, it was racist.” He also said that the US is a “white, Christian nation.” I noticed the prominent Star of David on the top of the effigy’s head.

Sadly, the South does not own racism. I am sickened by all of this. Palin has poisoned the campaign by riling up the faction that heretofore did not have the guts to demonstrate their hatred publicly. I hope they have stepped up Obama's security.

It was a pitcher of Kool Aid roadsmith. I saw it last night on Olbermann or Maddow. Racists will always be with us, but they are as you say emboldened by Palin for the time being. They'll go back into hiding in a few weeks.
