As I recall the events of last December, many posters who were members of PayPal, received spam e-mail notification of the opening of AuxPal. Many were excited about the new site. When they went and saw the PayPal reference they ASSUMED that AuxPal was associated with PayPal.

To register with AuxPal, they were asked to key in their PayPal password. They were very upset when they subsequently discovered they had given their password to a company with no association with PayPal. That's when PayPal sent out the e-mails saying that PayPal members should not give out their passwords to third parties.

AuxPal quickly changed the registration requirement of providing a PayPal password.

If I recall correctly, the AuxPal rep hinted at the time that there was more to the story than had been revealed. I guess AuxPal was being careful about what they said because they were thinking of suing.

Yes, I think what happened did hurt AuxPal/Bidville a lot. I know I was wary and stayed away from the site until the last couple of weeks when I've started to read the postings here to try to get a feel as to the recent reputation of the site and those behind it. (I've been debating on whether to do some test listings there in the fall - my type of item doesn't do well in summer so it wouldn't be a fair test to do it now.)

I would like to hear the truth about what happened last December though.

Perhaps now there'll be some particulars being released about the case. We've heard Bidville's side of the story, PayPal's will be heard soon.

It is common, though, for companies to be proposing and discussing joint ventures, some of which do not materialize; it is also common for companies to sign agreements in principle, some of them are terminated; it is also common for companies to sign definitive agreements, some of them are also terminated.

We'll have to wait and see how far down the road this idea really went.

Remember all those Premier and Premier Plus memberships, you know, the money Bidville auction sellers thought would be used for advertising?

I guess we now know what they've been devoted to.

I don't recall ever seeing legal expenses as part of an advertising budget, but stranger things have happened in balance sheets.

A quote from the news story:

BidVille has about 680,000 ongoing auctions, according to a counter on its Web site.... Despite the large number of listings, few auctions on BidVille end with winning bids.

If *this* is advertising, I'd suggest they get another copywriter.

A quote from the news story:

Although it lacks venture backing, NoBidding's BidVille grew quickly after Yahoo decided to begin charging auction fees and eBay's decision to increase its fees.

uh huh

I would like some afternoon rain. It helps to keep the temps down here on the Hurricane Coast.

We need rain badly! We are having days of over 100 and I am having to water the yard. This is a pain in the a** because we do not have automatic sprinklers. So every 20 minutes, I have to go move them. Really cuts down on my listing time! LOL

PRAY FOR RAIN!

deichen ...

A couple of years ago we had a water shortage here. The Mayor issued a proclamation that homeowners could only water their lawns on certain days (even numbers on Mondays and Wednesdays, odd numbers on Tuesdays and Thursdays kind of thing).

It just so happens that our main fire pumps at the hospital were due for their annual flow test around this time. When I test these pumps, I dump about 25,000 gallons of water down the sewer in the space of about 10 minutes.

Needless to say, the Mayor called me at home the night before the test and asked me to postpone it!

This was one time where I was able to violate the fire code with a clear conscience

I just walked outside and it's definately gonna rain. This probably would not be a good time to paint my livingroom, huh?

RB... would you mind taking a look at my open at auctions at BidVille (the ones with bids) and tell me if the bidder looks familiar? Thanks in advance!

On topic:

I never had anything to do with PayPal. They were bought out by XCOM and I knew enough to steer clear due to that association.

RB: Can you recommend a good, reliable ISP? I'm planning to move back next spring. (I haven't lived there for more than 30 years - it will be an adjustment.)

Irene ... it depends on where you plan to settle and how fast you want your service to be.

For years I used a local ISP with a modem (14.4K in the BBS days, then 28.8K and finally 56K). Never had any busy signals or any other problems.

Last year, my sons got the Napster bug and wanted a higher speed connection.

I tried the Rogers cable internet first (the @home service). It was very unreliable and was down more than it was up. From what I am hearing from my internet pals, it still is. Besides, their modem is a huge horkin' ugly looking thing that runs hot.

I am now using a DSL connection and apart from the odd glitch, it seems to be working flawlessly. Plus, it's cheaper as I deleted the 2nd telephone line I was using for my modem ISP.

I have to admit that I am enjoying the high speed also - I can actually download and watch movie trailers now!

Hope this helps ...

deich ... will do ...

Yes, I heard the same thing about the cable service so I'm interested in DSL. Can you give me the name or e-mail it to me (my e-mail address is in my profile)? I've had super service here in Calgary with Cadvision (down maybe for 1/2 hour once a year) and rotten service in Toronto with another ISP before that.

RB,
HUH? deic...will do? About that rain, we just had a passing 5 minute sprinkle and now the sun is out again.

We have water rationing nearly every summer here, usually in August and we can't water except on certain water days. It is a bummer, because I have spent $1,000's on landscaping and will be darned if I am going to let it die.

To stay on topic....I am glad other news sources are picking up on the Paypal story, this means that soon every one will know about Bidville! Hopefully, they will come browse, as the so called inventory warehousing will all be new to them!

And other news sources would be who? And if soon everyone will know about Bidville how's that going to happen now that the single news story is already buried in the archives.

Hopefully,

Wishful thinking might be more accurate?

Yup, IF.

It seems to me that you are the one keeping up with the "other news sources".

"WOW! Look at all the news services that have picked up on the Bidville sues PayPal story ..."

... on the other hand, maybe you didn't say that or maybe I misunderstood what you said. Its so hard for me to keep up with these simple things.

I sorry but I can't see much publicity coming from this non-event. What little publicity that is generated is tainted with quotes like 'few items actually sell on the site'-type comments. I know a lawyer will tell you anything you want to hear to get you to employ him just like a used car salesman will tell you want to hear to move a car off the lot. This matter could easily be dragged out for a very long time which will water down its' press value.
BV is such a nice, quiet auction site with great users that it is a shame much need revenue sources may now have to be diverted into the pockets of greedy laywers.

Hey Cuff ... I see what you mean!!

Did you know that there was a "real" version of one of your die-cast planes up on eBay a few months ago? It was fully airworthy and demilitarized.

Imagine me in my very own MiG

Imagine the look my wife gave me when I asked her if I could place a bid on it

She thought the real P-51 Mustang on eBay was "cuter" than the MiG, but she wouldn't let me place a $900K bid on that one either ...

Guess I'll have to stick with MS Flight Simulator for now.

Thanks for taking a look. Your wife knows that a smaller plane would only lead to a larger plane. She is wise.
Thank Gawd for Bill, huh?

Gotta get some things done! Ya'll have fun!
