Since we're next door neighbors to Mexico here in Arizona, we have a lot of Cinco de Mayo celebrations here. I saw yesterday that they had the first one at the White House. (I was like, huh? Then I remembered George W. was from Texas, another Mexican neighbor )

Here's a link to explain a little bit about the holiday: http://www.worldbook.com/fun/cinco/html/cinco.htm

Have you ever celebrated this holiday? Do you have any fond memories of it?

My fond memory was my then boyfriend, now husband, and I happened upon a big celebration at a park one night after I picked him up at work. At first we didn't even realize what day it was. Duh! They were having a drawing for 2 round trip tickets to Mexico City and was part of the entry fee. I filled mine out and put it in the box. He didn't want to. I said it's free, what do you have to lose? We also bought one our first things for our future home that night. You know those wool blankets that are usually striped and always brightly colored? We still have it and finally got it to smell right, LOL! (Must have been the dye.)

So we ate, partied, listened to the music and went home. A couple weeks later the airline calls to tell him he'd won the drawing for the tickets! We were in disbelief until they actually arrived. We ended up going for a week and did a lot, but there was still so much to see! That was our first real trip together and boy was it an experience. But we've always wanted to go back, especially with some money because shopping there is very cheap. Now it looks like we have a trip to Mazatlan coming, woohoo!

Few know that Hellman's mayonaise was first imported from England. Fewer still know that a large shipment was sent on the Titanic, and after New York the Titanic's next port of call was Mexico. When the shipment of mayonaise never arrived the paper reported of "El Sinko de Mayo" and urban legends have since turned it into a Mexican independence holiday.
