A friend of mine believes there is a curse on elections that end in zero. (Now for those of you who feel the need to lecture me I don't believe in curses) She said many are shot,
shot at or just plain die in office when elected in a year ending in zero.
I have not gone back and researched every presidency but I'm sure nasty things have happened because I know she did do the reasearch. I'm sure nasty things happened in other years too.
But it looks like whoever wins at this point there are going to be a whole lot of people unhappy about it.Maybe that is going to be nasty and unpleasant enough to satisfy any curse. No matter what the outcome in Florida there are always going to be people that suspect foul play. (I'm one to believe it was merely operator head space)
I went to bed thinking that GW was the next president and although I don't like him I do respect the office and will continue to do so.
So congratulations Whoever.

It is called "The Zero Factor". I have the book by William Oscar Johnson on it. It states that any president elected in the years ending with a zero will not leave the office alive. Regan was the only one that escaped this fate. However there was an attempt made on his life that could just as easily taken him out.

It is an old book but an interesting one.

Shove one or the other in there asap, because he will only be there 4 years anyway. Next time, Hillary will be sitting there and ol Bill will be First Gentleman.

Reagan was alive but many think he wasn't entirely "with it" when he left.
I know the current trend is if you hate the president you naturally despise the wife also but even though I didn't vote for Reagan and didn't like what he stood for I do admire Nancy.
She has stood by and protected her husband through it all.(a very unappreciated move these days)Yes she was tough and yes she was opinionated but then so am I.
I tried to find recently something in the news that said how Reagan is doing but I couldn't.
Anyone heard anything?

Not very well at all. He doesn't know his own family and he has lost most of his motor skills. He probably won't be around much longer. Very sad. Whether we liked him or not as President he will go down in history as a great one.

His condition has degenerated considerably. He is unable to recognize family members, but the good thing is that he is being taken care of at home. No matter how you feel about him, or one's opinion of his presidency, this is an awful awful disease, as I know firsthand. My heart goes out to his family.

I am very glad Nancy is keeping him out of the public eye. I'm sure this is not how he would want to be remembered.

It states that any president elected in the years ending with a zero will not leave the office alive.
Aside from a bad reading of statistics, this is just plain wrong. Three "0" year presidents DIDN'T die in office: Jefferson, T.Roosevelt, and Reagan.

Moreover, three other "non-0" presidents died in office: Taylor, McKinley and FDR.

All the statistics show is that more presidents elected in "0" years (19% of total presidents) died in office than non-"0"-year presidents (7% of total presidents). That's juuuuust a bit different from showing a causal relationship between the year and the death.

Interestingly, 1 in 4 presidents - no matter when they were elected - have died in office. Half were assassinated; the others died of illness ranging from pneumonia to cerebral hemmorhage.

As for the "zero" factor, technically, the election of the president is not offical until the electoral votes (which are cast in December) are opened and counted in a special meeting of the senate, which takes place in January. (Since the Electoral Voters are not required to vote based on the popular vote, although the generally do, the results are not final or official until then) Based on this, no president was ever been "officially elected" in a zero year and only one has ever begun his term in a zero year and that was Millard Fillmore who replaced Zachary Taylor, who died in office, but was not elected in a zero year either.

If the zero factor is reffering to the presidents that were officially elected in the year following a year that ended in zero in which the popular vote was conducted, than that of course is bs also as noted in the post above by HCQ.

Just quoting the book:

"Since 1840 no President of the United States who won election in a year ending in zero has left office alive."

William Henry Harrison - elected 1840 died 1841

Abraham Lincoln - elected 1860 died 1865

James Abram Garfield - Elected 1880 died 1881

William McKinley - Elected 1900 died 1901

Warren Gamaliel Harding - Elected 1920 died 1923

Franklin Delano Roosevelt - Elected 1940 died 1945

John Fitzgerald Kennedy - Elected 1960 died 1963

I feel it is just a big coincidence but like I said, I still find it interesting.
