I sell mostly books on eBay. Not antiquarian books, just plain old ordinary books. Most sell for under $10, a few make it to $15 or $20.
But every once in a while, I stumble upon one of those books. That go higher than your usually winning bids. Yesterday I put up a book that I bought at a library book sale. Ex-library book. Bought it for 50 cents. When I checked it on Bookfinder yesterday I was amazed--only 3 or 4 copies were listed and their prices ranged from $58 to $75! OK, I thought, I'll start the book at a higher beginning bid than usual & listed it at $9.99 (yes, I'm cheap ). I just checked my auctions. It hasn't even been 12 hours yet, and over 40 people have looked at it and it has 9 bids. With 6+ days left in the auction it has already hit $46. Amazing. But...nice

I bought a slew of quilt books end of last yard sale season, a really great score.
Too my shock, a search showed one book in the pile to be valued $3-500 and I did sell it for $400 on Amazon.
A book on knitting this was. In a million years I would have never guessed.

Thats what it is all about makes us want to come back to sell more when we get that sinful price for something we found for 50 cents. Congratulations bunnicula

Apparently I was rude. No pun.
Sorry bunnicula.
It was a drive by and I did not mean to overshadow your good fortune. I read about your book and thought of mine.
I almost hurts to be here these days.

VeryModern: You weren't rude at all! Where'd you get that idea? I love to hear stories like yours! I've only had a couple of items go as high as yours in 2 1/2 years of selling, so you give me hope
BTW, in the hour & a half since my first post (I just got back from the post office), my book has gone up to $56 and 77 hits (I average 5-10 hits per auction).
edited for sloppiness.

Whoa! This book had gone up to $66+ this weekend. Just came home on my dinner break and checked my auctions... this auction has shot up to $127.50! I'm going to have to clean Dr. Pepper off my key board & my dogs are just settling down after the high-pitched yelp I gave interrupted *their* dinners...

Bunnicula - Congratulations on how well your auction is doing. I'm very happy for you.
Might even think about calling some other local libraries to see if they have this book on their 'get-rid-of-list'.(?)
This is what makes ebay so much fun.

HOLY MOLY! Just got home & checked my auctions. This one is now at $152.50!!! Are these people insane?!? I keep looking at my description...yep, I *did* say it was an ex-library book, did tell of all the library markings, did mention the fading along the spine of the jacket... But then I look at the number of hits (215--normal for my stuff is 5-10 hits), the number of bidders (21 now!) and the current bid, and I hafta wonder about some people.
Not that I'm complaining, mind you. But the only other time I had something skyrocket unexpectedly like this, I didn't even deposit the buyer's MO until they received the item, told me they liked it, and left positive FB--I kept thinking, surely they'll discover that it's not what they thought it was!! Just doesn't seem real, if you know what I mean.
This auction isn't due to end until Thursday evening, but I just don't believe it could possibly go higher than it has. My nerves just wouldn't take it!

That is so awesome Bunniccula I can't wait to hear how it ends. I had the same thing happen once with a collectible that I picked up at a garage sale for a $1.00 and it went for $510.00. I was scared to death to cash the money order... ROFLMAO - I know the feeling.

Bunni I am watching this thread and enjoying your good fortune....but I do have to ask if it is an ex library book is is a First Edition or a special edition of some kind? That of course can raise the price considerably. If it is illustrated is the artist someone famous?

Zilvy: yes, it is a first edition--but the author is *not* famous. The illustrator is XXX XXXXX, who is fairly well known as a children's book illustrator (any children's librarian would know of him), but by no means is he a "famous" artist.
No, I think the main interest in this book is the subject matter--it's a story about a particular breed of dog. You can usually do pretty well with a dog story or novel, but this is ridiculous! It is true that there haven't been too many storys written that feature this breed, but still...
edited to remove the illustrator's name & save someone unnecessary angst.

I had a childrens book go for $310 once. I was shocked! Bought it for a dollar at a yard sale.

Just been reading all your posts and am gobsmacked - Here I am with 3 First Edition Famous Childrens Books that are dated 1956 and 1957. I've got them sittting in one of my cupboards somewhere!!! I've never thought that maybe they are worth something.
It certainly gives me a lot to think about now.

Ummmm, I sold something, somewhere, to somebody. Maybe it was a good seller, I can't seem to find any acceptable words.
This has turned ridiculous.

I just think the thread should be locked... that's the ruuuuules. If an auction can be identified, all discussion must cease.
Perhaps the bidders should be invited.

I guess I should feel honored as the first thing you did as a new AW member was to make trouble on my thread! I wasn't around yesterday, but the moderator's note seems to indicate that you made more than one post to this thread...thank you for your interest.

Sorry, ma'am.. I didn't mean to cause trouble, simply to point out that the ruuuules was being bent.
If you can simply look up key words in the discussion, search the description, and BINGO! then I thought the thread got locked. Looks like that only happens to some folks around here.

It's a real inspiration to see you
get more that 9.99 for a book! I had lost
interest when first editions in fine condition were selling for 10.00
Fantastic!
