No this isn't exactly a thread about politics. It's about the TV show The West Wing with Martin Sheen as president. Even knowing that he plays a Democrat I think he duz A heck of a job as Pres. on the show. I had heard that this show is as close to the real thing as they could get. I also heard that the press sec'y C.J. on the show was allowed to open an actual press conference for President Clinton one time.
Do any of y'all watch this show and what do ya think of it.
Well gotta go it's on right now, I try to watch it every Wednesday night.

Wednesday night is a popcorn and TV night in this household.
Star Trek Voyager at 8PM
West Wing at 9PM
I have decided that Martin Sheen will be the real President of the US of A and Kate Mulgrew (Captain Janeway of Voyager can be Vice President)
Any objections??? No---okay, can somebody phone the White House and tell them

At work when we talk about the President, we are talking about President Bartlet. One line he used in one show "decisions are made by those that show up" i've used this line dozens of times at work and it has become an accepted excuse when I defend my decisions on different issues. LOL

I've said it before, I'll say it again: West Wing is the BEST show on TV.
The season opener was just awesome. The writing is fantastic and the actors are just so good.

I don't like the latest addition to the cast - the blond lawyer with the squeaky voice. Her character, doesn't make any sense. On one hand, she is shown as having a background as a confident, hard-nosed TV interviewer/reporter. On the other hand, she acts in her scenes as a naive young woman with zero confidence and little experience in handling people. It doesn't jive.

Yesssssss! West Wing is the best show on TV. It is absolute appointment TV for me--or taping if I'll be out of the house. Fabulous writing.
And I'm not sure how I feel about the new little blonde. I suspect that she's just learning her place in the White House and the writers will unleash her in some episode later on--sort of like Hunkrah in Doonesbury, with the forked tongue and flames coming out of her mouth.
One of the things I love about the show is that it's making a case for all sorts of issues I believe strongly in, and making the case in a way that the public can probably understand.
When C.J. sang that song or said that poem, or whatever it is, to a crowd last year, I about fell off my sofa.

Tried watching it a couple times. I was so put off by Sheen's (or his character's) sanctimoniusness and the heavy-handed This Show Has A Message, And We Know Better Than You tone of the program I couldn't stand it for more than 10 minutes. (Mind you, this from a person whose idea of TV entertainment is a documentary.)

I've actually never watched the show.
HCQ, you make it sound a bit like Dr. Quinn in the White House. Do they have a character that is really good at throwing hatchets and making diving tackles? Any cute little buck-toothed kids?

Yep, the best TV I've seen in years, bar none. Of course, put Martin Sheen in something, anything, and I'm a fan.
I also like The Practice (Sunday nights), but it hasn't seemed quite as good this year. Last year it was just stunning (even if I really abhorred some of the story lines). This year it's been real good, but not great. Or is it just me?

CleverGirl: This is a real coincidence. The editor of our local newspaper is crazy about West Wing and has also regularly watched The Practice. He and I e-mail each other occasionally about West Wing episodes. He said a while back that he's always enjoyed The Practice but feels that it's generally lost its edge in recent months. And I agree. I think The Practice gets a little too far out sometimes, Twin Peaks-ish. There's enough material for them to go on indefinitely doing *real* things without the heads in a bag stuff, I think. So now I don't fret so much if I miss The Practice--figure I can always catch it in re-runs later on.
Same for NYPD Blue, which I used to never miss, and even Law and Order is losing me some. Suppose it could be the superior quality of West Wing that's spoiling me for other shows?

I have watched the show from the beginning. My favorite episode so far was last year's Christmas episode. All of the characters are well written. Can't seem to decide who my favorite is. I think if I was made to decide it would have to be Leo.

I don't play favorites, I think that everyone on the show adds to its success, even the sqeaky voiced blonde lawyer. I couldn't imagine what the show would be like if any one character would have to leave. On the otherhand, if that were to happen I suppose that the writers would write an episode that would make it seem allright. They do have a heck of a writing team for the show don't they.
