Has anybody ever considered creating a seller owned auction site? I mean, organizing a bunch of sellers to get together and build and promote a site? If there are a number of people promoting and listing they could draw alot of attention and maybe grow quickly. Also, since it was seller owned, it wouldn't be like ebay, not caring about the sellers.

I think most of the new auction sites are owned by auction sellers already. I think a lot of the really small sites are full of only a few sellers stugg, the owners of the site. That way they have a store in an auction format.

Yes, I figured that, but I meant alot of sellers getting together and working hard to promote it and get it going, and letting other people sell on it as well.
tomwii- I'm sure Kenosha has changed alot since the last time you were here. They even opened up thier own museum recently.

A couple of years ago there was a big revolt against eBay and a bunch of sellers were to start or actually did start a large co-op auction. If the darn search AW message boards function still worked you could look up the numerous threads on the co-op.
Many niche auction site sellers have started a mall or web ring that combined their advertising efforts.
There are always some efforts to try to bring a seller mentality into a web site and not a Meg Whitman greed machine.

Oh, god. Not another thread about co-ops.
Click on the following link. I think this one has been in the works for over a year now.

kenosha,
There were a few attempts at a member owned auction site. None of them are in existance today.
I think there are too many egos involved to make something like that a reality.

The biggest problem is getting people to find the site. Feebay has bids on just about every keyword out there. How does one beat that?

Have you considered alternative online sales venues that are not in an auction format?
There are sites that specialize in helping people sell specific types of merchandise. These sites already have traffic and have been around for quite some time.
ABE.com for books
Alibris.com for books
TIAS.com for antiques and collectibles
Rubylane.com for antiques and collectibles
Does anyone else know of successful specialty sites that help small to midsize businesses sell online? The criteria for being a part of the list might be something like:
1. Specialize in a specific type of merchandise. Not a genaral ecommerce site.
2. Enable small to midsize businesses to sell through their site.
3. Have good traffic and plenty of merchandise.
4. Been in business for over a year.

Erthlng:
The Player Auction site has always intrigued me because some categories seem to get a lot of bids. For example, this is a listing of completed auctions for one of the categories.
I don't know anything else about the site as it is not suitable for my type of merchandise.

Hi Out of the Blue,
Yes, auctionpie has been in the oven for almost a year now but we are going to be accepting beta testers and the actual Beta site should be up by the first week of June.
Feel free to ask any questions.
