I bought a new tv about a year ago. Once in a while it turns off by itself. It is not being programmed to turn off, and it has happened about three times. It just goes off. It just happened again and there is no one else home but me and I am on the computer in a different room. The funny thing is the tv I had before this done the same thing. Has anyone else had this happen or know what causes this?

Maybe a neighbour has a remote set to the same frequency as your shut off. Does anyone next to you have a garage door opener?
Have you tried a different outlet?
Do you have mice?
What do you think it is??

I read somewhere that this will happen when spontaneous combustion is imminent. I think the TV can somehow sense it, what with technology and all.

Double check the programming and make sure no one programmed it to shut off after X hours.
If it's not that, um... well..., do dishes move by themselves at your house?
Have you eaten any mushrooms not easily identified in a cookbook?
Just kidding - good luck!

Well when I had the other tv we lived in another house. And it done the same thing. Spontaneous combustion? Do we have mice? I don't know. Mice would do that? Dishes that move by themselves? No none of that.
I have no idea what is causing it.

I was watching my tv one night, and a show about the occult came on. I was tired so I decided to go off to bed. Just as they started saying something about Satan, I hit the off button and put the remote down. Do you know that danged tv turned itself back on????
I reached over and pushed the actual button and tottered quickly out of the room!
Maybe Sideslam and I should cross our TVs?

This is weird. My TV turned itself of about 20 minutes ago too! I'm not kidding.

Maybe these are "smart" TVs and they know when the program being aired isn't worth watching, so they shut themselves off...not so much as to protect you from lousy programing, but because they just don't like it either! Hmmm, TV sets with dignity...refusing to show garbage...what a novel concept!

Under the category of "related but utterly useless information": That happens with much older TVs because the remotes used ultrasonic signals rather than infrared -- you could change channels by jingling your keys right.
I thought you could avoid SHC by not watching the zic-zac blipverts. (Max Headroom non-fans are encouraged to disregard that.)

The "instant on" features in newer televisions (and stereos)are no different from your computer and are sensitive to slight power surges. You plug your computer into a surge protector. It's my understanding that with TV's it's a safety feature that shuts it down when a slight surge occurs. Yours is probably over sensitive, but it does prevent blowing the electronics.

I would definately report this to unsolved mysteries or the show "sightings". Im sure they would be able to help you.Sometimes a spirit will do this when they want to annoy you, probaly someone that use to live in your house.I read something like this in the enquier.

Sideslam We've got a 68cm Fujitsu t.v. and had this problem too. Finally took it in to get fixed, they said that "the whatever it was" had died and ended up costing us $190.00 to get fixed. Well, same thing happened again 12 months later, turns itself off regularly and now won't even turn on manually. Time to go to the repair shop once again. Maybe cheaper for us to buy another T.V.

Sylvia Browne says that spirits love to play with electrical appliances. I think it's a spirit trying to get your attention.

This happened to me too. I took it to the shop and there was a switch that needed to be replaced. Cost me $90 for the repair on a 19" TV. It only lasted one year (just like Kazanne). What is wierd is that when it switches off you have to push the off button and then on again to get it to work. After awhile it takes ALOT of turning "off-on" to get it to turn back on. I donated it to Goodwill, wasn't worth it to pay for another repair...

I definitely wouldn't spend much over $100 to have a TV fixed, unless it was a very expensive TV. We got a 25 inch Sanyo at Walmart on sale last Christmas for about $179.00. No, it's not the best you can buy, but it's OK. I think they are all pretty much the same in the $200-$400 price range anyway.
By the way, it seems it was a power surge or something like that. We had to reprogram the TV and VCR after it turned itself off.

Buy a Zenith. I still have one I bought 18 years ago, and it still works fine. Have bought two more Zeniths since that time, and they all are still working and have never been to the shop.
