...and a woman and her 7-month old daughter were killed.

A U.S. Embassy official in Lima said only that "a U.S. government tracking aircraft was in the area in support of the Peruvian intercept mission."

Speaking on condition of anonymity, he said U.S. tracking planes routinely pass information to Peruvian authorities about suspicious aircraft in the northern jungle region bordering Colombia and Brazil, a common route for cocaine trafficking.

Peru's air force issued a statement early Saturday confirming that the missionaries' plane was shot down after it was detected at 10:05 a.m. local time by "an air space surveillance and control system" run jointly by Peru and the United States.

"The president expressed his sorrow for the loss of life and expressed his sympathies for the families," Bush spokesman Sean McCormack said.

Another thread on this topic was derailed into a question on the merits of legalizing drugs...so I will post my last comment from
that thread on your topic.

A State Department official said: "For a number of years, the United States has provided assistance to Peru in detecting and monitoring suspect aircraft passing through designated airspace in an effort to stem the flow of illegal drugs. This is a United States government program in which a number of U.S. agencies are involved,
including the State Department,
the Central Intelligence Agency,
the Department of Defense,
the Drug Enforcement Administration and others.

from New York Times

They must be targeting everything in the sky.

Pretty stupid to be flying around in a drug zone looking like a drug smuggler.

How do you "look" like a drug smuggler?

They looked like drug smugglers to the drug enforcement people.

That's an interesting way of looking at it.

I will have to revise that answer.

So, I guess these drug enforcement guys have
permission to shoot at anything that "looks"
like a drug smuggler.

edited to change answer.

I don't think even the government would have the audacity to blame the victims.

Was it mentioned in the article if any other planes have been spotted by the US and shot down. In the old days a red cross on a truck offered some protection, I wonder if
a Holy Cross would be looked on as suspect, too? Also what about registration numbers on the belly of the plane...wouldn't that have helped...maybe even radio contact..
this is a terrible occurrence. I am pretty sure they didn't or couldn't register a flight plan probabaly took off from a private field...

Until it's investigated, you really can't be
sure about anything.

Well, bill gates is belly up, and all missionaries must be drug smugglers, since religion is an opiate for the unwashed masses living in poverty around the world.

Odd about the mention of "Holy Cross" in reference a protection as the first trans pacific flight was made by a plane with that name and they're about to launch a robotic spyplane for an un piloted flight across the Pacific that's called "Holy Cross II".

You can see how all of these occurances are interrelated, I'm sure, especially given that ultimately the plan is to send Holy Cross II on the first robotic flight around the world.

It is interesting that they could not target small craft like that in this country but they help them do it in Peru.

Of course the logical progression is that the smugglers will soon spend some of their huge store of cash to buy some air to air heat seeking missiles and then they will be let alone pretty quickly. How many 20 or 30 million dollar jets will they allow to take a
missile up the tail before they pull back?

I bet you could even shoot one of those shoulder launched ones out a cargo door.
