The past three days the high temperature has been 88 to 90 degrees. My air conditioner is a name brand, 10,500 BTU (more than enough for my apartment), digital display (using the keypad you can set the temp you want) and it is built into a window.
This afternoon I had the thermostat set at 71 degrees and I was comfy. Then I started to get cold. I notice the compressor seems to be running all the time, it should cycle on and off. I turn the thermostat up to 86 degrees, compressor keeps running. I'm beginning to think I may have a problem.
OK, I figure I'll show this machine who is boss! I turn it off. The compressor keeps running. Confusion, Disbelief, this has never happened before. I unplug it, compressor stops running, victory at last.
Now what to do? I call the appliance store where I bought it (they delivered it and built it into the window). They say bring the air conditioner to them. I say it can't be done. They say a service call will be $60.00 (they are 3 blocks away). I ask what do I get for the $60.00. They say an estimate of what it will cost to fix it. $60.00 for an estimate and then they can't come until Tuesday. I told them I would call back.
Maybe I can fix it myself, what the heck, it's already broke so how can I hurt it. I plug it back in, compressor starts running and it is still turned off.
Time for my secret weapon. I hit it with a golf club. Compressor stopped. I turned it back on and it has been running fine for the past 4 hours. I fixed it...

More than likely the electrical points for the compressor voltage were stuck, and you made just the right amount of club swing contact to free them. What size iron was it? If it happens to me, want to make sure I use the right size.
