Ok I had an item up at lycos. It got a bid and since it had it still had like 11 days left I closed it early as a convenience to the bidder.

I sent my EOA email.

The guy writes back. He had bid on it at bidz.com.......a site I have never been to. *shrugs* no biggy since it is fairmarket.

The dilema I have is that this guy was given a gift certificate to use for an item he bids on at bidz.com He wants to use it to pay with.

Also bidz.com has a final value fee for closed auctions I doubt I am responsible for it since I did not list there.

So how would I deal with that?

Have you contacted bidz.com about how to complete the transaction with their gift certificate when the listing was posted through Lycos Auctions?

This sure could turn out to be a problem for alot of sellers, so be sure to et us know how this one turns out.

Lovepotions:

Yes please let us know the outcome. I suspect that the coupon is only valid for auctions which originate on bidz.com although I am not sure how a bidder would know which auctions do and which ones don't.

Another possiblity is something similar to the promotion that Amazon once had when it first set up its auction site. I only vaguely recall the promotion. I think Amazon gave any newcomer who won an auction a $5 credit which could be used to purchase books from Amazon?

I emailed the guy and asked him what gift certificate and where he got it.

I went to the bidz.com site and didn't see any mention of one.

I am waiting for a response.

I am assuming it might be something along the lines of what auxpal and pootah etc etc are doing which is a credit for a featured listing......*shrugs* I don't know but I'll find out soon enough.

lovepotions - Did you ever find anything out about that gift certificate? If you did, please let us know...I just got the same response to an EOA.

Nevermind...just found the answer.

For future reference, as this appears to be a big problem for fairmarket sellers, here is the lowdown on Bidz.com gift certificates:

"The most common mistake people make is bidding on items that are not BidZ items. If it has the BidZ Auction Guarantee seal (see on right), then it's a BidZ item. There will be an image (see below) after the picture of the item that says you can use a certificate on the item."

Hearing this discussion, it has put the nail in fair market's coffin, as far as I am concerned. I have experienced too many negatives to try it past the one auction I listed and closed without any winners. When I first listed on Lycos, as I did 5 others, I emailed each site with a few upgrade suggestions. All but fair market emailed me right away with the comments or statements that they had completed making changes. I never heard from Fair Market until 2 weeks later, I got a call from some guy trying to sell me on a "portal" idea from Free Market. He was given my name and was told to call and wasnt told why. The only time I had ever contacted them was that one email making suggestions to their auction site. When he found out what it was about, he really didnt want to talk to me. Like others before me, I feel they have a fantastic idea that they could build on but there are too many problems with no resolutions for me to try any further.

I still havent heard back from that bidder......

I emailed him back and asked how much the certificate was. If it was like $5 i'd just tell him To print and send it to me and give the guy a break.
