I like this site! The owner is doing ever thing he can to update and improve it he trys to get everones input to help him. I have made a few sales but things are slow everwhere they just updated some of the categories that help me alot ( If you want new categories just write them) The listings have been picking up and the membership has also went up it has more members then listings so to me that is a red flag. Does anyone else think auctionsaloon will make it or not. Have a nice buying/selling day.

Not as far as I'm concerned.

Their website is one of those that locks you in and won't let you hit the 'Back' button to return to a previously viewed website (which I HATE)....and they put a 'pop-behind' banner on my monitor when I looked at their homepage.

These 'pop-behind' banners may be bringing in big advertising $$ for websites, but they're also DRIVING PEOPLE AWAY, never to return. Me included.

always a typo

When I move around on the site I use the back button on the page. I dont know why but so far I have not had any popup advertising. Did you go to the teck room and tell them? Have a nice buying/selling day

I've never had a popup either nor have I been restricted with the back button. Are you sure you have the right site?

If you use the back button to get around the site, you are fine.... if you go and look at the site and then want to use the back button to go back to the site you were viewing before, you are stuck on auctionsaloon. I won't be back because I hate that.

When you visit websites, your browser retrieves index.html by default. This is true for eBay, Yahoo!Auctions and all of the "other online auctions" with the exception (?) of AuctionSaloon.

They are essentially using a redirect, whereby users typing in www.auctionsaloon.com are greeted not with the usual index.html but with a cgi script instead.

< script >document.location.href='http://www.auctionsaloon.com/cgi-bin/auction1/auction.cgi'< /script >

This script apparently alters the browser's back button history, disabling earlier sites you have visited. In Internet Explorer (I haven't checked Netscape Navigator), the drop down history is still there and can be used to back out of the site.

I'll not be visiting AuctionSaloon anytime soon.

It sure enough does lock you in--that's just peachy! NOT!! I wonder if the site owner realizes it's doing this. I believe I saw a person from another site saying their web hosting service actually was doing that to the site and once they got hold of their hosting service they fixed it.

I really can't understand why anyone would do such a thing unless they just don't want people to come back. Anyway in case anyone wants to look, until they get it fixed, you can use that little arrow to the right of the back button. Click on it then click on the page before Auction Saloon.

Howdy One and all

I am the one that owns Auction Saloon as many of you know.

I am greatful for the feedback that I have seen here today.

I saw two points raised and I would like to respond to them.

1) Pop ups!

We do not and will not use pop ups! However I too saw the pop ups you are talking about so I decided to investigate and found out that the pop ups were showing up from auctions on my site that used Bidbay for image hosting. So I quickly ended those auctions and thus went the popups as well. Anytime i see an auction on my site has popups in the auction I will end it ASAP.

If you see any more pop ups please send me the auction number it happened on.

2) The front page

I agree the redirect does pose a problem and I am working on doing some rewrites that will fix the front page so that you can back out.

Once again I do appreciate your feedback and will use it to better the web site.

Because of customer feedback we continue to grow everyday!

Thanks
Andretti

"The listings have been picking up and the membership has also went up it has more members then listings so to me that is a red flag."

Hello Tewil,

It is not necessarily a red flag condition that AS has more members than listings. This is for 2 reasons:

1) Many of our members rely on auctions for income. So, in many cases they only list at AS when they have the spare time since AS currently does not have the customer base that the larger sites do.

2) AS also has a lot of members such as myself that do not sell on a regular basis or at all. I only list when I want to sell something...not because I have to.

As the person responsible for our affiliate companies, I can tell you that we only accept 468 X 60 banners from them. NO pop-ups, and no advertising pages or half pages. As Andretti stated, pop-ups are from BB image hosting and those are deleted as soon as they are detected or reported.

Our site's motto is "For the members, by the members". We do take each and every suggestion into consideration and we don't play games with numbers. We're growing each and every day Everyone's opinion is appreciated!

The only rewrite you need is straightforward HTML in an index.html file.

Dimview,

Thanks for the info. We have decided to forgo the rewrite and install an entirely new operating system that is more user friendly. We'll have it up in the next 72 hours. I'd like to thank everyone for their honest input.

Hi again Dimview,

Well, the site is up and running! We're still in the process of transferring our member info, but all of the site areas are accessible. So far, our member feedback has been positive as well Again, we would appreciate your input.
