Safety Town is a place in Eisenhower Park where teachers take their kids to teach them about safety. Far Rockaway is in Queens and to many it is not thought of as Long Island although it is, as well as Brooklyn.

I guess Eisenhower Park is after my time there. I left in the mid-70's. Never heard of OBI either, so I guess that's a really young person's club or whatever.
Far Rockaway was close enough to Nassau County be considered Long Island during the time we went. It was only a fifteen minute drive. Further up, it was considered Queens. (It kind of split somewhere along the line)
Brooklyn is not Long Island at all. Guess that was meant as a joke right?
No one mentioned the Hamptons. What a great place to rent a house for the summer.
Nassau Community College in the old barracks.
Popular Merchandise, one of the oldest catalog companys and largest employers in Lynbrook in the 1950's. (Did you mean to say this instead of Brooklyn?)
Newsday, Long Island News Press competing with each other. Newspaper delivery boys throwing the paper just beyond your reach on the walk.
Mailmen walking their route! Actually coming up to the house to put mail in your box, even talking to the homeowner!

jamesoblivion,
Brooklyn and Queens are part of Long Island, geography wise, but, they are part of NY City, government wise.
Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, Bronx and Staten Island make up the 5 boroughs.
OBI has been around since at least the early 70's. Originally there were 3 OBI's (Oak Beach Inn) OBI East (Hamptons), OBI West ( I believe was either Oceanside or Long Beach) and OBI South(Captree area) Only one remaining is OBI South if it hasn't closed in the last 2 or 3 years.
Eisenhower Park has been in existance since the 1940's as Salisbury Park and was re-named around 1970 as Eisenhower Park. It's located in Hempstead.

Thursday night's in Roslyn...
Raffles, My Father's Place, US Blues...
I was at US Blues one night when a guy with funky high tops got up on the stage and started toolin around on the Piano. None other than the Piano Man himself, Billy Joel!
Seeing Jackie (922-WINE) Martling at Governor's (now an ex-Stern man)
Imus in the morning ("Getting back the best DJ that was ever fired"
Concerts at Shea Stadium (or hangin in the lot if it was sold out!)
Ron Dugay
(remember those Ooh-La-La Sasson commercials?)

Well, no wonder I didn't know what OBI is/was!! We never hung out in bars (or clubs as some people called them).
Salisbury Park, hmmmmmm .. never set foot in Hempstead. That was the place we were told to stay away from. Too many gangs LOL! No wonder they made it a safety park!
I was well past the teen years when I left LI and basically I was too busy commuting to the "city" to work and play.
Hi jamesoblivion! I've never heard of Brooklyn being part of LI, it just looks like that on maps. Matter of fact, people used to think East New York was part of NYC, but it's part of Brooklyn. However, there are some not to be reckoned with and far be it for me to argue with experts on the matter. I was born in the Bronx many years ago (too many) and moved to LI when I was three. I lived there til I was 27 and escaped. I hear it's just about destroyed now.
edited to say: I guess the folks who owned the OBI got tired of the Long Island crowd too (way too snoopy for them-LOL) and moved to the Florida Keys.. see?

"Warm Beer, Lousy Food"
Remember those tee shirts?
Jones Beach...
West End 15...too many memories!
Remember those hotties selling Frozen Snickers Bars from a cooler?

Actually, Bob got tired of the busy bodies trying to tell him how to run his business.
And I'm sure the parents considering spending around 10k a year to educate their children at Hofstra University will be glad to hear the place is over run with gangs!
Those gang bangers must have some bucks, considering the average price of a house in Hempstead is around 200K
posted on June 21, 2001 04:52:17 PM
toollady- only a VERY small area of Hempstead has $200K houses. BTW- i once had a practical joke played on me by my college roommate. i sang in some rock bands and he told me that there was a band(the Hassels) at Whiskey Red's in Garden City that needed a lead singer. i went, only to be told by their lead singer, Billy Joel, that the position was filled.
Whiskey Red's
This thread is really bringing back some great memories!
My sister does real estate and she had told me about the housing prices in Hempstead. She may have been talking about Hempstead proper and not included West Hempstead and North Hempstead. Said that was the average price now a days.
But then again, the housing market is insane on the Island anyway!

stusi, absolutely correct about a small portion of Hempstead. My sister went to Hofstra University when it was still "young." When I left Hempstead wasn't the same. If you remember Green Acres, it's changed for the worse. Sure you can still buy a $200,000 home there, but as you said only in a very small area. Let's not forget there are gangs all over, a lot of rich kids belong to gangs.
I went to college on Sutton Place in Manhattan, very expensive homes and apartments, very expensive private college. Would I live there? No, I was glad to get out of the neighborhood at dark.
A "gang banger" has a totally different meaning than a gang member. I'm sure if anyone really lived in N.Y. they would know what gang banger meant.
Of course, I don't know anything, being a native New Yorker. Stusi, is Nathans still there?

Tsk Tsk! You kids! Here's an oldtimer from Mepham High who always went to the LEFT side of the West BathHouse at Jones Beach. The right side was reserved for Freeport High!
And NOBODY goes east after Memorial Day until AFTER Labor Day! Too many crazy Manhattanites!
Ah! Long Island in the summer! Wait! I have to take off another deer tick! And they just ate all my hostas! And Fire Island across the Bay on our boat, trying not to cross over the ferry's wake!!

mtnmama- having left L.I. myself for sunny Florida a few years ago, i can only assume that Nathan's is still in Oceanside. does anyone remember the Lemon Ice King of Corona?
Never heard of the Lemon Ice King, but I remember Bungalow Bar and Good Humor Ice Cream trucks twice a day in the summer. Also, Wetson's burgers, White Castle (10 for a buck)and real candy stores.
I lived in sunny (south) Florida for a number of years. I hear it's almost too hot there now.

Ok, talking bout Hempstead, anyone remember Terrace Avenue???....BTW, Eisenhower/Salisbury Park is in East Meadow, border by Hempstead Tpke, Merrick Ave and Old Country Rd.
zoomin, US Blues was MY exclusive hangout for about a year. Unfortunately, Billy Joel wasn't there at that time!!!
Mtnmama:
Bungalow Bar
Tastes like tar
Spit it out
It goes so far!!
Anyone remember Putt Putt Golf, Adverntureland, the Long Island Arena & the ORIGINAL Long Island Ducks (the Hockey team!)??????

Rancher, Thanks! Now I recall Salisbury Park. East Meadow, not Hempstead. LOL! I remember the name Terrace Ave, but as I said, never went into Hempstead to "play."
I guess we weren't really choosy as kids when that Bungalow Bar man came around. As we got a little older though, Good Humor had better looking drivers, so ...
I used to hang out Brian Hyland (Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini.) I swear after he made some money, he never again took a bath or combed his hair! He said his parents took all of his money away and he had none from any of his songs. The last time I saw him was in 1970. I sure hope he did okay for himself after that. He sure had a lot of great songs.

rancher24--The year I left Long Island, I ran a car dealership adjacent to Terrace Avenue. We had a bullet shot into the showroom, the owner was hit in the head with a rock, a suicide off the roof of a Terrace Ave. building, and a double homicide in a house directly in back of the dealership. BTW- how about Judy Ann ice cream, the Village Green, Modell's and Island Trees schools?

Oh but Stusi, how can you say such terrible things about Hempstead? The bullet into the showroom wouldn't be gang related would it? Or how about the double homicide? Sounds an awful lot like drive-by shootings to me. And all in a University town that costs almost 10K a year. (Which is becoming the standard for tuition today) and 200K homes. How can rich people do this?
The universities around Atlanta are certainly not in what we would consider prime/safe areas, yet they cost just as much or more to attend. And there are 200K homes there too. I'm still wondering what tuition and money has to do with gangs... Still wondering why no one explained what a "gang banger" is. LOL!

Lotsa shopping there! I used to love going to Korvettes with my Dad.
Spent my cash at A&S and Miracle Mile, too.
Remember La Crepe?
The Benihana's behind Bonwit Teller had the best lunch special!
(must be time for lunch I keep posting about food!)
And in the evening, about Happy Hour time,
Cocktails at Mushroom's and Salads at Millies Place ring a bell for anyone?
