Hi all...Went to the PO this morning to mail a few pkgs...I always use my debit card attached to my checking account that is used for all Ebay transactions. The postman told me that he heard from another customer that the banks are now charging .50 cents every time you use your debit card. I called my bank, and sure enough they are! Everytime you use it anywhere like Walmart, drug store, grocery store, no matter; you will be charged .50 cents UNLESS you use it as a CREDIT card instead of a debit card. Hope this makes sense. Oh and I found out that it is just not my bank....there are many. Ok guys, now IF this is old news, don't jump on me Paleeeeeeeze! I checked into my past reports and I was not charged.
Edited due to senior moment! (ie: brain fart!)

This is the first I've heard of it too. I use my debit card everywhere, but I always use it as a CREDIT card because I don't like to mess around with the PIN numbers all the time.

EG....then this charge will not apply to you. I do think there are ppl. that don't realize that you can do this: use it as a credit card instead of debit. I always just found it easier for me to just swipe it and punch the # in instead of having wait and sign the slip. I am very happy to sign now lol.

My bank also charges if I use my PIN number when paying via my Debit card. We have everyone ring the sale as a Credit Card sale and then there is no charge.

Banks do have to notify via written notification when they make changes to their fee structures. It is important to always read completely anything that your bank sends you. I happened to be at the bank helping my son set up his checking account in January and the person that helped us told me about the new charges. I might have missed the notice had I not known to watch for it.

Hi Meya.....You are right; it is very important to read the notices, but I really think most of us don't. The reason I started this thread is that (for me and my bank) this is a new thing. No doubt I was sent a notice..guilty as charged. But, as you said, if you had not been with your son you might not have known. If I had not gone to the PO this morning and THAT postman had not been there to tell me, then I would not have known. I looked back on my statements and I have not been charged for this before. I will look at my new one when it gets here. Perhaps this is something that started the first of the year for some; but for me this is new.

I don't know how your bank does it, but notices sent out by my bank are on check sized pieces of paper with very small print. They are usually included along with the monthly statements, and many times there are advertisements as well. It is super easy to toss them without even noticing them. Sometimes the wording is confusing as well, so it is very easy to miss something important.

Thanks for the heads up Nanastuff...my husband uses his bank card as a debit card all the time...he also kinda lax about reading notices or balancing his check book "exactly"! Been known to here him say...
close enough for Gov't work...well if they are charging everytime he uses it, he better start writing checks or carrying cash.
