My printer won't (print, that is)! Windows says it is unable to send document to the printer (from any application). I know zilch about these things, but I've tried the obvious: checked the power, checked the cables, the device manager, reinstalled the driver...Anyone have any ideas? Or am I sol?

Is it an ink jet printer? Mine gives me that message when it's out of ink.

It's an Epson Stylus Color 440 inkjet printer. It has ink. It will not print at all; the status monitor says it is a "communications error" (the document can't even get to the printer, apparently). I tried a new printer cable; still no luck. I really can't afford a new printer right now...but I can't figure out what's wrong with this one. One day it's fine, the next...zilch.

I would try some basic housecleaning as well as reinstalling the drivers. Don't just reload the printer drivers, go to the Printers folder, delete that printer, reboot and install it fresh.
Before you do that, run a scandisk and defrag. Then check for temp files in the Windows/Temp folder. Delete any .tmp files you find there. Also, look in the C: folder for .chk files and delete any you find. Do a clean reboot, then install the printer driver again. Double check all the connnections etc just as if you were installing it for the first time.

Poppinjohn, several years ago I used an Epson color printer every day, different model number but similar to yours I believe.
Have to agree with Meya about deleting the printer entirely and starting over with a brand new install.
That printer was extremely "sensitive". The slightest little thing would cause it to not perform, i.e. not print. Reinstalling the printer software from the beginning would be a good idea.
Also that printer is known for "locking up" and not printing if the print nozzles are even slightly blocked. Run whatever diagnostics and test prints you can after you reload and do whatever the software suggests to clean the print nozzles, can't recall the procedure from memory anymore.
I loved the print quality - when it worked right! Once we even had to take the laptop to a PC repair shop and have them do the reinstall ... it was worth it. Something about that program....
