Accusations of sexual misconduct with students cost
at least 64 Texas high school and middle school
coaches their jobs since December 1996, the
Houston Chronicle reported.
The newspaper's three-month investigation,
published in Sunday's editions, also found 13
instances in which coaches who lost their jobs at
one school because of alleged sexual misconduct
were hired elsewhere. The investigation studied
coaches in various sports at the schools.

This is a problem that is not limited to Texas or to sports.
Sexual misconduct by educators is rampant in schools all over
the country including ivy league colleges and major state universities.
Tenured professors don't loose their jobs
as easily as coaches. That's the only
difference.

How about Mary Kay Laternou(sp?) in Seattle. She not only had an affair with her student but is currently in jail for it and gave birth to two children by him. One when he was 13 and one when he was 16. She, by the way, was a married woman with 4 children of her own.
She is divorced now - and according to the boy plans to marry the 17 year old when she gets out of jail for statutory rape of him.

Or the club - something posse - in Lakewood, CA - boys in high school - mostly athletes that kept track by numbers of their sexual conquests of their peer high school girls. Some ended up in jail also for stat rape and drugs as most girls were under age and some of the guys were over 18.

Of course, these same people when asked about if it was a 30+ year old man getting a 13 year old girl pregnant twice, well, then call out The SWAT Team!
I personally knew of one young man, 13 years old, who was having his first sexual affair with a 22 yeasr old woman who even convinced him to run away from home and move in with her. By the time that she was doe with him in three months and went on to other conquests, that poor kid was so screwed up emotionally and mentally that he woulnd up on hard drugs and booze 24 hours a day. He later killed himself.
So let's all sing Our Song together:
"If it's a Man molesting a youngster,
We cut off his Balls!
If it's a Woman molesting a youngster,
then we concider them LUCKY!"

Oh,my have you touched a raw nerve with me. My daughter was the victim of "sexual misconduct" by her major professor at one the major universities in Houston. She sued the school and they settled out of court. The amount she got was a fraction of what she needed to pay her medical bills and for the councelling she needed to regain her self esteem, let alone pay the legal bills. The professor resigned, but I know he's still active in his profession in the Houston area and I wouldn't be surprised if he is back at this university. The whole legal process was a nightmare. My daughter was victimized all over again by the lawyers for the school and the legal process. I can understand how rape victims are often reluctant to tell and prosecute their attackers. And, to add insult to injury the US Supreme Court has ruled on such issues that protect the schools and faculty, leaving the students with little or no recourse.
I'll get off my soap box now, but this happened three years ago and my daughter is still trying to put her life back together.

Borillar,
I'm not in Oregon. Here in my little neck of the woods (reasonably good-sized city on the East Coast), quite a few of us feel that Mary Kay LeTourneau is a statutory rapist, plain and simple, and deserves the same punishment as a man who behaved in this manner.
All the questions I routinely ask underage girls involved with older guys (in my RL job) apply equally when it's the guy who's underage, and yes, I've also discussed this matter with boys who are involved with adult women.
You'd be amazed at how many kids (of both genders) have told me that I "just don't understand" what it's really all about.
As an aside, it seems that LeTourneau's own father also had some problems with inappropriate conduct toward underage girls. (I believe he lost a job over it, and I wish I could remember where I read that.)
Not an excuse for her behavior, but perhaps another case of apples not falling far from trees?

what timing for this thread!
I was offered a position at a local Private School this week. Phy Ed/ Girls coach!
OT, did you know that in many states, teachers in the Private school system to not need a teaching degree? My BBA and experience qualify me for the job, but (back on topic) I think I'll stay away from the School Sports!
