Check out this site www.grc.com and go to the "Shields Up" page to get your PC tested for dangerous leaks. I may not understand everything this geek speaks, but it sure was intriguing! In fact I was able to close an open portal on my machine which may prevent scanners from attacking my personal files.

Let me know what you think!

WHAAAA??? Ohhh...

Yeah, that is a good site. I have a firewall and always wondered how that worked, and the program tested it for me.

Tested - FULL STEALTH MODE!
and
There is NO EVIDENCE WHATSOEVER that a port (or even any computer) exists at this IP
address!

I am using ZoneAlarm
http://zonealarm.com/

Free for personal use.

Would you like to have your portals probed? Well, yes, but only by Xardon.

I am really uninformed about this subject.

Why would anybody want to probe my files?

My question is what kind of damage can be done?

Potential theft of information, and compromise of privacy Helen. That's why I use it anyway.

Thanks, VM

I guess it doesn't apply to me. I don't have
any info that I couldn't share with the world
on my little computer.

Helen, it's kind of unnerving, however, when Zone Alarm pops up and says someone is trying to access my computer!!

HJW: Actually, even if you don't have any personal info on your computer (which most people do, remember this includes passwords to sites [like PayPal]) your computer could be used as a 'stageing ground' for an attack on someone else.

Remember the ebay attack? Well, that attack was launched from several 'innocent' computers. That is, someone came into the innocent computer through an open door (portal), dumped in a program, and then the innocent computer sent an attack to ebay.
