Yesterday morning I dropped off my cat at the Vet for some tests. Last night I went back to pick up the empty cage. Today is 13 years to the day since I first brought P.J. into my home as a kitten.

P.J. in happier times:

I'll miss you....

Irene, This is so sad. I have been through it numerous times and it never gets any easier.
Thirteen years is very old for a persian, you must have given her much love and good care.

Looks like you have a lot of good memories..13 years worth!

This is one reason I NEVER get close to animals...growing up they all died...so I don't let them near my heart..ever.

Same with 'old' people(now that I'm 50 I don't know exactly how to describe OLD)..they all died..so now I can't get close to the elderly.

Actually it's kinda sad...I'm sure I'm missing out on a lot of opportunies to stretch and grow.

Irene, I don't know you. I am a new poster. But I wanted to give you my heartfelt sympathy. PJ is beautiful and you will carry memories of her in your heart forever. That knowledge may mean little too you now but in the future those heart memories will bring you happiness that you shared your life with your wonderful PJ.

I'm so sorry for your loss. We've been through the same thing a number of times...it is like losing a member of your family.

My condolences. As we've made a habit of adopting older animals, we've said goodbye to quite a few, but it doesn't get any easier. I'm grateful for the time we did have together, though, and years later can still feel the texture of each sloppy nose on my face. Woulnd't have traded that time with our beasts for the world.

Irene, I will give each of my six (yes, six) cats a hug in memory of P.J. The first is my 10 year old bottle baby who happens to be in my lap as I type. I'm sorry for your loss

I bet that was one loved cat. We lost ours two years ago a few days before Christmas. We still sometimes find wiskers in the house.

I'm sorry to hear about your pretty cat. We've had to put four cats and a dog to sleep - it never gets easier. But each animal is unique and leaves many pleasant memories. As much as I swear that I'll never get another animal because it hurts too much when it dies, I always do.

Hi Stockticker,

I am so sorry. I know lots of people think pet lovers are a little off to become so attached to animals but our dog, Molly, is just like one of our children and it hurts terribly to loose our pets.

Dh even has his father's and his old faithful hunting dogs that hunted as a pair for many years burried under our old cedar tree and even carve their names on old sandstones and we planted an old rampling white rose bush on each of them.

So sorry to hear about your loss. I once had two silver-tip Persians, both sisters, and litter mates. They were great company and lots of fun, one for 13 years, the next for 14. When the first one passed, my wife and I were so heartbroken, it was if a child had died. But the memories are great.

Irene, my sympathies. I know how sad it is to lose a beloved pet. So often I think of my dear bunnies and other pets who have "passed" and remember their warmth, affectionate nuzzling, and vivid personalities. They were such a comfort when times were difficult and people got me down. I try to keep in mind that the animals we cherish were put here to teach us about unconditional love and having taught us, they move on to a better place. You gave your beautiful cat a full rich life and now his work is done. You were both lucky!

Thanks everyone. It's tough. This caught me completely by surprise. I thought I was dealing with a simple dental problem when I took P.J. in to see the Vet on Saturday. That was the Vet's original diagnosis as well.
