My cat (who really thinks he's a kitten at 2 years old) sleeps on his BACK!!!

How weird is that? Or is it normal?

In really warm weather my Maine Coon Cat, sleeps on his back with his front paws over his head and his entire belly exposed to the breezes. When it is only slightly warm he curls his front paws on his chest, rather like an otter. Course he does a lot of strange things but I think this is sort of normal in a comfortable environment. I don't think they do this if they are not completely trusting of their surroundings.

That's actually quite comforting to know. Our little guy was trapped under a shed in sub zero weather when he was a kitten. His brother died and for quite a long time he was very very skittish whenever there was something he wasn't familiar with around. Guess he's finally gotten used to us after 1-1/2 years.

I have one cat who loves to lie on his back with his furry little belly exposed. He especially likes to do that on the kitchen floor, or next to the dining room table, or in the hallway when I come home from work.

His brother lies on his back and naps while watching TV with Daddy.

RainyBear, your cats look so comfortable!

My mother's black and white cat used to sleep on his back most of the time. My most skittish cat frequently sleeps on his back, but he's usually where the cushion joins the back of the chair so he's protected as well.

I finally got it! Thanx Joice. I'm embarassed to say I design websites for a living and even I couldn't figure out how Auction Watch worked! I even checked the source code out and that didn't even help. Sorry for all the confusion, but at least ya'll get to see my cute little kitty. The photo's not the best, my hubby is the photographer in my family, as if you couldn't tell that!

Oh, Boots is a cutie! It looks like he gets the same shape my kitty does when lying flat on his back... like a pear with feet and a tail.

Yep - that's Boots! Now I have a new name to call him - Pear. I like it. He's such a loveable guy too, I should have named him Bear as in cuddly, then Pear would have really worked well.

I am so pleased that you asked Kraftdinner it just so happens I do have a picture of him...unfortunately not lying on his back but sitting up and looking gorgeous.

flynnTigger has many names too, tiggerbe, tiggaboo, dingbat-baby. He reaches in his dish with his left paw and brings the food to his mouth, he even does this with water and milk and makes a royal mess...that's when he becomes dingbat-baby.

Boots does that too - with the paw thing! How weird is that. When he does that I call him goofball then.

Sooooooo many names, so little time.

Here's a picture of my hubby's cat, I don't like her so much, she's kind of a snob! Her name is Snowflake. I think she should have been called just plain 'ole Flake if you ask me. Sure hope I get this one right on the first try!

Here's Missy, sleeping on my desk. She can be found sleeping like this at just about any moment right in front of my computer! (And just so happens to be the one place I spend most of my time!)

I wish I had some good pics of the critters who live here with us!

We have a big old cat that we are pretty sure is a Maine Coon...he wandered into our world a few years back as a stray. Big boy - well over twenty pounds, white with gray tail and ears. Looks a bit like Snowflake up there but with dirt on him! LOL! He is the most affectionate male cat I have ever known. Shares my pillow at night. All night. All twenty plus pounds of him. With a front paw resting on my cheek. He spent today (which was record breaking hot up here at 94 degrees) on the front porch, on his back. Our little calico female wanted to snuggle with him, and he'd let her get settled in and then he'd move about a foot away, and roll on his back again.

I was just kidding. This was someone's "pet" until it was taken away. It's actually a picture taken at the wildlife refugee in Florida. My son's father-in-law volunteers there to help take care of the animals. This leopard was skin and bones when they took it away form the owner. As you can see, he is healthy now, and very beautiful. A magnificent animal. Surprisingly, very friendly and tame. Just don't try to touch it's food.

Whew!

I was trying to be diplomatic in that post, I'm so glad that noone has that cat for a pet. They belong in the wild, not caged up! But that's a whole 'nother thread, isn't it!

I personally think cats are one of nature's most beautiful and graceful creatures. They are so much fun to watch.

I am such a softy when it comes to kitties.
This is one handsome bunch of felines. GodzillaYou didn't tell us the name of the gorgeous Puddy that is posing for animal crackers! That has to be the neatest pose ever."Ready for my close up Mr. DeMille"
ExecutiveGirl your Missy really needs to be near you and of course she is performing an invaluable service at the same time. I mean how many have a purring paperweight? RainyBear I love Kadu and Kazu what dear kitties you have, and loving too, just great when you get them as kitties they relate so well to good care.
Margot I used to have a kitty that looked like Duke, his name was Cricket! He used to prop himself up in the corner of the couch, back to the arm and looked like a little old man watching TV. He got his name because of the chirping noise he always made, sort of like he was talking to himself.

You know, I've been thinking about this for a couple of days. How many out of our 6 cats do that? One with regularity, and he's a Maine Coon too who's name is Buddy. A couple others do it here and there too. I am loving these pics though!

Zilvy - you're right, cats do so well when raised from kittens. I'd never had kittens before but it has been so wonderful to watch them turn into great cats!

Kazu is at the vet's right now and has been there for two days. They're waiting for him to pee so they can get a sample to tell if he has a urinary infection -- and he's been holding it in all this time! I miss him at home. I wish he'd just "go" and get it over with!

RainyBear, has he been straining to urinate? If they need a urine sample I am surprised that they don't just apply a little pressure to his bladder to get a sample? Anyway, you may have to start feeding him a low ash diet. Your vet will advise, he is an indoor kitty, right? Darn it is always so scary when they have physical problems, they can't tell you where they hurt, and they hide their problems really well, too. Please let us know what is happening.

I'm not sure whether he's been straining to urinate or not, but the initial problem was that he started peeing on the couch with great regularity. My husband suggested that it might indicate a urinary infection and that we should take him to the vet... and there he remains, poor kitty. I had no idea he'd have to be there this long or I would have just let him pee on the couch again and scooped it up in a cup (it's leather, so it pools).

He's probably just being a bad kitty and is physically fine -- I hope. I feel so bad leaving him there all this time! The vet says she's seen cats hold it for three days or more... but I agree, they should just give him a squeeze or something!

2:08 pm -- Kazu has peed for the vet and is coming home with a clean bill of health. He was just being a bad kitty so now we just need to figure out how to break him of that nasty habit.

Fabreze is a product on the market that is good for eliminating odor from many fabrics...you might want to check and make sure that it is OK for use on leather.
This comes in a plastic spray bottle, we use
when there has been an accident, throw up or whatever...to eliminate the odor to the cat and for our own nose.

Is the couch new? Wonder if there is odor from something else that triggers him to do that. Usually this kind of behavior is caused by illness, or a radical change in their environment (new pet, new baby etc)
Whooo hooo I am a Cat Psychologist!! Hugs to you and your furry ones, good luck with this problem.
