Greed. It just seems to be all about greed.
Now I will predict that "family-first" people will commend her for including her children and will say more working mothers should do that--ignoring the $$ issues here.
Nothing wrong with including children when appropriate, but it is definitely illegal to bill the state for their participation. Our city council, when we traveled from Utah to D.C., could bring a child or a spouse along, but it was made perfectly clear that we would pay those extra expenses, even down to meals, coffee, transportation within the city, etc.

That is HER family first - to heck with the rest of us.

A poll is not a prediction. It is a snapshot of how people are thinking right now.

If she can't go out of state on official business without her children, how is she going to handle being VP when she has to go out of the country? I don't mean to sound sexist, but it appears she can't be both mother and politician at the same time. Sure, it makes her look like a good mother, but it also makes her look like a weak leader. Men have been politicians and have had families and you don't see them hauling their kids around. What's wrong with her husband taking care of them?
Do we really want a portrait hanging in the white house of a woman in an apron with children and a soccer ball at her feet? Geesh, Palin, go home already.

Whitman said she and McCain share a philosophy of scaling back the role of government. a point of view partly shaped by her EBay experience. "The EBay model is very Republican in its essence -- it's about making a small number of rules and getting out of the way while not overtaxing the community," she said.
