Is that the timed-release synthetic morphine? I believe the soon to be ex-MrJulesy was on oxycotin (sp?) for six or seven months. It helped with his back problems, but he was in a constantly sedated state. Although he functioned fine, while on it, he wasn't even half as alert as he was pre-opiates.

Media reports are taking the controvery over OxyContin, the painkiller manufacturered by Purdue Pharma LLP, nationwide. Newsweek reported in its April 9, 2001 issue ("How One Town Got Hooked" ), "Oxy has taken hold in other rural Appalachian states and in New England, places where it's tougher to get more familiar street drugs like heroin and crack. The drug's maker, Purdue Pharma, says it is appalled by the widespread abuse of the drug, a form of synthetic morphine. 'When this drug is used properly, it has the potential to save lives. When it's abused, it has the potential to take lives, just like any other strong medication,' says Dr. J. David Haddox, Purdue Pharma's medical director."

Street price is about a buck a mg.
Interesting combination of smilies you got up there, tom.

I would suggest Vicodin, I was just in the hospital for a week, and that is some good stuff I asked to be taken off of it after 3 days, I could see it becoming a problem later, I have small children, it is nice to be alert. I was taking Fiorcet before the hospital stay, and that is also pretty good.

I am hurting most of the time to were I don't want to do things like bring things in from the car. I am taking 4 Ultrams in the morning and it just does not do much more than over the counter stuff.

Right, and Vicodin is almost the same compound with a bunch of Acetominophen tossed in.
The only thing that works long term is China White but it's hard to find doctors outside the VA who'll write scripts for it.
If you are where it's hot you can grow your own poppy and boil it to skim the brown tar that comes up. That's pure opium, and a little chunk of it on the end of a cigarette will make you forget all about pain and see just how beautiful the world around you can be.

But you can't drive a car or work a machine tool right?
Yeah poppy grows terrible in MI - You get a little peanut size bulb instead of golf ball size and if you cut the bulb almost nothing comes out.

I took Oxycontin for about two years so I have a lot of experience with the medication. Having an extrememly painful disease that was misdiagnosed for years, I was pretty much reduced to laying around on the couch whining full time. When I finally got referred to a pain clinic and was prescribed Oxycontin, it was like getting my life back.
Yes, there are some side effects that happen for almost everyone...constipation - and that's one that will continue and have to be dealt with. But the stuff that KRS mentioned, some of it will go away after a few days (dizziness, lightheadedness, and the like). The other side effects by no means effect everyone. If you read the insert that comes with medications, they give info on what side effects occured when they did testing, so you'll know how likely they are to occur. People react differently to different drugs, it's that simple.
This current controversy about Oxycontin has chronic pain patients pretty uneasy. I keep reading news stories where politicians want to ban the drug. Apparently the stuff is addictive if you don't have a real pain problem...the thing is that it isn't if you do. Studies are coming up with numbers like less than a 1% addiction rate for people with chronic pain. Taken long enough, yes, tolerance and dependence will occur. Huge differnece between those things though. I think it's cruel to suggest taking away this medication from people with a legitimate need for it, because of abuse by folks who don't need it.
Realize that the folks abusing it are using it in a fashion not intended. It's a time-release drug, and they are crushing it to release all of the drug at once. Plus it varies in strength, from 10mg all the way to 160mg - huge range there. This drug isn't killing people - these people are misusing it and killing themselves in the process.
Not everyone can just switch to something else. There are few time release narcotics right now (at least two more should be introduced in the next year). There's a time-release morphine...I couldn't do that one because it gave me horrible stomach cramps and trading one pain for another seemed like a lousy deal. Yeah, people could switch back to the non-time release drugs but you have to take them SO often. Most doctors will only prescribe so many a day..not enough to cover how many hours there are in a day and they don't last very long. Percocets work for less than four hours - most doctors I've dealt with want you to "make them last" for six. When one is in excruciating pain, it's damned difficult to do. And for people with unrelenting chronic pain, the current thinking is that it's better to keep people on a round the clock schedule rather than PRN (as neeeded)...come on, when you have 24 hour a day pain, you always need it!
tomwiii: if you do experience side effects, call your doctor and tell them which ones you have...ask if they are ones likely to go away after a few days. I hope get your life
back - I sure did! I went from laying around on the couch WHINING all the time, to being able to get off my butt and do stuff again. I was able to go to my kids' schools and volunteer for several hours a day, cook dinner again, and start a small business. I no longer take Oxycontin..switched to Fentanyl patches (which some people hate, others of us get along fine with). Anyway, good luck with it!
Julesy: seems odd that your soon-to-be-ex was looped the whole time. My experience was that any Euphoria felt at first or with successive dosage increases, maybe lasted a few days and then I didn't feel at all looped. I felt normal.
Gravid: I drive. I even use my kitchen blender (something I was not allowed to do while pregnant). My understanding is that unless one is on too high of a dose, that the initial spacey feeling goes away pretty quickly. I sure don't feel it...I am perfectly alert. There is no way I would drive if I felt like I wasn't.

I'm glad I had my e-mail on so that I didn't miss the part KRS edited out:
"and may I say, ARGH that I find it very heartening to hear that you have been able to advance from laying around on the couch WHINING all the time, to being able to get off my butt and do it here."
Gee, I didn't realize I was whining. Actually, I'm quite sure that was not my intent. I was trying to answer the question that the original poster asked. I was trying to be helpful, and for that I refuse to feel badly.
I actually don't spend much time in the RT and have no clue what thread KRS is referring to.
Tomwiii: You're welcome...hope this works out for you!

Gee, so happy that you're happy! But unfortunately for your hopes I was not attempting to hide anything by editing away that portion of my post; I did so in a misplaced moment of courtesy to you. The phrase was meant to be a test of the apparently updated policy here concerning such things, and I left it long enough to see that there would not be a blue reaction.
