Too late, dimview. eBay's lawyers will be suing you for trademark infringement.

Wow - 1300 listings! These guys really are starting from ground zero. Out of curiosity I browsed through their web site. It is really really slick. Looks much more professional than any of the other secondary sites. Pulling in bidders is a completely different ballgame though. I hope they can do it but it looks to be an almost impossible task.

Everyone always thinks it's impossible to draw bidders to an auction site. I totally disagree, this is a free enterprise and if people were in the thinking mode that folks won't ever shop in a new place, well then there would never be a new "store" opening in your local neighborhood right? All good things take time, I am giving Carnaby a chance....all that it really costs me is a little of my time listing.

The bidders will come, and ARE coming even in this early stage of the game.

What other site pays cowbucks to buyers for checking the listings or for placing a bid or posting in the forums? You gotta love those ornery bovines over there at Cornbay, er, Carnaby.

WOW!! Carnaby is starting their first ad campaign tomorrow (Monday, Aug. 6) and it's geared toward bringing buyers to the site!

Just about three weeks ago there weren't even 200 listings and my own made up a huge percentage of that. Currently there are roughly 1700 listings and I wouldn't be surprised to see this grow immensely in the next few days.

In fairness to the efforts of our Test Drive members, we are happy to report that our current listings have increased to over 2,300 items as of 6:30 AM EST on August 6.

I really like the look of the site, and many of my "friends" from another site are there.

The problem for me? Once again I find I am unable to help them grow with listings - I absolutely refuse to get a credit card, bank card, or a bank account and provide that info to them just to prove that "I am what I am and that's all thai I am"

I sincerely hope others are able to get the listings up though ... I'm still allowed to buy without a CC (Duh????)

I think the mandatory credit card is a great plus for the site. If a prospective site user refuses to list their cc info then let them go. Paranoia of cc data is for the irrational or lawbreakers or kiddies without a card. Those types of users can head to some of the free sites that don't care about cc verification.

I agree, but what about those folks who do NOT have a credit card or a bank card and who cannot see the need to get one just so they can list stuff on an auction site?

What about those folks who are fed up with banks and their total lack of service to their customers these day? Seems to me that if a person has a hangup about dealing with banks for ANY reason, it should not affect that person's "right" to sell stuff on an auction site, particularily one that does not require any listing or selling fees.

Buying, which involves a cash outlay would be different ... but selling???

If I were living in the USA, I wouldn't need this piece of plastic as there are other ways I could be "verified". I did offer to send them a scan of my Driver's License though

Carnaby may lose a very small percentage of people that do not want to deal with banks and do not want to acquire a credit card or bank card. Stick to you guns Carnaby and insist on credit card verification for both buyers and sellers.

I didn't know having a credit card would make one more trustworthy than someone without.

hi toollady

I didn't know having a credit card would make one more trustworthy than someone without.

In fact, it doesn't. My son, who is entering 4th year University gets barraged with offers for VISA and MasterCard cards. His friends do as well. For many of them, the lure of the plastic money will get them into a lot of trouble - they don't have any money to pay the bills and many of them have not learned how to NOT spend money that they don't have.

I was recently informed about a prominent site that was hacked. They, too, wanted CC info simply as a means of verifying someone. For an entire weekend, any person who visited the site was greeted by a screen full of member's names and their CC numbers.

Now, even though the owner of the card is protected, and even though the site promises to keep all information confidential, things happen that can cause undo stress.

I wonder why Bidville doesn't require a CC to list? Do they trust everyone or do they realize that a credit card is proof of absolutely nothing?

I understand why Carnaby wants this (it's the flavour of the week), and I hold no animosity towards them for not allowing me and others like me to list there. They are not teling me that I am dishonest or that I cannot be trusted. They are simply telling me that that's how they chose to verify their sellers. They will probably lose potential sellers because of this policy, but probably not enough to make a big difference.

Another question ... does the fact that a seller owns a credit card help in any kind of dispute with a buyer?

Has anyone seen where Carnaby has placed their ads? It is an interesting site- especially with onboard global possibilities.

Credit cards would be an internationally applicable way for verification. As the world shrinks and a global market is realized I think CC IDs will become the norm.

Carnaby VP--I have a very small bet going-- what country are you from? Please don't say Florida , USA!!! LOL!!

Thanks!

You are right, not a native Floridian - but all of us love it here

We are following identify verification technologies very closely, and we believe all other serious auction venues are doing the same.

We have studied many options, but can not find a safer and more economical method than our current practice. Our policy is definitely not meant to be a reflection on a particular applicant's fitness as a trader, it is merely a standard we've decided to apply for the benefit of our community.

Although we recognize it is not a 100% foolproof technology, credit card verificatoin provides the best compromise in terms of performance, accuracy and economy to our users.

There are some exciting developments in the field right now, but none that we consider commercially viable at this time.

Hi Carnaby

Although it hasn't hit your site yet, it will ... and that is the proliferation of illegal bootlegs (videotape, DVD, VCD, CD, computer software, etc.) that will eventually be available for purchase.

I respectfully suggest that you may want to spend a little more effort figuring out a way to identify this type of activity rather than worrying so much about who is buying and selling on your site. I know when I buy something from a "new" seller I have absolutely no idea of who I am sending my money to. Whether or not they have a credit card won't make any difference to me (or you) if I get burned.

I guess what I am trying to say is "Why the emphasis on identity verification?".

JMHO tho ...

Dear R.B.,

We have given a lot of thought an effort to the issues you mention. We are very aware of the activies you describe. That is why from the very start we have instituted an internal safety network we call our "Safety Net".

The issue of providing false identities and "excluding" pertinent information related to a member's registration record is just the tip of the iceberg.

Other areas of concern we actively monitor and investigate include violations related to:

- listing
- selling
- bidding
- innapropriate behavior
- interference with the site's operation

Fortunately, and as with any community, the vast majority of our members trade and socialize in good faith and according to the norm of the society they are helping build.

As you see, our emphasis is not in identity verification, but in ensuring the safety of our .COMmunity.

Noticed some users on Carnaby already have double digit feedback. How??? I haven't had any luck yet but apparently some people have, even before the site starts advertising. Bodes well for the future! Might be another BargainandHaggle type rise.

I have noticed some of the regular chatters ratings have gone from 0 to 4-12 in only 2 weeks of visiting. Very promising indeed.

As far as advertising I believe they have only done banner ads so far. I run banner blocking software so I don't get to see any banners on any site. I love that but would like to hear where Carnaby's banners are. Another aspect of their advertising is they will be giving out free T-shirts and other items at trade shows soon. I would gladly visit any sites that gave me free stuff so that sounds more effective than banners that might be ignored. Once people get to the site I think they would be hooked with the ingenious Cow game which could earn excellent weekly & monthly prizes.

I am very impressed with the site set-up and incentives to check back regularly. Time to get off the fence and start listing!

Proud to say I was one of the first to reach that double digit rating on carnaby (12) I just closed another sucessful auction and with bids on 5 more, I'm a happy camper. Will it get better? I certainly hope so, I've been there a month and the Max Loader has me spoiled rotten. Won a t-shirt and cap too so that's a bonus.

Check it out,you may be suprised
