Have used Yahoo for years but have grown disillusioned with them.
Can anyone suggest an alternative?
I want news, ability to track a portfolio, the reasonable expectation that they will still exist in 6 months and no search bar on top of pages accessed from the site ala about.com.
Anyone?
Thank you

http://www.excite.com
Have used Excite for several years wih no problems. There is a delay only when Excite is upgrading site. However, standard site page is always available until your start pages loads, which not long.
If you erase cookies you will have to log in again.
You can configure the page as you want and can list endless links. Start page has search line but you can omit or put at bottom of page.
You can (also) set all colors as you wish or select a preset design.

exite sucks, only good for television schedules, but filled with foo-foo BS and distorted and petty reports. Great for the type of people who would be fascinated endlessly by colorful hanging mobiles over their cribs.
Netscape is quick, all business, and well organized. I switch between it and yahoo. Yahoo has good access to facts which can be quickly called up to refute the statements of ignoramuses.

Hi VM!
You might also try CNN. On the other hand, a start page isn't really necessary, just keep bookmarks of your favorite sites and wander between them. You can make a fluff page of your own to start on and have links on there to the sites you like best.

a FLUFF page therp? Are you talkin' to me? Are you kidding? What part of me did you mistake for fluffy?
Thanks all, I scan these, and I do like an all in one thing.
krs - have you noticed Yahoo does not update their headlines very often anymore, or is it my imagination?
Thanks again

VeryModern:
Netscape cloned the Excite "Start Page."
On Excite you can eliminate much of the garbage via configuration. On Netscape, you cannot.
Tell me what you would like and I'll create a start page for you. All you have to (then) do is change the "User ID" and password used for setup, and the page is (privately) yours.

sgtmike - I am blushing!
I want all the headlines I can get in all categories, and a portfolio. That is the main thing.
Secondary - a calender and/or a reminder type deal would be nice.
Colors? Dealers choice!
Thank you!

We use the Excite start page too. I like being able to customize it with local news, sports, stocks etc. I don't find it to be full of foo-foo bs, but I don't read all the news links from Excite either. We have ours set up with our choice of links, not just the excite news ones.
I have started one of my own but haven't had time to work on it much yet. I'll have to remember to hang some pretty mobiles on it though so I don't get bored.

Lycos is pretty good. I use MSN at the moment. I have a strange attachment to it; basically it's the direct link to my hotmail account on the page that keeps me coming back, but everything else you are looking for is there too (except there's a crappy Microsoft search engine -- one of the absolute worst ones I've ever tried -- splashed out on top).

I will be sending your "Start page" to the email listed in AW profile along with MEMBER NAME and PASSWORD.
When you load
http://www.excite.com
you will click on SIGN IN at top bar and enter MEMBER NAME and PASSWORD.
Start page is usable as is, but can be changed.
Layout is 3 column but can be changed to 2 column as well as order of display.
All colors can be changed.
"BOOKMARK" section is your "Favorite Link" section and can be edited. I have entered some links I use but can be deleted.
I have entered alias personal info to enable configuring page. Go to "MEMBER INFO" to change to actual info and correct ZIP to receive info respective to your particular locale e.g., weather, local news, etc.
"MEMBER INFO" is where you change your PASSWORD and PROFILE.
To Change "MEMBER NAME" you will have to email Excite to change. You will love the one I have given you on a temp basis.
If you decide not to use START PAGE, you can delete PAGE and personal info by going to MEMBER INFO (or MEMBER SERVICES), then to "MEMBER STATUS" at bottom of page and the hit "DEACTIVATE.
If you want to temporarily leave the MEMBER NAME and PASSWORD I have given you, I can make changes for you until you are familiar with configuring the settings.
Also, you are automatically assigned EXCITE EMAIL.
