This is not a "bash" but with the temperment of this room no doubt it will be labeled as such. I just went to BV and got a pop up ad that concerns me:

"This is not a gimmick - Limited Time ONE PENNY promo for new auction site!
Starting bids at one penny with NO minimum required to win the bid.
NEW items added daily!
Bid, buy and post for FREE!
-----bid.com"
(not sure if I'm allowed to post the site name.)

Most sites have a policy not to accept advertisements from competing sites (for obvious reasons). I did visit the site, it has less than 200 listings but that is beside the point...

I have heard pop ups don't have to be clicked to make the host site money. If that is true BV is making money off attempting to refer people to another auction site. If it's not true they are trying to make money off referring users to another auction site. Does this disturb anyone but me?

kasmoon,

In addition to the use of LinkExchange, you may have noticed that your browser was obtaining some of the files from *.flycast.com.

http://www.flycast.com redirects to www.engage.com, which according to Bidville's privacy statement:

This site uses the services of Engage for the serving and/or targeting of ads, promotions and other marketing messages. To do this, Engage collects anonymous data through the use of cookies.

Perhaps Bidville has no control over the content of the pop-up advertisements.

NO I'm not suprised or disturbed by this, im thinking what these small sites need is more promotion advertizeing and promoteing each other is a fairly cost effective way of doing it.

matbe this week or month popup on bidville for a site next week or month popups on another site for bidville.

Share sellers and buyers and get there name in the eyes of some people who wouldnt normally look or have heard about them.

radio and television do this type of advertizeing and it has worked very well for them.

I have noticed that most of the banners are for businesses near me (usually MD's, dentists, lawyers). I don't know how ad makers determine my location. I always thought it was from capturing my IP address.

Pop ups I usually get X'd down before I see what they are but when I saw this one I was shocked. Link exchanges I can understand but it didn't seem fair to me for BV to promote another auction site after making a decision not to promote their own. If they have no control over ad content so be it.

I would say it has nothing to do with desperation at all it has to do with business.

I would think that if the Bidville name would be allowed, that any auction name would be allowed. Let me give you a pop-up ad example. I was browsing auction sites the other evening. I came across a place called Bidbay. I was registering to become a member, and a pop-up ad appeared. I continued on registering, or at least I thought I was. When it was all over, I had joined U-Bid and Bidbay. I thought they were both the same auction site. After I was informed that they were two different sites. I contacted both sites and told them to cancel my membership. So much for pop-up ads. I believe this is a new form of direct unwanted, intrusive advertising. JMHO

has a program called Ad-aware v5.0 that removes flycast and other parasites that write to your registry everytime you boot up. It works great.

Ummmmm, Bidville is responsible for the "parasitic" relationship with Flycast, right? So your use of this program means that Bidville likely derives zero income from your use of the their free auction site? That sure will help Bidville earn some of the income it needs to further improve the auction site, won't it?

Why don't you give the personal jabs a rest dimview. It's getting old. Don't worry I won't run to the Moderator and tell them you attempted to insult me again.

This is just my observation.

I do not use any advertisement killing programs so Bidville earns income via those same advertisements from my use of their auctionsite.

Ironic, isn't it?

I choose to support BidVille in every other way possible. I think this is still a free country, isn't it?

Hey, after playing numerous rounds of Bidville Popup Roulette, I finally got the one about the "other" auctionsite.

Its on-topic for "Other Online Auctions" so here it is:

Thanks for the info everyone.

Dimview, I figured since I was on the other auctions board and it is one of the other auction sites posting the name would be OK. But then I thought because I pasted the "promotional" wording of the ad itself the Moderator would delete it on that ground.

THREAD: ebay pop up ad windows

http://www.auctionwatch.com/mesg/read.html?num=2&thread=395328

How interesting. Sounds like there's a little bit of pop-up roulette going on at GreedBay too. Does a site that charges fees for every little thing really need to subject their paying customers to annoying pop-ups?

cuff,

Please address any issues you have relating to pop-up ads in the Services forum so we are aware if it is a widespread problem.

Thank you,
