I will check it out, but only to sneer at the people letting those guys yell at them for money. Be a cold day in hell before I took that. Money or no.

Just saw a clip of the show. The "recruit" was being drilled to call the female "di" *ma'am* and the male "di" *sir*

Whatever happen to "Don't call me ma'am I work for my living?" During my time, only female officers were called "ma'am."

Times do change!

I won't be intersted in watching it. I went through 10 weeks of bootcamp -- that was enough for me. Besides, no TV show is going to be able to duplicate the mental stresses that come from being in boot camp -- so why not just tune into reruns of Gomer Pyle instead?

My step son actually sent in a video application for this show...
We told him he should be GLAD he wasn't selected, as he would have been crying as soon as he got off the bus.. (NOT the way he would use to "Get the chicks", which was the major motivation of a 19 yr old..lol )

I will watch the first episode and see what happens...I hope to God Vuc doesn't get hooked like she did with "The Mole"...what a piece of crap!!! And they are now casting for "The Mole 2"!!!!!

Speaking as a former Drill Instructor...we were'nt all bad. Did my time at Ft. Dix New Jersey, 1969-1971. I'll probably watch the show to bring back old memories.

kards, did you get an ulcer? Seems that would happen, what with training new recruits. Stress, strain, all the above. Just curious and no offense meant. The movies show us one side. Would love to hear the other side.

(I keep picturing Full Metal Jacket movie)

I dont know how you (the people who went through it) did it. My temperament would never have taken the verbal abuse. No way, no how.

No ulcers, just bad knees LOL...verbal abuse only lasted a couple of weeks. Purpose was to take away your individuality and make you think as a unit. I was able to communicate with the trainees on their level since I was very close to their age, not a career soldier.

Bobbysoxer

I agree, did a 6 month TDY in a WAC company for training purposes. Boy was I glad to get back to my unit. Those ladies were tougher than any of the men ever thought of being.

Hello kards1

I went through basic at Dix. Started on April Fools Day of 1970. Charlie 3-3. Chargin' Charlie. Hated every minute of it.
No offense. In hindsight, it was a worthwhile experience.

I found it amazing that every DI affected the speech patterns and mannnerisms of a good ol' boy from Georgia even if they were born and raised on Long Island. Was that part of DI training?

Remember me?

I've seen the commercials for that show.

Don't know if I will watch it, but I am hopeful someone will make a shirt with:

Save the drama for your momma and PUSH!!

I want that shirt.

Pocono, I was in the US Navy in the 70's and 10 weeks at San Diego was bad enough. Each service tailors their boot camps to that type of service requirements. With the Navy, they wanted to emulate being out at sea in a steel can for months on end with no privacy, no elbow room, and virtually no contact with the outside would. It was like being placed inside of a pressure cooker and letting them turn up the heat until a third of the recruits had cracked and gone home to momma. Later, I learned that Army grunts actually got to go off-base on the weekends during training. I couldn't imagine what that would be like. I could have done 16 weeks without blinking if I got to go off-base on the weekends. Hell, I heard they were even allowed to go to the NCO club at night to drink near-beer.

I see you...the guy in the green suit right? We were probably on the field at the same time. I was D.I. for 2nd Platoon A-4-3. Seems like a hundred years ago. LOL

That's me front and center, Muriel. I'm holding the flag (they call it a guidon in the Army).

I might still have that uniform.

Hmmmmm, my son just got out of Basic a few months ago and he said he wasn't allowed to call the DI's SIR. He had to call them drill sargeant. Sir was reserved for officers.

Guess this is the "new" Army.

Only officers were called "Sir" when I was a Drill Sergeant. We worked for a living.
