We Have bought a Tivo by Sony. We heard that you can watch a show 30 hours back. For ex. IF I wanted to watch Survivor I could just type in Survivor and it would play? Is that what it does or did we buy the wrong thinG?

I haven't heard of it but when you get it set up let us know. It sounds great. Not paranoid anywhere else but here!

Lou....We purchased Tivo for Christmas...One of THE best toys I EVER got!!!....(second only to my Sony Mavica Digi Camera).....It is basically an intelligent VCR, it records TV according to your preferences, either shows you select or shows "like" those you select...It does automatically record the channel you are watching for 30 minutes, so you can back it up and review...you can freeze the show, and backup (great for phone calls or snack runs or bathroom breaks)...you can freeze frame, you can replay in slow motion (great for sports) even replay frame by frame...We have the 30 hour model (30 hours of recording time) & unless we specifically recorded a show we cannot go back in time & view it...We can select Survivor or any other show for that matter to record each time it is run on ANY channel (be careful with this feature, as Tivo will find ANY showing and record it....In the beginning, somehow I selected Martha Stewart & kept getting her regular show + the one in Spanish! - YIKES!).....
Read the instruction manual....Watch the prerecorded "welcome to Tivo" show & you'll quickly find out all Tivo can do for you!....If you have any problems, just post here, as my husband had become an expert in getting it to do what "I" want it to do!....

Yeah, but can you *keep* something you particularly like that Tivo has recorded for you? Or does it just record over what was on it once it's drive is full?

You will need to remove the stuff you recorded to make room for the new. You can select wich to keep and to delete incase theres a show you want to hold onto longer.

bunnicula...To answer you question, no, there is no tape slot...As danfn indicated, you "mark" shows that you want to keep & Tivo will not automatically erase them when it gets full...The Tivo models are in hourly increments, ie. 30 hr, 60 hr etc. The "quality" (a Tivo setting) that you record on will dictate the time for each show (ie. "best" is longer than "good"and ulimately how much you can store on it....In our case we have both a VCR & Tivo connected to our TV, so we can record more than one show at a time (one to Tivo, one to tape)...If we have recorded something on Tivo that we want to save forever (ie. TV special or special movie) we can transfer from Tivo to VCR tape..
An additional bonus (& favorite of mine!) is that if you are recording a show you don't have to wait until it ends to view it...ie, you show started at 10:00pm...you come in at 10:20, you can goto Tivo and back it up to the beginning of the show (while it's recording) and watch from the beginning..allowing you to zoom thru commericals...You can also watch commerical free if you just offset your viewing time by about 15 minutes....
Besides the recording features, being able to backup to something you missed while tending the kids or answering the phone is super!

While reading my morning online news I came across this article. In case anyone is interested in news on Tivos, I thought I'd share.

Thanks Linda for the link. I had heard or read that about Tivo that they were gathering info about the viewers -names & such with what they were watching. Now they don't share the personal info just the viewing habits.
I know it is done on the internet like webtv but it does bother me. In a sense in my opinion it is an invasion of privacy.

Interesting article Linda....The benefits I have from my Tivo outweigh any viewing info they are gathering on me.....
Gravid, yes, you can run the Tivo output to VCR for saving....
