April 2001 Bushisms

"The Senate needs to leave enough money in the proposed budget to not only reduce all marginal rates, but to eliminate the death tax, so that people who build up assets are able to transfer them from one generation to the next, regardless of a person's race."—Washington, D.C., April 5, 2001

"This administration is doing everything we can to end the stalemate in an efficient way. We're making the right decisions to bring the solution to an end."—Washington, D.C., April 10, 2001

I think we're making progress. We understand where the power of this country lay. It lays in the hearts and souls of Americans. It must lay in our pocketbooks. It lays in the willingness for people to work hard. But as importantly, it lays in the fact that we've got citizens from all walks of life, all political parties, that are willing to say, I want to love my neighbor. I want to make somebody's life just a little bit better."—Concord Middle School, Concord, N.C., April 11, 2001

"It is time to set aside the old partisan bickering and finger-pointing and name-calling that comes from freeing parents to make different choices for their children."—Remarks on "parental empowerment in education," Washington, D.C., April 12, 2001 (Thanks to J.R. Taylor.)

"We must have the attitude that every child in America—regardless of where they're raised or how they're born—can learn."—New Britain, Conn., April 18, 2001 (Thanks to Eric Beerbohm.)

"Neither in French nor in English nor in Mexican."—Declining to answer reporters' questions at the Summit of the Americas, Quebec City, Canada, April 21, 2001

"It's very important for folks to understand that when there's more trade, there's more commerce."—Quebec City, Canada, April 21, 2001

"First, we would not accept a treaty that would not have been ratified, nor a treaty that I thought made sense for the country."—On the Kyoto accord in an interview with the Washington Post, April 24, 2001

"Whatever it took to help Taiwan defend theirself."—On how far we'd be willing to go to defend Taiwan, Good Morning America, April 25, 2001

No, everyone doesn't love them (nor does everyone love Raymond, to dispel another myth). Some "love" the proliferation of Bush threads here in RT even less.

My favorite Bushism was quipped three days before the election and Bush was in Florida giving a speech at a retirement community. He said: " ... it's a terrbile thing when elderly people have to make a choice between buying medicine and drugs."

Tonight onm PBS, saw two thingies which had me in stitches:

Regarding the Budget, bush asked" IS our CHILDREN not entitled to better education?"...To which a Democrat Senator replied, tongue in cheek "Well, according to your budget, NO, THEY IS not....

Then, the explanation as to why the voting on passing the new budget was so delayed, a republican dude said: "Well, there was a paper-jam in the printer, and two pages were missing; but we CATCHED it".....

Bravo to this new administration: at least, they are ALL in-articulate....No-one out-shining the other...How very democratic.....

And these are the people who are going to put America back on the right track...

Well, Shosh, you need only to see how similar these politicians are to the people who voted them into office.

>>SIGH<< I sure miss that Rhodes Scholar that we had in office recently.

Borillar- I miss Clinton too. I think we have another Jimmy Carter in office now. Bush has sold people on his "morality", but couldn't lead himself out of a parking lot. While it is still early for Bush, me thinks the economy will make him a one-termer.

Well, I am hoping that the moron might get to fulfill only 1/2 term... Then, he can spend more time taking care of his daughters, so they no longer get picked up on DUI's ..Here is a thought: they could enter rehab together....

Shosh

I don't think that they were picked up on
DUI's...I may be wrong about that, but I
believe that it was only a matter of alcohol
possession.(drinking a beer)

In any event, I would focus on Bush...not
the daughters. In my opinion, they should
not be fair game.

It does amaze me how Clinton stays in the news much more than the fast fade most presidents do. If Bush were INTERESTING I doubt that that would be true.

Bunnicula - You should be able to print it on a transfer paper and iron it on a t-shirt. It is pretty easy - even I have done it without burning myself or the shirt.

gravid,

"iron it on a t-shirt. It is pretty easy - even I have done it without burning myself or the shirt"

Do you mean that you iron the transfer on while wearing the shirt?

"I see that our very own bush took some heat from his OWN party, about the California situation."Shosh

The California situation is a result of poor choices by the State of California - not by anything Bush did.

Anyone that has a even a minimal understanding of economics should realize that something along the lines of high gas prices don't come as a result of poor choices made by The President 2 or 3 months ago. These things take time, and if anyone remembers last summer, they should also remember the gas prices last summer. This situation did not start when Bush took office, but is the result of a non-existent energy program by the prior administration.

I'm also curios how some can complain about gas prices in one breath, and complain about drilling for oil in the Arctic in the next breath.

Without going into a detailed explanation of how the law supply and demand works, I'll just point out that in short, when demand exceeds supply, prices will rise. In order to make prices fall, the supply needs to be increased. How else is the supply to be increased if not by drilling? If against drilling, then do not complain about the high energy costs. Don't blame a guy thats been President for 4 months now for a situation that takes considerable time to develop, especially since we all saw the onset of this last year. Anyone who thought it would just go away was deluding themselves. Anyone who wants it to just go away, but cries when the Arctic spotted owl is displaced from its pristine wildernesss home due to the need to drill for oil has alot of nerve. That damn owl, or the Pickachu Eskimos aren't going to put gas in your car or heat your home. If you're not so selfish, then at least be a true environmentalist, and use alternative energy sources like the heat generated from cow-dung, or learn how to run your car on banana peels and brocolli shoots like I do.

We could gain some serious relief from gas prices if the government tax on every gallon of gas weren't so high, but then that would be lowering taxes, and somebody would claim that that is unfair to the poor folks that can't afford a car. "It's only benefitting the rich!" would be the cries. "Other government programs are sure to suffer!" or "Bush is only for big business!"

In the end it comes down to this. Everyone that supported the prior administration and their poor energy programs, despite the warning signs, made your bed.

Now lie in it.

jlpiece, that was well-written again -- almost intimidating! Are you SURE that you didn't have your roommate write that?

While I haven't been looking closely into all of the causes of the California thing, it seems clear that a few facts as to the cause stand out:

+ Lessening investments in renewable resources to create electricity - seems some party in the California legislature has kept a lid on Windmills, Solar Power, etc. as best they could.

+ As soon as Deregulation went into effect and the power companies were in private hands, 5 Billion Dollars of equity were transfered out of the State of California to other power companies, thereby leaving shells behind to scream about needing to declare bankruptsy. The governor of California seems to have completely ignored this fact when he paid Taxpayer's money to refill their coffers. If only I had no sense of shame, I'd be a Republican too! (yes, the jerk is a Democrat, so what?)

+ Bush has announced his clever "Hands-Off" approach to resolving this problem! Pretty clever, huh?

Other than that, I haven't been paying attention. Up here in Oregon, its good news to me. That's because every year we waste tens of Billions of dollars trying to save the stupid salmon in the Columbia river, the border for Washington and Oregon. In the meantime, schools go underfunded, the homeless are found frozen to death in the cold, wet outside, etc. Now, since the Endangered Species Act takes prescedence, farmers in Eastern Washington and Oregon can't have the water that they need to irrigate their crops, because the salmon need it! I can imagine quite a few farmers getting really angry enough to make sure that the salmon go extinct in the Columbia this year and good riddance!

p.s. that won't stop salmon from being caught and sold - it's all done in the Lower Columbia by the ocean. And there are LOTS of small streams and minor rivers that the existing salmon can go spawn at -- it just won't be upriver.
