posted on February 12, 2001 08:20:40 PMThe Hunt for Red October tops my list, followed closely by The Mission with Robert DeNiro. Red October was the only movie I enjoyed enough to go back to the theater for repeat viewings.

Goodfellas is a favorite of mine, too. I also liked Magnolia a lot...always catch something new each time I see it. High Noon, Braveheart (for music and cinematography alone) and Midnight Express also top my list.

Shawshank Redemption is right up there. I also really love the movie Silkwood. But I think Papillion is the best.

Lawrence of Arabia (must be seen in 70mm at a grand theater)
Lawrence of Arabia excelled on all levels, cinematography by the great Freddie Young, sweeping musical score by Maurice Jarre, fantastic attention to detail by the great director Sir David Lean. Top notch acting, story, and art direction... I don't think they'll ever be able to make a movie on that scale again.
Honorable mentions
John Ford's "How Green Was My Valley", "Grapes of Wrath", "The Quiet Man", and "The Searchers"

My all time favorite movie?
Star Wars, after all I am a Space Cadet...
Others that are high on my list;
Hot Dog, The Movie. Crazy Skiers, a mountain, snow, nice music sound track, wet Tee-Shirt contest and laughs.
Harold and Maude. Crazy teenaged male who drives a Hearse meets an older woman (Ruth Gordon) and romance blossoms. Did I mention his fascination with suicide?
The Blob. Crazy Blob from outer space consumes people in small town USA.
The Blue Lagoon. Two Crazy teenagers running around half naked (OK, more than half naked) on a tropical island.
Night of the Living Dead. Crazy dead people come back to life and must eat brains from living people to kill the pain of being dead.
OOOP's, stusi asked for one favorite, I guess I got carried away~~~

I have to say that THE most exciting movie I ever saw, and one that did not disappoint me, right to the end, was "Close Encounters of a Third Kind". Thrilling movie! LOVED IT!

Going wayyy back loved, Zorba the Greek. More recently, The Color Purple, Shawshank Redemption was excellent....loved the HAPPY ENDING (never really expected it) I really hate movies that telegraph the ending halfway through the plot.

"Matewan" (John Sayles, director), hands down. Great movie, great story, terrific cast and wonderful use of music to show the slow coming together of communities.
Others:
"The Third Man"
"Seven Samurai"
"L.A. Confidential"
"The Conversation"
"Empire of the Sun"
"Bedazzled" (the original with Dudley Moore and Peter Cook)
anything by Steven Soderbergh, especially "The Limey"
anything by the Coen brothers
and for sheer fun: "Jaws" and "The Magnificent Seven"

I normally hate seeing movies a second time (what's the fun when you know the ending?), but there are 3 I own and watch periodically:
Raising Arizona (my all time favorite, I have seen it at least 20 times)

My fave has got to be Dangerous Liasons (sp?). John Malkovitch, could there BE a better actor? I also love Footloose, I know it's cheesy, but it reminds me of high school.

Hard to pick an absolute favorite, but North by Northwest has always been up near the top. Cary Grant at his finest!
And the Daniel Day Lewis version of The Last of the Mohicans. The cinematography was tremendous.

Rules are made to bend, right? So...
Lawrence of Arabia
Amadeus
Dangerous Liasons
Glory
Jaws
West Side Story
Greystoke
Dracula (Gary Oldman)
Spaceballs
Indiana Jones movies (1 & 3)
Excalibur*
Chinatown
The Last Emperor
Anything with Marilyn
Anything with Bette
Anything directed by Alfred
But, if you really pinned me down to just one favorite, I would have to say...
Lawrence of Arabia.
*Thanks for the title, roxw. Excalibur is a terrific movie, having seen it several times. I seem to have a mental block when trying to recall it's title, though.
