Just curious. Seems like a nice site but you never see it promoted anywhere.

Takes Money to advertize This sight as far as I can tell free to list they do charge for features and I think they charge FVF when you sell your item.

Problem is that seller need to get bids and close on won auctions before they make any money from sellers listing on there site.

Another problem these new sites have is the fact that people who buy at auctions have a phobia of some type that keep most of them from bidding any where but Ebay , yahoo or amazon.

it seems the larger population believe these three are the only safe site on the web.

Dear dman3,

We'd like to address the status of our listing fees:

All listings will continue to be free for our members through September 31st (this includes waiving all listing, enhancement and closing fees). We wiped clean all of our members accounts at the end of the month. We plan to have one more of these account "wipe outs" on September 31st.

Members who join or are currently participating in our Bulk Loader test drive, however, will continue to have their listings, enhancement and closing fees waived through October 31st.

Carnaby--with all due respect that's an enormously short-sighted comment. Oct. 31 is less than 7 weeks away, what happens then?

And to further a previous comment in the thread, do you at present plan to promote the site through advertising, and if so, what form will this take and when do you plan for it to take place?

I think we did get an answer to that question, too.

Carnaby: I must confess to being a bit taken aback by your lack of response to the initial post of the originator of this thread. From what I've seen elsewhere, you are not running true to form on this one! Your silence on the advertising issue is somewhat alarming!

I think they answered very well Advertizeing costs money as I pointed out.

Carnaby came in and stated that all listing and selling will remain free till OCT 31.

This Tells me they are offering totally free listing and selling till that time they have $0 income from any transaction utill the charges start.

Who knows how they will start them maybe at first just features and FVF, free listing but either way this tells me not to look for advertizeing till at the least holloween time in the fall just before the holiday rush.

its easyer to get merchants (sellers) then Buyers it also sorta cost less then getting sellers in if you dont count the service fees they choose not to charge for there opening.

They didn't come out and say you will hear or see advertizeing some time in sept or october but the context of the post here and there statement seems to spell it out reading between the line.

Register and list at carnabys bring a few of your current customers with you and let the game begin see how it goes.

FOr next time you think about registering there it won't be free to you

I believe that Carnaby like ePier is waiting to hit the magical 100,000 item plateau. Of course ePier has hit that mark and started an ad campaign. Carnaby has a LONG ways to go yet.

Carnaby...you seem to have a very nice looking site...however there is NO WAY I would pay for anything to list with you. You have less bids than ePier, and although ePier are struggling, they do have a lot more "happening than you"....

I was thinking seriously about listing on Canrnaby but won't do so until I see some form of advertising somewhere, anywhere, anything. It would have been nice if they would have at least acknowledged the question in the title of this post, but seeing as how they didn't then I'm certainly not rushing off to support them, either.

With their listing tool still in "test drive", only about 5000 auctions posted and little in fees being collected due to fee waiver promotions it might be premature to spend much or any money on advertising.

But none of that excuses not answering the question.

One of Carnaby's strengths, IMO, has been their straight forward dealing with users.

Sellers are business people and understand cash flow and attempting to make the best use of limited promotional dollars. They also respect open and honest communications.

Because of numerous bad experiences with other venues, sellers are also wary of inflated promises, evasion and BS in general.

I hope Carnaby will continue in it's established pattern of being direct and honest with the user community. While we might not like every answer the long term mutual respect will prove much more valuable to a lasting and productive relationship.

Sellers were very instrumental in building eBay and are more than willing to support and help build new venues but their trust has been abused by other sites and it is a fragile quality at best.

I would encourage Carnaby to continue considering trust above appearances when dealing with sellers and I'm confident it will provide long term rewards that will benefit everyone.

I think they will probably wait until their test drive is over so that they can make sure most of the bugs are worked out before attempting to attract a large number of buyers and sellers.

Carnaby has stated several times that there are not enough auctions running to justify an ad campaign.

I find it odd that Carnaby doesn't advertise too. Restonray made some good points. But some things just dont add up at least not for me the way I am looking at things. As an example carnaby has a lot of contests going on there right now. Their giving out prizes every month plus they have a $5000 sweepstake contest at the end of October for referring people to their site. Now the way I look at it is there are not many people there so the odds of winning that contest are pretty good right now. It seems to me also that they only have a handful of sellers doing most of the activity so when the free listings are over they're going to have hardly anyone there plus be out a lot of money for a contest that was supposed to bring sellers to the site, but didn't. As raylerone points out the end of october is only 7 weeks away. Sure it costs money to advertise but it also cost money to give it away for contest and prizes that aren't doing anything to get sellers on the site. To my way of thinking it just don't add up why they don't do a little bit of advertising to get some sellers over there. Something sure doesn't seem right to me and then when they ignore the question here on a board that lots of people read, well take it however you will.

I am quite sure that Carnaby has a business plan and model that they intend to stick to. When the pre-requisites for a major ad campaign are met, I am sure that it will come. I am not concerned with their current lack of advertising and I fully expect the site to do well. I have had consistent bids there even with the limited number of buyers.

Besides, maybe they are running a campaign somewhere. I've seen a few newbie buyers trickling in recently.

reston_ray ~ Good points! I, too, hope that Carnaby will remain "up front" with their sellers. I just started listing on their site, and so far I really like what I see. Much easier to use than other small sites. But that's just my humble (and ever so unbiased!) opinion.

I hope that Carnaby builds up their auction base over the next couple of weeks and then begins a gradual advertising campaign. Remember what happened to Gold's Auction in August of 1999? Roughly 10,000 listings descended on them overnight, as sellers were disgusted with eBay's addition of fees at that time for Reserve Auctions. Gold's was unprepared for the unexpected onslaught. I suspect that Carnaby is well aware of this lesson and will step up advertisements when "time time is right".

In the meantime, I must agree that there are WAY too many "new" auction sites-- some good and some not-so-good. Only a very few will survive, and we all have our favorites, don't we? I'm rooting for Carnaby-- but success is guaranteed for no one, including eBay.

slimview,

Welcome to AuctionWatch.com. Interesting name you have chosen.

I would like to ask that you familiarize yourself with the Community Guidelines so that you do not breach a term without full knowledge.

This forum becomes quite combative as you might know from lurking and we really try and discourage that type of posting which is why I have deleted your post.

Quoting old posts and dragging older threads to the top is disruptive.

I will lock this thread and if you wish to open another thread without being disruptive, please feel free to do so.
