I just saw my first ad in the new format - for Amazon. Not only are they huge, but they are animated / streaming. I have a cable hookup but it is not enough.
Will need a new computer if these are going to be the norm.
Blech!
Ads are on Excite - click any news item. Would like to hear from someone with a modem regarding loading time.

Yikes! I use Excite for my start page, but hadn't clicked any links today. That is just horrible. We have a cable connection too, but there is a terrible lag while that ad loads, then you have to put up with that huge ad in the middle of the page.
Time to write Excite I guess.

Meya - I think they are here to stay. They will be everywhere in short order.
The idea is that the old ads are not producing enough clicks and so this is anew "product" for sale, designed to entice the advertiser to spend online (again).

I'm on a dial up and it took 20 seconds for the ad to load. My old isp was trying big popups back in Nov that froze my browser, and I wrote them a few times. One of the replies was download the newest version of Windows Media Player. (I didn't want to play it, I wanted to stop it)
They're big, they're bad, and they suck.

I get nothing like that on my PC. I don't see it or anything. Of course, I'm runing the very effective and free AdSubtract program.
AdSubtract SE v.1.64

I'm running AdSubtract also. It doesn't stop these ads in the Excite pages we're talking about. It's really dumb how these ads are placed as well. If you click a link into an Excite news story, you get the story with the ad actually inside the text for the story. Sort of like reading a newspaper and having advertisements in each story you try to read.

Because I hate all manner of things that blink and strobe and bounce and mooooooove, I have my browser set to not play animations, and to prompt before allowing any ActiveX scripts are run.
The Excite page asked if I wanted to permit an ActiveX to run, I clicked No, and the page loaded instantly with a gray box where the ad should be.
Sometimes it pays to be paranoid!

Can someone tell me how? Which browser?
I saw another for a car in motion.
It was as big as my head, heading my way, and bearing down!
Please help!

Oh, and another point...
You do SEE them, but instinct is to run away, not click 'em.

VM, in IE, here's how to do those two things:
Turn off ActiveX:
Tools/Internet Options/Security/Custom Level
- Set "Download signed ActiveX controls" to Prompt.
- Set "Download unsigned ActiveX controls" to Disable.
- Set "Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe" to Disable.
- Set "Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins" to Prompt.
- Set "Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting" to Prompt.
Turn off animation:
Tools/Internet Options/Advanced
- scroll down to "Multimedia," uncheck the box marked "Play animations."
Click OK.
That should do it.
As for Netscape, I don't have the latest version and don't know how to do these things there.

Well one thing that AOL does offer, is to say NO Pop ups, in your preferences.
And I just remembered also, on your windows 98 someplace you have the option to STOP alll animation. I hate things moving.
Love dogs, but on one thread those big and little dogs moving back and forth drove me bonkers.
So I have no animation, unless I chose to have it, keep my speakers off, don't wnat to hear sounds that make me jump, not interested in some voice saying you've got mail. And basically I'm saying
I'm an ol stick in the mud about it all.
It's my computer and I will say what the heck is thrown at me...
By the way Very Modern did you feel like you were in a 3 D movie with the car barreling straight at you...
My 2 cents.

Hello, VM
They ads must be working to some extent, most people seem to notice them. So one might consider this new ad banner size a step in the right direction. Might not be a bad thing for the people who want the internet to remain cheap to use! Your story about driving in your underwear was quite entertaining in a jocular sense. Tell us some more!

It looks like the Amazon ads are gone from the Excite pages. I hope they are gone for good. I was looking around for another start page.
I did notice that none of the Excite links were working for me for a couple of hours this morning. I wonder if that had something to do with those ads?
If they would have been regular Pop Ups, I wouldn't mind since AdSubtract seems to kill most of those. These were right in the page itself and AdSubtract didn't stop them. Yuck!
