It appears that there are those who believe we should be forced to revert to wood stoves, using out-dated electronics, and wearing our relatives’ hand-me-downs, so that we will not waste or pollute. Will we soon be living in a third world country where everyone earns the same, and is supposed to think, dress and eat the same? Is this the change we were promised?
Perhaps the RT can set up an exchange for old socks, dead batteries, like new nylons, underwear, mattresses, and pillows.
Not to worry, I bet the kids are being told that President Obama needs your help.

how in the H does "available to schools" = something that the department of education or the President himself is involved with or promoting in ANY way?
I bet there's all sorts of crap that is "available" to schools, if you want to just make factually correct but completely bogus connections.
hey, did you know the new Michael Moore movie is "available to schools" to? oh yea, next thing you know we'll all be swearing in to a communist flag!
or
hey, did you know the whole collection of dukes of hazzard episodes is "available to schools" - yea, next thing you know we'll all be flying the confederate flag and trying to turn back the Emancipation Proclamation.
Not to worry, im sure Faux news will be explaining shortly that if everyone just thinks the same and repeats the same BS they are shouting word for word that will somehow preserve our individualites.
Good video, vintageu! And it's one that the schools should use!
Reminds me of a song that I heard today....Suzanne.
Suzanne was a recycler.
Now Suzanne takes your hand
and she leads you to the river
she is wearing rags and feathers
from Salvation Army counters
And the sun pours down like honey
on our lady of the harbour
And she shows you where to look
among the garbage and flowers...

vintageu, the big girl panties and the sock representing your ID seem to suit you well, maybe you should keep them.

Helen, CBC National once did a story on the real Suzanne.
"But what about the woman behind the lyrics? She remains relatively unknown, although her story is as interesting as the song she inspired. Suzanne's tale is less poetic and more complex than you might imagine, even tragic. It speaks of a beautiful young woman, an artist in her own right, who inspires an up-and-coming young poet to write an immortal love song."
"Forty years later, it's still possible to see what inspired the poet to write his song about Suzanne, but not even the perfect mind of a poet could ever hope to imagine where his muse has been in the meantime."

For some reason I'm getting errors on YouTube so can't watch the video right now. Maybe RT regulars are swamping the servers.
Without seeing it, I sure don't see anything treacherous in teaching frugality to kids. Nor do I see anything bad about pointing out the pitfalls of wasteful consumption. I've raised kids who know full well the value of a dollar and have learned the hard way about profligate spending. When you live 2 miles from the trash pickup, you learn the value of reusing, repurposing and recycling as a lifestyle pretty fast. For us, the benefits to the planet are important, but secondary.
Saying something is "available to schools" is just plain silly. EVERYTHING'S available to schools.

In my area, we are required to recycle trash such as paper and plastic. Computers, batteries, scrap metal including lawnmowers and sewing machines are recycled by the Division of Solid Waste Services. I am always amazed when we take something to the dump how much usable "stuff" is dumped. But nothing can be taken out.
Used bikes can be donated for reuse through Bikes for the World.

Hey, most of you would like the video and what it purports to innocently represent to the school children.
Why wouldn't you? The video was produced by the Tides Foundation.
"Tides Foundation partners with donors to increase and organize resources for positive social change."
Which is my concern. Based upon the information available from the Glen Beck Show, and internet blogs, I do not want a video produced by this group to be shown to young children. No matter how innocent it appears.
Edited to add: thanks for the link to the story of Suzanne's later years, Kiara. I (and I'm sure my sister) have had the poem/song memorized since high school. I'm puzzled by the columnist's disbelief as to where Suzanne's life led her. She led a Bohemian lifestyle 1960's version then, she lives a Bohemian 2009 version life style now. Not that much has changed except that there are no affordable apartments for starving artists in most cities. Suzanne is 40+ years older, disabled, but still has the charm to win new friends.

"Who is Drummond Pike? Other than the positive endeavors that he is involved with now, he was a member of the Weathermen. You might remember them because the "...Weathermen advocated the overthrow of the government of the United States and the system of capitalism; toward that end, they carried out a campaign of bombings, jailbreaks, and riots." --From Weather Underground"
Which is my concern. I do not want a video produced by a group founded by a former member of the Weathermen to be shown to young children. No matter how innocent it appears".
Do you want a video produced by an adulterer, a pedophile, a tax cheat, pornography addict to be viewed by young children, no matter how innocent it seems? How silly! The only way to assess the appropriateness of videos for kids is by their content, not by a background check of the originators.

Vintagu, what you should fear, is the imperialistic war movement of the United States in the Mideast and the conditions in this country that favor the elite and oppress the majority. Obama and his administration hopefully will be successful in alleviating such injustice. You should be happy that those children are singing their hopeful little songs and watching videos that, in this case, denounce environmental abuse ...not just in our country but throughout the world.
Every action that Obama has taken so far has been made in an effort to right the wrongs that are perpetrated on the majority of Americans so that revolutionary movements such as the weathermen organized will not again be needed to rally against racism, sexism, homophobia, classism and imperialism.

What a load of carp. Nothing original, just the same old worn out party line.
It must be difficult to accept the advantages of being an American, while disliking the system which provided those advantages.
While many are striving to be part of a great country, and advance through hard work, these guys and others similar to those who post such garbage on this board, are working to tear it all down.

Sorry helenw there is no one here known as Tex.
Instead of feeding us the same old tired liberal line, why not state something unique and refreshing? You know, something based upon Christian values, or at the least with some moral value.
Reliance on thinking in the past is an old liberal trait.

Gee, "Vintageu", you speak and think exacly like Tex1. Your words, your sentence structure, even your punctuation and more importantly your opinions and manner of reply are exactly like those of Tex1.
In other words, a Tex1 by any other name would still be a Tex1.
But I'll call you "Vintageu" if that's what you prefer although I would rather call you a mealymouthed pissant.

Pixiamom, I agree that Suzanne seems to have not changed much from her original Bohemian lifestyle. There are women who have their male versions of a Bohemian-type Suzanne who touched their lives forever. Some of the most beautiful and haunting relationships are those where the mutual craziness is what drew the couple together and there were no bad feelings or specific reasons for the parting, just life circumstances that never really brought them together again. It's a moment in time that may never be recaptured and it would be terrible if, years later, it was tainted by the reality of where they had been or what they had done or who they had become since then. Perhaps Cohen feels that way about Suzanne.

Vintageu, perhaps I missed it but could you provide a link to a legitimate source showing that Drummond Pike was once a member of the Weather Underground?
posted on September 27, 2009 03:54:55 PM new
I did do my own research and the only reference I could find of Pike being related to Weather Underground was on sites where they were ranting about the indoctrination of school children and they all seem to worship people like Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin. So I thought you may know of a more reputable source but I surmise by your comment to me, you're also unable to find one.
You seem so angry, perhaps it's frustrating that others don't agree with your beliefs or fall into line and you are beginning to fear them?
I hope I don't anger you too, remember I'm just easily amused.

So am I. In fact, I appreciate the opportunities that are and have been available to me as an American.
As to being angered, or fearful of the remarks or beliefs of others; that is not so. I guess I am just tired of reading posts by others which are just the same old garbage.
For all any of us know, these posters do not believe what they post. Their purported opinions may just be an illusion. It all depends upon the time of day. A few beers, or drinks, and off they are in liberal lala land.
If no one has noticed, virtually all posters who may have held a contrary view to the liberal view of the day, has been driven from the board. Contrary posters have been insulted, called various names, written down to, and are now known as pissants.
